Review Jalapenos Mexican Restaurant - Eagle River

Robbie Huck
The food and service was amazing as usual. I cannot wait for the new location in Eagle River to open in 2024.

Who knew the best Mexican Restaurant was hiding in Eagle River, AK? I stop here every time I’m in town for work and I’ve never had a bad experience. Everyone is friendly and helpful, the food is delicious and the colorful decor is truly a work of art!

🤩 Amazing place. Here is one of our fav places in our Alaska trip. Price and quality balance is perfect. They bring nachos right after you arrived. I love these kind of small things in restaurants. We got Fajitas. I highly recommend to taste it. Also comes with rice, beans, salad, sour cream and tortillas. You can ask for less not to waste them because there are 4 of them. The lady was so welcoming and geniune. Lovely place. 😍

You have to try the king crab enchiladas! Amazing! When in Alaska...

I went with my sister and brother and what an amazing dinner. The staff was awesome. We enjoyed our visit immensely!

Excellent customer service. Chips and salsa are delicious and the carne asada street tacos are right in 👍🏽. Love the cleanliness and atmosphere of the restaurant.
Amber Sluss
Food was absolutely amazing and the drinks were great. They have amazing white queso which is so hard to find up here that actually tastes delicious. 10/10 recommend. Will be back!

Service very slow. No water. No sense of urgency. Bar left unattended. Not even busy. Sadly prices up service down. Not on par with the past.

The owner made me a steak burrito for lunch today and it may have been THE BEST burrito that I have had up in Alaska. The rice in it was good and the meat was seasoned very nicely. I have had burritos other places and they were kind of flavorless compared to Jalepenos. If you see him call him Mr. AMAZING I have made it a point to head out there one night soon for dinner to try out some more of there items on the menu. 08/24/2021 lunch is served. Enjoy the photos

Ok just to set the facts I'm kind of a picky eater. I ordered the Amazing Tacos Mini grilled asada tacos with chorizo! $17.50 There are 5 small tacos and I ordered rice on the side. The rice was fantastic probably the best I've had at a Mexican reasturant since I can't remember when. The chorizo was not my favorite at all I didn't like the flavor and was a little greasy for me. I ate them but I should stick with plain beef tacos. The service was great but thought the food took a little longer than it should have. Then again we do have a lot of people not wanting to work so good on the ones that do work there. The rest of the family had no complaints about their meals. I would give 41/2 stars if I could. Don't hesitate to eat here or the one in anchorage. Again the staff was really nice and stayed on top of everything.

We went in for a late lunch/early dinner. The food was excellent as well as the service.

Joined some friends on Saturday night for a birthday party. We had a group of 25. The service was a little slow but it is hard to keep up orders for 25 people at one time. They definitely tried their hardest to make sure all of us were taken care of kept drinks in front of us.

This place has the best Mexican food in the entire state, and the friendliest people. We eat there at least once a week and it's always the best. It's our favorite place to bring visitors from other states. Jalapeno's Rocks!

Carmen is the best!! She makes us feel special every time we're here. We love the Me Gusta. It is a great meal. Our favorite place in town.
Kristian Ritter
Excellent food, and superb service from our waiter Chris Wood. I highly recommend this restaurant and that you sit in Chris's section.

My ice and I had dinner tonight and the food and service was excellent. I had the Carne Asada burrito and wife ordered a combo meal. Everything was great. Thanks to Tony for outstanding service.

Definitely the best Mexican food in Eagle River. It’s the one Mexican place we all enjoy as a family from teenagers to kids.
Thea Schuett Paxton
I absolutely love Jalapenos! The best Mexican food in Eagle River. And the service is top notch!
Corina Rosenbaum Patz
Jalapeños is our favorite Mexican restaurant in Eagle River! The food and drinks are great, and the staff is fabulous, especially Carmen, she is always so friendly and welcoming!
Richard Heller
The Ramos familia is an amazing group of people. I've been coming here for over 7 years and I've never had bad service or food. Keep up the amazing job yall!

I’m from San Antonio and have visited several Mexican Restaurants here in Eagle River and Anchorage. Jalapeños is by far the most authentic and best tasting Mexican food I’ve had. If you haven’t tried it, you’re missing out.

Great place for margaritas and ! Amazing food and staff :)

I'm not sure if they have changed owners, chefs, or just wait staff, but we went the other night because they are usually really good - but not the other night. The service was slow, not our waitresses fault, but the food took forever and was NOT worth the wait. I missed our usual EXTREMELY nice waitress, didn't even see her. The carne asada - which is usually really good, was awful. The refried beans were over salty and had minimal, if any cheese. The salsa was bland. The fries were lacking in any seasonings. Thank God my drink was good. The prices went up too, I think. My son's "kid's meal" did not come with a drink, and his milk cost $3.99!! I could have bought a GALLON of milk for that. My other son's Shirley Temple cost less than the milk! My friend's Cadillac Margarita cost over $12.00!! Extremely disappointed! What the heck happened?
Katie Reeves
The best Mexican food in Alaska. Their queso and fajitas are amazing, service is always fantastic, and they have large portions.
Lance Davis
The best Mexican food in Eagle River! Our family loves Jalapeños. It’s one of our favorite restaurants and the service is awesome too.
Cory Montgomery
Best Mexican restaurant in the Anchorage area! The service is the best too! Love their food.
Cbrady
South anchorage Jalapeños not good and service was very bad

Jalapenos serves mexican dishes as you would get in MEXICO. The owners are direct mexican decent that with their mother brought their recipes and dish preparation with them. Truly authentic mexican dishes. The best mexican food in Alaska. They have decorated the interior beautifully to make you as though you are in
Mexico. They make their salsa and chips. Beer
and wine is available. Excellent for families and parties
Have eaten there since they opened. Used to be good food, reasonable prices and a fun place. Prices went up, quality went down. After last night's meal, I have no desire to return.
Lynjupiter
Our favorite place to go in Eagle River for Mexican. We are always treated as family when we walk in the door. The food is always served hot and taste wonderful. I love the decor and the care they take in decorating shows!
Kortney Pope
I need to stop giving Alaska Mexican food a chance, there are honestly no amazing Mexican resturants here. The Jalepenos atmosphere is good, but that was pretty much the only thing. The food has NO flavor, their beef they use in enchiladas you can definitely tell is just ground need with generic grocery store taco seasoning. Food is way overpriced. Very disappointed, will not be coming back.

Hands down best chilireano I've ever had traveld all over the USA nothing compares that I've found love this place worth the wait great envrrionment
Embar
Decent looking place with somewhat decent food. Food was served cold. We had to ask four times for some more spicy salsa. I suppose they are used to people who enjoy mild salsa. No salsa picante, cold rice and beans = no bueno.
JNR
The decor and friendliness of staff was nice, but the food was a little pricey. It was the same quality of Taco King in Anchorage for about $15 more + the drive to Eagle River (I live in Anchorage). But it wasn't a dissapointment. It was just alright. Kind of bland and nothing was spicy at all. But I've had worse.

Hard to Beat. We were greeted at the door by a super friendly and enthusiastic staff member for a Saturday late lunch and it got better from there. The decor is bright, cheerful, and friendly, although I tend not to like the number of flat screen televisons on every wall of the bar area they were not too intrusive. The server took our orders and we had our food very quickly-a good assorment at our table -from GIANT burrito, HUGE chimichanga, large order of chili relleno(appeared to be hand made) and nicely made tamale and enchilada. Everything was fresh, hot and very tasty-the complementary salsa and chips were good too, but I would like the hot salsa to be a lot hotter-this is just mild. This was our second visit here and it easily makes it to the top of our picks for good Mexican style food. Highly recommended. Worth the drive from Anchorage anytime.

Best of the best!. The best mexican food in the Anchorage area! The service is always great, very friendly. The restaurant is welcoming and warm. The food is top notch. Obviously one of my favorite places!

This was the first Mexican restaurant we at at when we arrived in Alaska. Top notch service. We are at several others but none compared to jalapeños. Great food and we always feel like we are part of the family there. Sadly we just had our last meal there. As Always it amazing we will miss the staff and food. We highly recommend eating here. You will come back!
Marian M
Decent service, warm atmosphere. The chips and salsa are awesome but the rest of the food is mediocre.

There are many Mexican restaurants in Alaska. We were in Eagle River on business and had a coupon so we thought we'd try Jalapenos. The coupon got us there but the food will bring us back. Incredible tamales, moist and tasty. I've had too many super dry tamales which took water to wash down. Delightful flavor to the meat in the taco, spicy but not red chili powder spicy. Very good. The mini chicken chimi had flavorful chicken in it that tasted like pollo rojo. Best salsa I've had in Alaska!! They're a super clean restaurant decorated beautifully. Jalapenos es muy bueno!!!
Hasmile
Yummy Mexican!. The food is very flavorful and fresh tasting, not like most Mexican food that taste like its been sitting under a heat lamp for days. Good portions for the money.
Jim
Great food, Great atmosphere and wonderful staff. Jalapenos isn't just good Mexican food for Eagle River, it's good food all-around. We're locals that eat at Jalapenos a few times a week and we just love this place!

FOOD
-A la carte items from ~$3-$7, combos dishes $9-$14 and higher end dishes $15-$19

The burritos are HUGE and the fajitas arrive sizzling hot. They have great combination meals that come with some really tasty rice and beans of your choosing (refried, black or whole pinto). Not that hungry and want to skip the rice and beans? They offer just about everything A la carte.

Although I usually stick to the regular menu items I've occasionally strayed to one of their daily specials which are always spot on. We just wish they'd add FISH TACOS to the regular menu or at least serve them more often as specials. Imagine being the only place in town that offered AUTHENTIC ALASKAN FISH TACOS made with either halibut or salmon (hint, hint!). Now that would be a true Alaskan taco!

Camarones Calientes is probably my favorite dish on the menu. Huge prawns simmered in spicy sauce (or not so spicy if that's your thing) with peppers and onions. And did I mention they offer it "spicy"? That's something we haven't found at many other Mexican eateries and that's the ability to get things spiced up a bit. Jalapenos definitely isn't afraid to turn up the heat and best of all you can get just about any dish spicier if you ask. Try a fresh roasted jalapeno or two on the side of just about any dish to add some serious heat.

Not in the mood for Mexican? Believe it or not they have great burgers which they'll prepare to your specifications. Bacon, cheddar and 'fresh' sauteed jalapeno peppers is my favorite.

ATMOSPHERE & DRINKS (adult beverages)
-beer ~$5 and margaritas ~$9-$13

We love the atmosphere and prefer to sit in the cantina area at the bar. You will usually find a very social crowd in the cantina area, especially if you sit at the bar. Jerry is the usual night bartender with Claudio filling in occasionally, both make a mean scratch margarita. Try one on the rocks and you'll probably never go back to house margaritas again.

They offer all the usual and not so usual suspects in the way of Mexican beers: Dos Equis draft, Tecate, Pacifico, Corona, Modelo, Negro Modelo and Carte Blanc. They also offer some Alaska micros (Glacier Brewhouse IPA at the time of this review) as well as a seasonal offering and the usual macros (Bud, Miller, Coors, etc...) in draft and/or bottle form.

Also, as you'd expect from a reputable Mexican restaurant, they offer a vast array of Tequila offerings from Hornitos to Don Jose to Cabo, blanco, Reposado and Anejo. Best of all even their house margaritas are made with a quality 100% de agave tequila (I believe it's Hornitos) and of course you can have your margarita made to specification: on the rocks, blended, flash blended, salt, no salt, cadillac, flavored, or scratch.

My favorite is the scratch which is made with 100% fresh squeezed orange, lime and lemon juices which are squeezed at the time you request your drink and I go with Don Jose Anejo teguila. A few bucks more than the house offering but worth it, in my opinion.

STAFF
Overall the staff is just wonderful. Since we typically sit at the bar in Cantina we've gotten to know the staff in that area very well and we're treated like family. Even when we sit at a table or booth we get treated absolutely wonderfully by our server. Everyone's going to have an off night from time-to-time but for the most part every server we've ever had at Jalapenos has done a superb job. If you go to Jalapenos with any amount of regularity you will see the same faces time and time again which tells me they have very little staff turnover which means a happy staff which of course equates to great service.

OVERALL
Jalapenos is a great place to eat. The great food & drinks, great atmosphere and wonderful staff make it a place worth going back to again and again.

Oh and if you have someone in your party celebrating a birthday, be sure to tell your server and get your camera ready!

NEVER again. This is the third time ordering take out and the worst ever! Online ordering was not accurate, food was cold and meat was overcooked/dry. Recommend finding another restaurant.
Glinda
Food was ok nothing spectacular. There was one woman running around doing everything. So the service was less than acceptable. Was disappointed!
YumYum
Best Salsa. This place has the tastiest salsa I have ever tried! The place is so clean and you can tell that they consider every square inch of their restaurant. A lot of restaurants are half *** with their atmosphere. Every employee is soooo nice and thats why I believe they have very happy committed customers!
AKAlex
Okay. I've always had outstanding service at Jalepeno's, the food is just okay. It is hands down the best Mexican in Eagle River but far from being great Mexican food. If you really want good Mexican food try Taco King, Burrito King, or Serrano's in Anchorage. I'll still take it any day over Chepo's or Garcia's though.
NF Chance
Probably one of the worst meals of my life. I heard so many nice things, only to be met by cold, and tasteless food. Seranos in Anchorage is as close as real Mexican you can get up here...
Damsel.Fly
We thought it was great and have traveled back out to ER from Anchorage to eat there again! They don't seem to handle special orders real well, such as a la carte orders or "all rice, no beans" and that sort of thing but once you can get the server to understand what you want, they do really well.

I visited this restaurant on a Sunday. There was one other party eating in the entire place. Our waitress charged my debit card for not only our tab, but also the other party's tab. She promised the charge for the other tab would be taken off of my account within three days. It has been over a week and this place charged my card $80 total, my tab totaled $35. The food was barely warm and the meat looked like cat food. My drink came with nearly no ice. The beans and rice came dry and cold. Please do not waste your time or money eating here.
Sam McMichael
Good resturaunt. Sometimes the food seems a little unfresh, and the service leaves a bit to be desired (not rude, just lack thereof), but overall a pretty good restaurant.
Melva Tignor
Great food wonderful staff and priced decently. Definitely going back.

I went here to try it out based on friends recommendations. The service was poor, refills of chips and salsa cost extra, and the worst part was the food tasted moldy ! I couldn't even finish my food after a moldy bite
Seamanclan
Fresh Ingredients and Allergy Friendly. I was impressed with how fresh their dishes taste. Made to order. They were also fantastic when it came to making sure some of our dishes were allergy friendly, and modified to our tastes. I can't eat anything spicy, and my dish came out with a sauce that jalapenos in the sauce. They immediately returned it and made me a new one. In fact, on my last visit, we had to return 2 dishes, and they didn't complain or treat us poorly for being difficult. I would definitely return.

What's Up Jalapenos?. We've eaten at Jalapenos a couple times a year for the last five years or so. They have always had great food, using fresh ingredients, until last November or so. For some reason the food quality was down that night. Nothing tasted fresh. It didn't even tast Mexican. They must have changed cooks or something. The new bar was nice, but it's not a good place to take kids due to the show content on the large screen TVs. Next time we'll ask to be seated on the other side of the restaurnt. I'll go back once more to see if they've gotten back in their groove. If not, I'll drive the extra half-hour to Mexico-in-Alaska.

Food, Service, Atmosphere - very good. Been coming here over the years....its been just OK in the past, but recent upgrades, including the bar are great. Food has improved and service is prompt and professional. Very pleased. Good job.
Jeri Laveulette
Thanks for great service and awesome food . It was a great experience after waiting at a different restaurant for over 20 mins. And not getting nothing but a sit and a menu. Thanks !!!!!
Cyberhca
This place is not authentic mexican food!! What mexican joint uses toco "shells"for their tocos? I could not believe it. The brands rated like they came from a can and the burritos were dry, things looked pretty though. I believe it's made to cater to yuppies that don't know any different..just saying...
Miki
"Awesome" food!!!!!! The best Mexican food I've ever had...hands down!! The staff is absolutely wonderful, and they treat you like family. The new bar is great too...cool place to hang out on a Friday night. Love it here!!!!!!!
Jess
Don't use online ordering... After an hour we called.... they had charged our credit card but never received our order
Marty
Took a while for our meal to arrive, my burrito took a couple of glasses of water to get it down also a Margarita was $9 which I thought was pretty pricey for a resturaunt in a tiny strip mall. Had a better experience at Garcias
Anthony
Well, the food may have been good but after I found the hair among the rice and beans I could really think about eating much more. Not sure if I'll bs back anytime soon.
AKMama
Chicken enchilada was delish! The meat was flavorful and moist. My tamale was mostly very dry, hard dough, with a few strings of drier meat. The rice was in competition for dryness with the tamale, but the beans were amazing. Chips were light and crispy, but salsa tasted like Old ElPaso brand. Half of it was awesome, half was awful. Too bad I had to pay for the whole thing.
Vike64
Been to this restaurant several times the service is hit or miss, miss most of the time. The is very good and only call on orders for pick up now. This way I can still enjoy the food.
Daniel Solodon
A lot of the negative posts I see here have not been to this restaurant. The reason is most of the servers are men. The one you may have gone to is chepo's it does suk. Jalepenos is a highly suggested and respectable restaurant. Jalapeños has fine Mexican dining and everyone who I have brought here from the lower 48 agree, it's Mexican cuisine in an unexpected part of north America. Some people are overly bothered by restaurant staff but here all you do is raise your hand and 2 people are at your service. If you wish to have come to you table more often tell them to watch your glass when it's near empty and it never fails they are there to ask you if you need something. a refill or whatever you wish, these are the most friendly people you will have the opportunity to dine with, the owner hires only the best. I recommend this owner and crew with highest regards as the best restaurant in Eagle River and surrounding cities hands down the best!
Mike H
Best food and service in Eagle River and Anchorage. We will continue as regulars there.
Chase Park
Not sure what I ate, but it was nasty.
Jersey84
The burritos were dry and the service sucked!
Emma
Bad Review. The food at this restaurant was not flavorful or spicy. The service was horrible, our waitress did not come back to the table to check on us until we were halfway finished with our meal. When she brought our food to the table, she didn't even know what the meals were called, I heard something to the effect of "here is that one dish". If this is the highest rated Mexican food in Eagle River, I don't think I want to try any of the other Mexican Restaurants in Eagle River.
Rach And CTM
Good food. We visit here often and it's been good every time. Sometimes the service is a little slow but the food is always good.
Mctuffington
Food tastes watered down.
Mel
Same menu you see at most Mexican places but their blackberry margerita is heaven in a glass. My only regret is that I only had one.
Mike
Best seafood dishes I've ever had at a Mexican restaurant. The only thing I can complain about is I never have room for dessert!
Chavo
Unexpected. I wasnt sure what to expect when i went to Jalapenos for the first time. I'm not a big fan of Fexican food. I'm more of a Sea Food LOVER. But the sea food dishes at Jalapenos made me love it even more. I had no idea how different and how rich the food would be.
I know where im going the next time i come home from fishing empty handed.
Lupe
Delicious. I ate here about three days ago with my family and we all loved it. The service was wonderful, always smiling and tending to our every need. I was surprised at how fast our food came out. My enchiladas were just out of this world. I especially liked rice. It was so tender and full of flavor. I would definitely go again.
Richard
GOOD TIMES! GOOD TIMES!. As a local business owner i realise some things the average person does not. The "jalapenos" experience has been more than what i expected, and then some.
the staff is on it! the vibe you get as soon as you walk in is lively! the server told me that the place is so bright she doesnt have to go tanning... hahaha. i have been back a few times to see if it was too good to be true. but they seem to have things together really well. i say that because the food has a taste unlike anyother i have seen here in alaska. the presentation is very well put together. all in all i really liked jalapenos. they have my business.
DrO
Three strikes in one sitting!. Have enjoyed Jalapenos in the past-- food, for Alaska especially-- wasn't half bad. The staff was ABSOLUTELY horrendous! Ordered take out to go & got told that my order, as I stood there w/ receipt in hand for their store, had been sent to another location. I asked if I should pick it up there and they insisted-- "no problem, can fix it here give us a couple minutes". 45 minutes later I escape-- $40 poorer to get home and realize half my order is missing. Called back and the "manager" as he claims to be states, "should have checked it before you left. I literally went through a check list as I stood there of everything I ordered. The waitress wouldn't put down the bag for me to go through she just kept insisting, "it's already in there". RIDICULOUS. I will never go back to this place and for anyone even half way considering it-- if Taco Bell had Mexican painted chairs, there'd be no difference.
Broccoli
Not Bad.... Not bad for Alaskan Mexican food.
Chris
Was charged 3 or 4 dollars for a small scoop of guacamole. Waitress did not feel relevant to let me know this tidbit in advance. Food was just ok.
