Review Sweet Basil - Dallas

Elizabeth Disney-Fanning
Visited for the first time tonight and had an amazing experience. We were warmly greeted by who I believe is the owner, and all the staff were so friendly and attentive. The gentleman who clears tables and replenishes tea was amazingly attentive and kind. Food was great as well, I wish I took a photo of what we ordered! The atmosphere is so peaceful and cozy, especially with the holiday decor. It seems a lot of other guests who came tonight were regulars, and the seemed to have a good relationship with the staff and vice versa. That’s an amazing sign, and you don’t get that time of customer-employee relationship at most restaurants. They seem to treat their guests like family. 🙂 (Edit: after reading other reviews, I realize a man and his wife who left a review a few months ago were in the restaurant tonight! Again, having regulars like this really tells you this place is quality ). They also have a good variety of wine, and the prices are reasonable. Can’t wait to come back !

One of my favorite restaurants in Addison. The sweetest people you have ever met combined with truly amazing food. The BEST lobster bisque I have ever had in my life! It is a must try when you are in town.

Michael the owner brings ambiance makes you feel like you're part of the family that you're going to visit and the food is the best Italian I've ever had. His long time employee David former servicemen that has worked for Michael for quite a while is our favorite waiter. Also Coco, on pain of death it seems will keep your water class and your tea glass topped off no matter what it's like his superpower to know when to pop up and top off your glass.LOL. Honestly treat yourself to this or your special spouse or partner. The lobster bisque is exquisite It holds up to anyplace else I've been. And the chicken parmesan and type of bread are incredible. Anytime you have a special occasion I suggest you go there. Anytime you want to have a special occasion I'll suggest you go there. If you do have a large party they appreciate if you will call ahead and make sure that they get set up for you so I would call a day ahead. Michael is such an incredible restauranteer and bike says feel like we're actually a family friend. And no matter what you get is worth every penny. My wife and I have gotten to a point where we usually box up half of it and have the same meal at home the next day. And it's still great. So treat yourself to this experience.

What a nice little gem of a restaurant. Greated at the door quickly and seated quickly as well. My server David was awesome, very attentive and very eager to please. My Roman Pork Chops were excellent. If you are in the area you have to visit. Ok I came back when I was in town and David was my server again, same great service as last time. If you want some nice Italian food this should be at the top of your list.

So. This place gives me complicated feelings. Food was... Good. Lasagna came out in less than 10 minutes, and tasted like it was from frozen. Idk if it actually was, but 10 minutes or less is pretty fast. "Oven fresh" bread was just barely above room temp when it came out. Serving sizes are small, but the price was too. So I guess I should have expected that. Salad was fresh and well put together, but again, a small serving. House dressing was good enough, but nothing I'll remember in an hour from now. The service was the saving grace here. Absolutely top notch service. Overall, for the price of a large combo at jack in the box, I got a salad, and lasagna with fresh bread. No complaints, just nothing to "write home about". Atmosphere is also rather great.

The Authenticity of this restaurant is exquisite, starting from the service to the food. Reasonable price for such delicious food. Everything tasted fresh. Highly Recommend everyone to try this hidden treasure.

Amazing dishes, ambiance and service! I came at lunch and ordered the lobster bisque soup and a salmon Cesar salad. Wow! The lobster bisque was excellent with chunks of lobster. The salmon was perfectly grilled on a crisp bed of romaine. And the service was wonderful- I was greeted by the owner, and the all the staff were very attentive. Five stars! Want to spend your time and money on something of value? Go to Sweet Basil!

Very delicious. Excellent quiet romantic atmosphere. House moscato was a little flat but I still downed it. Wouldn't try it again. Pricing for serving was very nice. Salad was fresh and crisp. Chicken parmesan was delicious. Everything was on point. Even service.

We ordered pasta for pick up- food was great and was ready quick! The staff I talked to(bartender and owner) were so friendly and helpful. We will be back soon to dine-in!

I probably got here at the perfect time. The wait staff was attentive and not pushy. The atmosphere is very relaxed. Tasteful art adorns the walls and gentle music serenades you as very good food is brought out. I had the veal schnitzel and I highly recommend it. Very clean, as well.

Kind of a hidden gem in Carrollton. It has a nice and comfortable atmosphere with good food that is reasonably priced.

Quite possibly the best little Italian restaurant in Carrollton. This place is absolutely amazing! The food is all handmade, rustic, and delicious! The service warrants 5 stars and so does the food. There's no wonder that it's been open for 30 years. I can't believe I've never been here. We came on date night and will definitely be back!!!

Romantic date night Italian restaurant! I tried the linguini with white clam sauce (there’s also a red), the clam appetizer, and battled my husband for some of the coffee ice cream pie. The food was delicious and the service was spot on as well.

The food is so amazing, but it's the icing on the cake because of the ambiance, service and the owner is the nicest and makes sure everyone has an amazing experience. It's a must try.

Staff was very attentive and friendly. Food was 10/10. Sweet Basil had a clean, warm environment. Will be coming here again next time I’m in Dallas.

As someone who has lived in Italy and recently come back to the states, this place is the closest I have ever come to feeling like I am back overseas. The ambiance contains the classic Italian atmosphere while also incorporating iconic Italian pieces making it very touristy chic.
The staff is beyond phenomenal. They remembered not only my boyfriend and me from the last time we came to visit but the exact table we sat at last time, making us feel right at home. They are always anticipating our needs yet not hovering even when it is slow.
We went there for the brunch where we could get delicious mimosas and thirst-quenching lemonade. The ravioli was delicious with the creamy tomato sauce and very filling. We have also had the Chicken Artichoke and the Roman pork chop, and I must say we are baffled how they can keep them so delectably juicy yet perfectly grilled with a nice char around it.

Sweet Basil is the perfect date place for a lovely romantic time (all without breaking the bank), or if you want to relax with family, you haven't seen in a while. I highly recommend this place, and I can't wait to come again!

Eating Out
Nice Neighborhood Option. Sweet Basil serves up some great food with some misses. The Beverly Hill salad is well done with a nice blend of bleu cheese, walnut & balsamic vinaigrette. The thinly pounded Sweet Basil Chicken had a hint of paprika mixed into the white wine sauce and mushrooms that made it taste really good. The thin spaghetti with sauce was not that great. The minestrone soup was also not my favorite.

The atmosphere of the restaurant is well done. It gives off a cozy feeling. The servers are always polite and helpful. The aging yellow awning out front is misleading, so do not let it influence your decision give this place a try.

Food is dependably good wish service was. Service can be super good or very very bad. Hint to owners, be sure your servers bathe, shampoo and have a breath mint. Some of your people don't.
Christina
Shocked at the good reviews. Salad for an extra 2.50 was just a bunch of iceberg lettuce!! Lasagna was so salty and meat so nasty. Pesto dish was all cream and no pesto. WILL NEVER GO AGAIN!!!

Good service. Good lighting. Quiet.

Very Disappointed With Manager's Conduct. I am a regular customer to this restaurant and I normally order takeout. In the last two weeks, I've tried to order delivery from the Yelp website twice. The first time the order couldn't be delivered because it was too close (not past!) the delivery cutoff. The second time, I placed the order and my credit card was charged then I get a call saying there are no drivers for the delivery service and my order was cancelled. After the second delivery attempt, I called the restaurant to discuss why my delivery orders can never be placed. When I was explaining to the manager my issue, he interrupted me three times, saying over and over "we don't deliver." When I said I didn't appreciate being interrupted and I was a regular customer, his solution was to come to the restaurant and "if he recognized my face" I'd get a free lunch. The he stated there are restaurants all over Dallas and I could go to one of those. Manager is RUDE and UNPROFESSIONAL. He blamed his customer for using Yelp to order. Seriously?? I just hope the owners of the restaurant are aware of this guy causing problems for their customers.

This place was awesome! we walked in and was highly impressed of how nice the table layout and charming the restaurant looked. the waiter was great, recommending great items and was always checking on us. food was excellent and reasonable prices. the owner was nice enough to serve us even though the doors were already closed and locked. definitely coming back for years to come.

Still yummy after all these years. I have always liked the atmosphere - smallish but not too small dining room, soft lighting - but not exactly dark or romantic- a few booths but they have these 4-6 top round tables that are so perfect for a group dining experience. It's quiet enough for good conversation but not so quiet that you can't relax and enjoy a good laugh. The food is very good- not always outstanding - but consistently very good. Last night I had the chicken parmisan; fork tender, a nice crunch and the marinara was fresh and bright. My husband had the fresh tagliatelle w/ bolognese and he's still raving about it. The pasta was truly fresh! Our guests ordered the veal Parmesan and the Roman pork chops and bith were exceptional! We had bruschetta as an appetizer and it was some of the best I've ever had. The service was attentive without being annoying and all the staff was friendly and helpful. We've been away from this place for awhile but we will put it back on our regular rotation for sure!

Waiter was creepy. My friend ordered a salad with ranch and he brought it out with a pink house dressing. She told him and he looked at her like he was lying. Very weird... My husband ordered a steak sandwich, cooked medium. Came out well done and the A1 steak sauce they gave him expired in 2007!!!!!! Wow. Eat at the Grandys across the street. Do Not eat here!!!! It is a health hazard.

Dare I say... neighborhood gem?. This place had been on my list for a little while, and we finally got a chance to try it on a Sunday night. Situated in a strip mall at the NE corner of Midway and Trinity Mills, the place doesn't look like much - very unassuming, to say the least. But once inside, you notice that the place is cozy and nicely decorated. There's a small bar up front, along with a patio and two main dining rooms. It's nothing fancy, but very comfortable.

When we walked in, we were greeted by the owner, who was very gracious and friendly. He seated us at our table, took our drink orders, and brought us menus. As he whisked back to the bar, our waiter arrived to tell us about the specials. Once we had mulled things over, we decided on three specials and one off-the-menu item.

To keep us from gnawing our hands off, they brought bread and house salads ($2 extra for a salad big enough to share - hell of a deal). The bread was nice and crusty, and the creamy Italian house dressing was perfect sopping fodder for the bread. A very nice start...

So, how was dinner? Let's start with the three specials.

I ordered the steak au poivre (but you can just call it "pepper steak") and it was spot-on. It came out medium-rare, exactly as ordered, and the rich peppercorn sauce was just fantastic. A nice dollop of mashed potatoes and a few sprigs of asparagus also came along for the ride. By the time I was done, I had sopped every last smear of goodness with the last piece of bread. Yum!

Next up was Veal Oscar - veal cutlet topped with crab meat, asparagus, and bearnaise. Can you say rich? And awesome? Again, another win for the tastebuds. The veal was tender, the crab tasted fresh, and the sauce was rich and velvety. Thumbs up!

Our last special was sea bass with a light poblano cream sauce. I think I can safely say that I haven't had better sea bass in a long while. It was broiled up in butter so it had a slight hint of a crust, and biting into it was like nibbling on a cloud. I almost swapped plates with my dinner mate, but I really had my heart set on steak. So, yeah, it was effing great too.

The last one at our table ordered the mussels and linguini, and it looked great. However, by the time I got around to asking for a mussel, they were all gone. Suffice to say, I'll vouch for it's goodness. Maybe I'll try it next time...

Service was top notch, but not at all pretentious. The servers we dressed casually in black slacks and black polo shirts, so they slipped around the joint like short-sleeved ninjas. Our cocktails were more than generous, and dessert was enough to put me soundly into a food coma once I got back home.

Price? Well, considering we had steak (filet), veal, and sea bass, PLUS a couple of drinks each, AND dessert, I'd say it wasn't half-bad. Certainly more expensive than Olive Garden, but not at all unreasonable.

So there you go... it may not look like much from the road, but it's definitely worth checking out. Two really big thumbs up!

Lunch date ruined. Everything was fine until we received our bill. We were charged for a caesar salad and when I questioned the waitress about it, she went to the back and I could hear her manager (I'm assuming he is the owner) getting upset that she was going to remove the $3.50 salad from our bill due to a misunderstanding. The manager came out to my table and made a scene with us regarding the salad price and our misunderstanding of the cost. I then agreed to pay for the salad, but then the manager went a step further by going to get a menu and pointing out to me in a deragatory manner that HIS menu was very clear on the pricing. I again said that I would be happy to pay for the salad but all this man cared about was proving that he was right. I felt that he was making a big deal out of nothing and frankly it ruined a perfectly good lunch. Bad move on his part. Because of his attitude and the way he belittled me on this issue, I will NOT return. There are plenty of italian restaurants to choose from. I am a consumer and I have a choice where I spend my money. I will not recommend this place to anyone else either. I am extremely sympathetic to anyone who works for him. I heard him giving our waitress the "third degree" as we were exiting the restaurant. I feel that it would have been in his best interest to suck up the $3.50 rather than go to the extreme he did in making his point.

During our first visit, we ordered on the advice of the waiter an were surprised by $30 per plate meals. The food was good, but not enough to offset the bill.

The best itallian food I've had outside New York. And a very nicely-done interior.

Bland and dull. The food was bland and dull. The lobster bisque tasted canned. The tomatoes in the caprese salad were mushy and unripe. The chicken was tough.

If this is someone's idea of great Italian food, they've spent too much time at Olive Garden.
