Review Bittersweet - Denver

Angie Hegel
Had an incredible time at Bittersweet last week and terribly sad they'll be closing. Wish I had stopped by sooner. No doubt I'll be dreaming about the deconstructed crab cake for years to come. My outdoor photos don't do justice to the gorgeous plates. Best of luck and I look forward to seeing what's next for chef Olaf!!

Came here mid-February and loved the menu, maybe besides my cake and shake. Wonderful environment, food, and staff made it a luxurious experience without feeling too stiff and still down to earth. Some nitpicks from me on the food result in the 4 star but still a great dining experience. Beef Wellington was definitely the highlight for me. It was simply amazing. The lobster bisque had an unfortunately dry lobster tail which may have been a result of bringing all second courses out at the same time. Also the foraged mushroom in the bisque was delicious but wished they served more than one small piece! The cake and shake was advertised as a carrot cake but didn't really taste like a traditional carrot cake. Harder cake with a dense frosting that wasn't a traditional cream cheese frosting ended up having it taste more akin to an overly sweet storebought cupcake rather than a carrot cake with a balance of spices and a sweet yet mildly savory cream cheese frosting.

Came for valentines, and we were greeted with an amazing 4 course tasting menu. Every dish was perfect and too our liking and the service was even better. The environment was very cozy and romantic. The portions were perfect, we left feeling happily full but not overly stuffed. Come for not only amazing food but a great experience!

Myself and a few friends came here for dinner over the weekend. We had never been here but reading the previous reviews it did not disappoint! The food and service was amazing. Our waitress was very polite and knowledgeable about each dish we were served. There isn't anything that we would change at all. We truly enjoyed everything they had to offer and I would definitely dine again if im in the area.

Absolutely excellent. Artfully decorated, exceptional service with unique and thoughtful cuisine that seemed to come from home garden ingredients. We had the prefix fixe menu so we had a series of dishes that we well presented and in the appropriate proportions. I imagine the menu changes with the season so I won't review any specific dish, but I did include photos and it was all very good.

I was very impressed by this restaurant. From the beginning to the end everything was fantastic. I got a pinot noir from Portland that had a very fruity and pepperi, honestly I was not expecting a good wine but it surprised me. We got a bread that kind of a cookie with a scone flavor with a beautiful piece of herbal butter. - To start we got a "Foie-Li-Pop" which was a master piece, very well presented and good balance of flavors with the bread, the foie gras and the brûlée banana. - Then we got the "Peach in the Blanket", presentation and garnishing were perfect, there was a base of chopped shallots with peach with a little acidity in and some sweetness which taste like a ceviche. There was a side blackberry caviar. - We also tried the "Mushroom Tart", very beautiful. The tart looked it was baked and it was perfectly cooked, very flavorful and well executed. - For the main dish, we selected the "Char Siu Beef Short Rib". This was really well done, I felt the meat was melting in my mouth and definitely it was slow cooked with perfect seasoning and good taste. The green-beans were a bit under cooked but I don't know if that was the intention of the chef, but that was a very minor detail. - "Decadence by Design" was our first dessert. The ice was delicious, it felt we were eating condense milk in an ice cream. The croquette and the glaze peached were a perfect combination of flavors. - The last thing was "Peaches & Persimmon" it was a good dessert but our favorite was the "Decadence by Design". I will definitely would love to come back when I returned to Denver. Cheers

I am only able to give it 4 stars. Due to the main course lamb was bit off. Too salty for the entire group. The service was great. The presentation is very pretty and artistic. The first course and second course were excellent, main course was salty and the dessert was only OK.

Great food and service. Got a wine pairing as well. I recommend for a date night or a special occasion. A small basket of bread would have made it even greater, but it was still wonderful.

We had an amazing experience at Bittersweet. The food and wine pairings were amazing. Would highly recommend for folks looking for a delicious tasting menu. Our favorite dishes of the evening were the Lamb Chops with pistachios and the Braised Rabbit.

We've read the uneven reviews. Fortunately, for us, we caught the service and chef on a GREAT night. We've been to many of the fine restaurants in Denver and our meal at Bittersweet was one of the best ever. We came in early, so we were able to park in their lot, get a table next to the fireplace and all the dishes was perfectly prepared and held an element of uniqueness to them. The homemade rigatoni with mussels in a cream sauce was perfect for a winter night. The sunchoke and beet appetizer was inventive and wonderfully constructed. The lamb and scallop entrees were good-sized portions and satisfying. All the courses at Bittersweet were artfully presented, and the ingredients were brought together in a very tasteful, sophisticated and harmonious way and not just "fancy" food that wasn't particularly interesting or tasty. The dessert with lemon/rosemary cake, olive oil gelato and blood oranges on a hazelnut crunch was complex and not too sweet. We saw others with cocktails that looked well-crafted and enjoyed by the recipients such that we wish we ordered some earlier too. Overall, a great find. Can't fully appreciate the other less than stellar reviews but I guess we'll just count our blessings that we had a truly outstanding experience. We'll be back.

I rarely do rate things but service, food, and price were all very poor. Waitress never came around, didn't know the menu and seemed spaced out. $60 prime rib which she said was 18oz was very small and fatty. Vegetarian dinner was also not good and what was on menu was different than what was served. Would not recommend or be returning.

The food was delicious. The fabulous flavor combinations and artfully displayed dishes made the meal delightful.

One of my favorite restaurants! The staff is excellent and the food is beyond delicious! Not to mention how beautiful it looks. Thanks for a great night!

Worst dining experience I have ever had. The food was so awful and out of 9 people all but 2 sent the food back. When I complained about my fish being over cooked they brought out a raw piece of fish instead. I'm guessing the chef wasn't pleased I sent it back and was trying to prove a point. The worst part of it all was management! They did absolutely nothing to make it better or even apologize, he was so rude!

MMMMM!!!! I am still thinking about that meal. I very nearly licked the plate. Had there not been other diners, I would have. (The bisque was funny...I expected a bowl of soup and it was more of an, um, arrangement, but then I'm pedestrian, and it was SO delicious,.)

Awesome place... great food... fantastic service...: totally enjoyed the evening.

Delicious dishes, interesting flavors, and a nerdy wine list, all served up in a cozy, intimate dining room. Love it!

Wow, just love the food at Bittersweet! Can't wait to back and order another pastry treat.

Sensational dining experience. Delicious, complex flavors. Best ever bread and desserts to die for especially the peach pudding, try it while in season.

Came for restaurant week. The portions are TINY. After a $100+ dollar bill, we left hungry. The food was great but you really pay for the presentation. Not sure if we’d go back.

Let's see...poorly trained, rude staff that do not understand the fine dining experience...and they were sloooooow. I understand there should be a relaxed pace to fine dining but you should probably great your table and bring ordered bottle of wine in appropriate time. Now the food - I don't think we got any. The portions were tiny, I mean virtually non existent. I know what you're thinking, "he's probably just a stupid, fat American". Actually, no. I'm a lean runner/cyclist/mountaineer and if I'm spending $30-40+ on an entree I want food. I had to fill up on bread and wanted a pizza when I left. Oh, and the presentation - typical fad bullsh#t with dots of this and baby poo smears of that. Terrible and expensive experience. Avoid at all costs. Not allowed to put url in post so Google this article on NPR (worth it and you should too Bittersweet) - "Haute Dots Of Sauce: Culinary Art Or A Horror Show On A Plate?"

I look forward to this time of year to try a new place. Food and wine excellent! Our server was the most disrespectful woman I've encountered. I told my date he spent two hundred dollars for me to get treated badly! Never going back. I'll try the little restaurant across the street that looked inviting and fun Telegraph.
