Review Steve's Soul Food, Downtown - Detroit

Jennifer Redmond
The food was absolutely horrible. I ordered a fish dinner with 2 sides. Outside of the fact that I paid $18 for it, the fish was cold and tasted like it was previously frozen. The mac and cheese was disastrous, with brown tipped macaroni, like it was re-heated. The only thing that was good was the cabbage. I wont be back!

As stated in another review, I was told about this restaurant by the rental car shuttle bus driver at DTW. She was not wrong. My wife and stopped by here on a cool, cloudy evening after visiting the Ford Museum. We were both very hungry. After having our GPS take us to this location we parked on the street and went inside. Our first impression involved the building itself, which was very beautiful and was built in the Art Deco manner. We found out later that the building itself was over 100 years old. Very impressive. At this restaurant, the food is served up cafeteria style. You walk the line and a helpful employee tells you what is available on the line and describes dishes if you are not familiar with them. After listening to the menu choices I had BBQ chicken, collard greens and pinto beans. My wife had the rib tips, cabbage and corn. To be honest, I have never had that much food in a restaurant. And, to say that this was soul food would be a gross understatement. This was the absolute best soul food I've ever had. And, as I told Steve the owner, who happened to be there, those collard greens were second only to those of my Mother (rest her soul). That is the highest compliment I can give to any cook. The food was that good. The chicken was falling off the bone and was an entire half chicken. The beans were done just right and were also delicious. My wife ate just about everything on here plate too. We were both happy, to say the least. And despite all this food, we also had desert. I had the sweet potato pie and my wife had peach cobbler. Needless to say, we had to take the deserts back to our hotel for enjoyment at a later time. We were too stuffed to eat them. If you ever happen to be in Detroit you are doing yourself a disservice if you do not eat here. The building is beautiful, the decor attractive, the staff is awesome and the food is the best soul food I have ever had. I would dine here again in a New York minute. Thanks to Steve and his entire staff. Your restaurant made our visit to Detroit extra special.

Food was great! Just in Detroit for the day and wanted to eat good food. My friend took me and my children to Steve's on a Sunday and we of course expected a line and a long wait. The wait existed but wasn't terrible. The truth is we could have waited twice as long and it still have been worth it. The food was great! The wings were a crunchy hit that could have used a little more seasoning during the cooking process but still were solid standard. The sides were all delicious. The absolute best part had to have been the fried fish though. It was the unilateral champion of dinner that night. The only thing truly lacking was the coconut cake, which was sad because all of the preceding eats were just delectable. The coconut cake was just sweet and lacking the depth of flavor that a true southern coconut cake would have been expected to come with. Maybe better/fresher coconut could have been the savior of this dessert. But alas they still garnered 5 stars with a strong side lineup and stellar mains all led by the perfected fried catfish.

Just moved out here from the south and was walking around Detroit, found this along the river walkway. Hands down one of the best places I've eaten at up here. The food was on point, seasoned the way I would if I were cooking for family. Decent selection of your typical soul food. Atmosphere was pretty chill. Building is under construction but overall it was a really pleasant experience and I'll definitely be returning. When parents come to visit I'll be taking them there as well!!!

Salty gravy, chicken done but just barley tasty dressing! Sugar in the greens. Mac n cheese was on point! Sweet potatoes pie was good but the texture was off. Staff were nice and pleasant! Clean establishment with nice outdoor dining

The food was nasty 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮they only had three meats which looked dried out the had meat loaf that looked like dog food they served me bagged 10 min rice. The Mac and cheee had no cheese but full of butter. The yams were like mashed potatoes i can't make this up. They never asked if I wanted it to go or dine in. There was no sides fr. I think I got more satisfaction from the precooked cornbread muffins that would barely satisfy my 5 year old but hey everyone can't cook from the soul.

If I didn't like soul food so much it would probably be two stars. The food 100% gets a 5/5. Everything else, however, suffers greatly. Location is not the best. Inside was under construction. Super hot. Took forever. Corn specifically was chewy. Chicken 12/10. Highly recommend if you want to eat in your car.
