Review Charley's Old Fashioned Hamburgers - Fort Worth

Javier Solis
Meeting a friend for lunch today and was able to try this restaurant for the first time. We’re glad we stopped by, no need for my review as seeing that this location has so many. Onion rings the size of my palm and The blue cheese burger was delicious. It’s very hard to find a location with a good blue cheese burger. Definitely will be coming back.

It's such a cute little place!. There are two indoor dining areas and outdoor patio seating. So , plenty of room even though it looks small. The burgers are good. Nice and juicy. I judge all my burgers on four points with a 1-5 scale. *Buns -4 They were soft. Not too sweet. Not bland. *Meat-2 nice and tender. Very juicy! Not seasoned or even salted, at all. Made it kind of bland. I added salt at the table. Made it better but still not great. *Veggies-3 I love my burgers loaded with veggies. There was a good amount but I would've like a little more. But they were nice and fresh!! * Overall flavor/texture experience -3 It's a good burger. Definitely better than fast food. But I probably won't go back. They are a little pricey. And for the price, I want my meat to have flavor ! Go try it for yourself though. The people are great. The fries are super. And the onion rings are some of the biggest, fattest, juiciest and crunchiest I have ever had!!! ( Had to add a little salt, tho')😉 Still fantastic!

This has been on the list of “need to try” places and I was pretty impressed. We never went inside to the seating area so not sure if you get table service. We ordered outside, plain cheeseburger and fries as well as the blue cheese burger with onion rings. Burger was delicious, lots of blue cheese chunks too. Onion rings looked incredible but were kind of cold and just okay. Loved the outdoor seating, especially on a beautiful day. Fries were very good, and they have Big Red fountain drink. I felt it was a little pricy for the size of the burger but I don’t mind paying for good food. Will def have to come back and try another burger.
Raquel Rocha
Nice little spot with lots of seating inside and outside, friendly staff, clean place, and delicious food.

Great home in the wall burger place! The atmosphere is home town cooking with a great aroma of food. Large location with plenty of outdoor seating. Friendly staff and great food. Definitely recommend for the family. Will return. Very neat and clean.

Burger was really good! Fresh vegetables and the french fries were golden brown… definitely will eat there again

The 4 of us ordered a different burger and we all loved our burgers. The onion rings were huge and we got a large serving of fries which came with the burgers. Staff was very friendly. Cute little place with indoor and outdoor seating. Highly recommend.

Cute and delicious. There’s really nothing else that needs to be said. The cheeseburger was great! I would opt for a jr next time, though. Fries were extremely fresh and tasted great. I would, however, not recommend a shake, tasted like a mix between frosty and ice cream. Not great.

Great burgers on a little (mainly takeout) building. No frills, just good old fashioned handmade patties, handcut fries and giant onion rings.

Charlie’s is the place to be if you crave a fantastic burger experience. Their burgers are top-notch, guaranteed to satisfy your taste buds. Plus, they offer generous portions of delicious fries that perfectly complement the meal. While the limited outdoor seating may be a downside, they make up for it by providing a playground for the kids, making it a family-friendly spot. It’s worth noting that the location may not be visually appealing, but if you’re solely focused on the food and a fun environment, Charlie’s is definitely worth a visit.

Food and service was awesome! They have seating inside and out.

My husband and I have gone here several times. Every time it's been amazing.. I get the same thing every single time. The burgers melt in your mouth.. the fries are really good. I've tried the onion rings as well but I always go fries. I regret not going sooner
Kenny Melton
It is a cool spot. Onion rings are hand made and big, but they need a little more flavor. Sweet tea is just right. One of their order girls, with the bull ring, has an attitude though, watch out for her.

First time here, passed by it all my life. Just so happen to come at the perfect time on a Sunday, no crowd. Just got the #2 same as my wife. Food was delicious. Burgers big and juicy. We will definitely be back

Omg if I could I would put 10 stars! Absolutely delicious! Best burger ever!! Look at my pic!!! My goodness!

These burgers are not too pricey. Theu do cost more than Mc dishes but it worth it. I had the project x burger. It was hot. It has Tabasco jalapeños and cheddar cheese. My dad had the avacado burger. But very good. The fries were my favorite part. They do not understand cook the fries. The let the starch caramelize before they take them out of the fryer. The onion rings are huge and hand battered. #worthit

Super cool place. burgers are crazy good. Very old school but great. Flavor. Fries need some seasons. Onion rings were crispy outer not so done inside.. the workers very pleasant friendly. And kind. And The wife's famous sweet tea.. BUSSING.. I NEED A GALLON.. WILL BE GOING BACK..

I have driven by Charley’s a few times and finally got to stop today and had lunch. When the food arrived to my table I didn’t think much and honestly it looked a little plain, but once I started eating WOW. It was amazing, I’m a burger freak and this was probably the best burger I have ever had. The meat had great taste and flavor and the fries were great and they gave you plenty. Can’t wait to come back!
Drew J Gnirpsyerd
Me and my buddy went for our first time yesterday. Both of us pass this place all the time and finally we got to try it. Project X burger is amazing my buddy had the avacado burger and said the same. Fries were amazing too as we both admitted to that also. Over all great stuff I ordered no tomatoes and got tomatoes and my buddy didn't notice he had no tomatoes but that is the only thing that was messed up and it wasn't really a big deal. Only other thing I could say is I brought my appetite and could have went for round 2. I could have went for 2 patties versus the 1 that is given. I don't know if that's even an option but if not it should be for sure! Great stuff!

Ate lunch today at Charley's hamburger and just had to get a chocolate malt to top off a great meal. Their French Fries are to die for and boy do they do the business. Somethings, that is the Best Things in Life never change....thank goodness

Charlie's is great I highly recommend it! I've lived here for 33 years and it's the best.

Always have a Great Meal when I / we go there. #5 Bacon Avocado CheezeBurger Basket is always my Favorite. Wash it Down with a DrPepper, It's always worth the trip. Definitely a Hole in the wall Burger Joint, sometimes the staff get behind but thats "cause they are worth going PAST IN & OUT for the best ;)
Christopher Monotekniq
Used to be a standout burger joint and a required stop when we came through town. Not so much these days. Burgers are ok, but the biggest turnoff is staff handling cooked/prepared food barehanded...
Joel Russell
ALWAYS a great burger served up! Love the dbl cheese burger with jalapeño.. mmmmm-good!! Fresh fries are cooked just right, and it’s just a cool place to go. Tables inside or out!
Stephen Fierro
Horrible junk food , terrible meat, owner is rude, never go again
Tiffany Anderson
Absolutely yummy! Great atmosphere, great staff, fast service. We'll be back!

Haven’t been here in ages!!! But it’s still a good burger for the price!

I was really disappointed with my visit tonight. I called in an order for pick up (bacon cheese burger, tater tots) at 7:15, and was told 15-20 minutes. I arrived at 7:35. I paid, and was told it wasn't read yet. I waited patiently for 45 minutes, then asked how much longer it would be for my order. They forgot about me, and left my order sitting on the counter. When I got home, the tater tots were soggy, the burger was missing bacon, and everything was cold. Oh! And of course there's no manager working right now, so no one could do anything to fix it. I really hope this isn't normal.

My friend invited me to Charley's for lunch. I've been in Fort Worth for nine years and did not know this place existed. I live off Granbury Road, the south-most end.

I had a bacon cheeseburger with two tasted "bottom" buns. It. Was. Amazing!!! We shared french fries. I don't see how any one person can eat an order by themselves. I saw early on that a customer thought "$24 was ridiculous." But with three people eating that's only $8 per person. Oh well, let me get back to my praises for Charley's Old Fashioned Hamburgers.

The tea...cannot be compared to Chicken Express. They have the best Texas Sweet Tea. Can's wait for my burger craving so I can go back to Charley's. Great job Charley's!!!!

tabasco burger is the bomb!! this app is making me type 140 characters which is dumb but this place is legit af. They know a thing or two about making burgers.

Charlie's is an institution in Ft Worth. I've been eating here since I was in kindergarten, that's over 25 years ago. I can't say enough good things not only about their food but the owners are such great people! Oh and they make the best damn lemonade!

02/27/17
Called and placed a to go order is probably where I went wrong. I ordered a Project X burger no onion, kiddy burger add cheese, bacon and mustard, fried chicken sandwich add cheese and mayo and a large strawberry lemonade. The woman on the phone read my order back to me and it was correct so I'm curious how this went so wrong. Glad my husband's came out correct. Kiddy burger didn't have bacon or mustard, fried chicken sandwich no mustard and the lemonade was a small, last but not least no salt on the fries? I'm guessing they didn't have their regular guys in the kitchen today. Husband said it was two women. As a woman who is a chef I believe most women aren't cut out to work in kitchens. Most women have no business working I. a professional kitchen. Too bad we ordered today then. We will be checking our food next time until we feel like we can trust them again. This is very unfortunate since my husband and I both really like Charlie's and with what happened yesterday at Max's Wine Dive. I will change my rating when my food is correct.

For two burgers no sides or drinks and a grilled cheese and French fries for my daughter was $24.00. Ridiculously priced and not family friendly.

Project X. Just had lunch there for the first time, the project X basket with fries which was great! A little messy but isn't that the hallmark of almost every good burger? The fries were plentiful and tasty but now that I've seen a picture of the onion rings I'll have to order them next time.
Sharbrad
I can't believe no one has mentioned the homemade onion rings in the reviews. The hamburgers are fabulous, but the onion rings are out of this world. The order is huge, so one order is plenty for two big appetites. The strawberry shakes are wonderful too. They put real strawberries in them.

I've Fallen (For This Burger) And I Can't Get Up. Send help! I just had the most wonderful burger called the Project X. It is a half pound burger infused with Tabasco sauce and grilled, along with onions and jalapenos. It is then topped with lettuce and tomatoes and melted cheese.. The burger is not over-the-top hot, but it IS flavorful and is definitely and originally different. You better love Tabasco sauce though, because THAT flavor is pronounced. As some of the others have said, the burger is greasy, more than most that I have had at other local burger joints. They probably use an 80%/20% mixture of beef and fat which makes for a real juicy hamburger. I usually like a leaner grade of beef, but this burger was not messy like Five Guys can be and I commend them on their preparation. I had their combo which comes with fries and a free drink. I had their iced tea and it was amazingly good. I say amazingly because they have those tea canisters which usually deliver not-so-good tea, especially if they are not cleaned thoroughly. I'm a stickler for good, fresh tea and this was it! The fries were good... less greasy than the burger actually. Besides a large selection of burgers they have a lot more sandwiches. They had a special today of a chicken-fried steak sandwich with fries.

The place is really small. Five tables and sixteen chairs...exactly. The dining room (and I use that term loosely) is about twice the size of my kitchen. If you can't find room to sit, there are also some tables outside in the front of the restaurant and some others on the patio. There are a few nostalgic pictures like Elvis and diner knick-knacks decorating the place. The place is big enough to hold a restroom but I didn't ,uh, partake. The workers are very friendly and I had an enjoyable time for the thirty minutes that I was there. I gotta tell you. This is one place I happily fall for the burgers!

Burgers are great! Love the.... Burgers are great!
Love the mushrooms

Horrible customer service! Not returning
Tabitha
My family has been to almost every burger joint in the area and I can say that while this burger is good, it's not the best. The best part of our meal was the onion rings. What Charley's makes up for in their onion rings it lacks in customer service and charm. The service was rude and the restaurant is not accommodating due to its small size.

Everything a good burger joint should be! Love this place

HOLE IN THE WALL QUALITY. The overall rating in my opinion is a 10 out of 10. Big thick burger and real fries (not out of a bag). This is what most people would call your typical hole in the wall mom and pop burger joint. Call it whatever you like but don't call me late to eat.
Yuri Antakurpantisov
If I had a choice between Charley's and that overrated and overpriced Fred's or kincaids it would be charley's hands down and if you disagree I'll go Joseph Stalin up in here!!!!
Greenman
Disapointed! Fries could be the worst in town. They drench the whole buger in grease which is bad because the reason there fries are bad is because of the burned grease. We have many better burger places in town. Kincades, dutches, pops etc.
Foodgasmic
I really liked Charley's, and I've always been meaning to try it. It was such a nice day so we ate outside, but the seating area inside was very quaint. Drink their lemonade it's made fresh and is delicious! Cheeseburgers are a must!

Terrible fries. Decent burgers.

Pricey Grease. We had our two Canadian burger specials to go. First impression when opening the bag at home was how saturated with grease the burger wrapper was. Not a dry spot on it. The positives for this place are that they serve flavorful meat and the tomatoes seemed vine ripened. I also enjoyed the less greasy skin on fries. I think that I'll try other Fort Worth burger icons before voting this one the best. I find Whataburger almost as tasty and less greasy.

Now who was the judges?. Went there since they won 1st place burger in Star Telegram vote. The hamberger was at best average. The meat had no taste and was dry. No way this would even make my top 10. Did not try the fries, onion rings were cut large but not enough to bring me back. Cost for 2 burger and 1 order onion rings nearly $18, will save my money and go to 5 guys or In-and-out burger next time.

Milt palasota. I don't understand some of comments here. My wife and I own BBQ restaurants around the U.S. and have traveled on a circuit that rates hamburgers. No way anyone is going to beat Charlie's...period. especially in DFW. Haven't had food like that since I was a kid growing up in Marlin, TX back in the 60's.

Jimil's Bistro & BBQ.

This is one of the 2 best greasy burgers in Fort Worth. Locally owned, hand cut fries, huge onion rings.

Will have to go back. It has been years but I loved it when I did go. It was a regular when I worked nearby. Sometimes the owner would call and say I am headed to your dress shop, do you want me to bring lunch. Loved it. Will have to give them a try again.

The burgers reminded me of my granny's burger with that lil bit of crunch to it...it was very good. The fries were ok. Wife said the fresh squeeze lemonade was good. I do like the hole in the wall feel..great lil place
Michael
Good food, but a little pricey. I would consider this place a real hole in the wall.. There were 3 or 4 picnic tables outside and maybe half a dozen tables inside. The food was good. I thought it was a little pricey. But, I left full and the food was good. So, I can't complain! :)
Armando Villarreal III
Great hole in the wall place.. They make a great and greasy avocado burger and fries. The sweetened tea is also delicious on a hot summer day. the staff has a great sense of humor.
Tony Stokley
The food & my Dr. Pepper had no taste. This is your typical grease pit hamburger joint. And while normally these types if places have really good food, this place was a BIG disappointment! If I were you, I'd go find a WHATABURGER!!!
J.B.
Project X.. The name says it all.
Susan
Great burgers. My god the avocado burgers are amazing, and their cherry limeades are made hand squeezed not like ordinary sprite n cherry syrup (sonic) the french fries are ok but i just want their burgers!!!!!!!
Big Eats
Don't go out of your way.. I had a cheeseburger for lunch today. Good meat but really not much flavor to it.
Good burger but nothing to go out of your way to get.

Burgers for the Soul. I've been eating at Charlie's for years. Even if you try to eat healthy, it's worth the "cheat" to indulge in a greasy, hearty Charlie's burger every once in a while. My personal favorite is the Bleu Cheese burger--complete with sauteed onions and a grilled/toasted bun. YUM! We have a few good burger joints in Fort Worth, but Charlie's is my all-time favorite. The patty doesn't hit the griddle until you've ordered it. . .and they always get my order correct, which is a big deal to me.
Rudebutt
Could be better. Not my type of burger.
Meg
Better than Kincaids. True, they don't offer ice cream or deviled eggs, but the hamburgers definitely out-do the old Fort Worth staple. Not that I don't love Kincaid's, its still my favorite place to meet friends and I always recommend it to out of towners, but if you are a hamburger critic, you would definitely agree that charley's tops the charts. try the "big-un" or the "x-factor" (only if you are very brave with a stomach of steel)
Not the best for dining in, it is literally a hamburger "shack", but great outside picnic tables for sunny days. Call ahead to order if you dont want to wait because they do grill to order. The fries arent the best but the onion rings are the best in town by far.

This place is what you think of when you say "hole in the wall." Started way back in the day, it has remained in the same spot forever. Originally built as a walk up and order venue, they have added a few seats inside over the years and plenty of picnic tables outside. Its the sort of place you would stumble onto when tooling the small towns in Texas and not the metropolis of Fort Worth. Burgers are 1/3 lb served in a basket. Temperature was good and flavor was good as well. Cooked on a griddle, the seasoning was solid and the juice factor a winner. The buns are simple white bread and not much to get excited about (comparatively thinking that is.) The #2 cheeseburger comes with lettuce, tomato, pickle onion and mustard. Fries are hand-cut with the skins on and good, but they are hit and miss. Mine were good, but AGH's were soggy and not tasty. This has happened to us before. Most likely the timing between the burgers and fries is off. But we will say that the portion of fries helps mak
