Review Axum - Denver

It’s my first time to try the Ethiopian dish. I love it. We ordered the Chef Recommended Meats and Veggies, the Specialty Tips and two appetizers. Both are delicious.

Came here using a Groupon. Food is wonderful; appetizers to dessert. Injera is deliciously fermented and comes plentiful with each dish. Classy decor. Ambience set for romance, a family experience, or a company lunch. Friendly and present. Priced modestly. I'd recommend the lamb. We would return and pay full price.

This is really delicious Ethiopian cuisine. Eating with our hands was fun, everything we have tried has been really tasty- especially their house honey- Ethiopian wine 🍷❤️

This place was great. It was completely empty when I visited at around 2:15 on a Tuesday afternoon. The owner happened to be serving and the service was very good. Ive only eaten Ethiopian one other time nearly a decade ago so it was kind of like my first time again. I got a 6 item vegetarian combination and ot was all very good and filling. My food was brought to me quickly, the owner are attentive and the atmosphere was cool. Contemporary Ethiopian music was playing in the background and i was nodding my head while smashing my grub. There happened to be (at least) 3 other Ethiopian spots within a mike or to on Colfax but im glad I chose this one because the food what very good for the price. Way more expensive than other places I researched. I definitely recommend you try this place out.

Oh my gosh! I love this place so much. The nice lady who waited on us was wonderful. The combo plate was sooooo good and the bread was spot on. I had this a couple weeks ago and I am sitting here drooling thinking about it. I can't wait to go back. Really fantastic all the way around. I highly recommend to anyone. And if you haven't tried this food yet you need to make it a point to do so. It's insanely good.

Can't speak for authenticity but the food was delicious. My husband and I shared a meat combo and a vegetarian combo. We ordered 31-34 for the meats. My favorite was definitely the traditional drumstick one. The chicken breast one was dry. From the veggies, I liked 41, 42, and 44. I've had better tasting Ethiopian collard greens so I found 43 ok. Service was a bit slow but there was only one waitress working and possibly cooking since she'd disappear for a while but she was nice.

We were there all by ourselves on Sunday around 6pm so the service was great, prompt. The waitress was very sweet, she simply explained to us the menu. The food was delicious and filling and the honey wine was tasty. We used a Groupon. Thanks again for that experience we will be returning.

I came for a quick lunch. I got a delicious meat combo meal. Great service and fantastic food. I got my food within 10 minutes of sitting down. All the food is eaten by hand with the injera bread, but I was careful and it wasn’t messy at all.

First time eating Ethiopian cuisine and it wasn't too bad. I was disappointed that my"hot" dish was anything but, however since I got a great deal on Groupon is still a win!

The food was fantastic as always. I love getting the meat & veggie sampler and trying different dishes, and it's always a pleasure when we get to introduce new people to Ethiopian cuisine. Eating family style is a treat.

Great selections, including Ethiopian Beer-and if you're lucky-honeywine. Easy location to meet people, with ample parking. Food made with various spice levels, so an excellent spot to try new dishes. As always, Ethiopian cuisine naturally offers vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options. (Alternative sides to Injera are also offered here)

Service was great as I walk in this waiters name Sarah came with a beautiful smile and was a friendly attitude took us to our seat and offered as a drink. Anyway I was more afraid of what kind of food they have because I'm a vegan and she's smiling show me all the choice with you I can have. I ordered sherro and some salad along with it was great and very tasteful I recommend everyone to go try their sherro. I will be coming soon to Axum.

There was ample parking when we ate here (Friday night, around 7pm) and the service was good. The food was delicious overall, and we left extremely full. Here's what we had: Axum Special Tibs: the meat was overcooked and tough, but the flavor was still okay. It came out on a sizzling platter which was emptied onto our injera. Atakilit wot: I personally love cabbage and potatoes, so I loved this dish. I've had it before at another Ethiopian restaurant, and it tasted about the same. Dero Alicha: the chicken was tender and the flavor was great. This came out hot in a stone pot (which we recognized since Koreans use it for stews too) and was poured onto our injera. I took the picture before this came out, oops! We also had a couple appetizers and baklava for dessert, which I don't have pictures of. The star was the injera and the entrees. The baklava was too sweet for the both of us, and we couldn't finish it since we were so full. We also used a groupon here (dinner for two). Big portions and good deals!

I’ve been to this restaurant a handful of times, as I love Ethiopian food and would have it every day if I could. Luckily, Denver has a good selection of Ethiopian places on or near Colfax and I’ve frequented all of them over the past few years with mostly very pleasant experiences. With that being said, Axum is solidly in the middle of the pack. They don’t do anything spectacular but they don’t drop the ball either. Their prices are in-line with the other places as well, so no issues there. The food is always prepared well and tastes very good, but again, there’s nothing really that separates them from the pack to make me want to eat there any more than the other Ethiopian places. The 4-star rating encompasses more of my love of the cuisine than a reflection of the restaurant itself. If Axum was the only Ethiopian place in Denver, I’d eat there every few months, be blissfully happy, and give them 5 stars. However, since there are others in the area that I enjoy slightly more, they rate a 4 in my book.

Great food and interesting experience. I recommend getting the chef special combo plate.

I feel a lot of people are bashing on the service here. Sure they're not the overly polite server you find everywhere else but it's a different culture and if you talk nicely to them, they have a warm smile and take care of you. The food is fantastic and for those who didn't like it, what on Earth did you get because in the many times I've been here, I've ordered something new each time and never had a bad time. The place is a little run down but that adds to the feeling. Just try to remember, not every restaurant is perfect every day. You may go one day and have the best experience ever and go another and feel that it didn't meet your expectations. Explore, try again, give these little "off the beaten path" places a chance.
