Review The Slow Bone - Dallas

Jessie Kempf
I love local restaurants and the BBQ here met all expectations. They do not have dine in at this time but have tables outside. The brisket had the perfect smoke ring/flavor, moist, and taste was delicious. Staff greeted us with a smile and provided exceptional service. The pinto beans was my favorite side along with the hush puppies. We also tried the potato salad, not a fan due to having horseradish in it, but if you are a fava of it, then you can't go wrong! If ever in area again I will definitely stop by!!

Slow Bone has earned a spot in Texas Monthly Magazine's 2021 The 50 Best BBQ Joints. And deservedly so. This was our 90th 'cue stop in Texas, and the 389th in a 35 state BBQ odyssey. $44.92 purchased a quarter pound of fatty brisket, a half pound of jalapeno cheddar sausage, 2 pieces of fried chicken (white meat), 2 pieces of cornbread, two hush puppies, a pint of horseradish potato salad, and a serving of Brussels sprouts au gratin. With the exception of the very dry hush puppies, everything else was on point. The brisket is buttery in texture, with good bark, smoke and flavor, but be warned: the fatty end cuts are roughly 50% fat, which we discarded. The sausage is exquisite, the chicken sensational-- a term that could be equally applied to the potato salad and Brussels sprouts. And what can one say about the cornbread? It is one of the best that we have encountered in Texas, a truly sublime bite! We highly recommend this restaurant, which has seating both inside and out, but limited parking. It's best to be there around the opening.

Great Texas BBQ. Amazing 😍. Great flavors, fresh meats, cool location. I was here for a conference and it was near the Hilton Anatole. Brisket and pork ribs were the best. Definitely a must try location if you are in Dallas.

First time in Dallas for a conference, and found this BBQ place walking distance to our hotel. So we went for lunch, and we were all blown away by how tender the beef ribs were, the meat just melted in our mouths, and the briskets were so flavorful, sweet potatoes were delicious which had some ginger, cinnamon and pecans in them. Got a tamarind flavored soda, very refreshing. The owner was very nice, and the place is very clean, service was great overall. Would definitely come back again if ever in Dallas

I saw the review in Texas Monthly, so I put this place on my "Must Try BBQ" list. I had to go to Dallas today and BAM!! I knew that this would be the day I get to try Slow Bone BBQ. I was NOT disappointed. Immediately upon entering Slow Bone, I knew this place was gonna be great. I had a sliced brisket sandwich, horseradish potato salad, and mustard slaw. All EXCELLENT!! The brisket was perfectly prepared. I could tell just by looking at it. Once I bit down on the brisket, my taste buds were in heaven. The bun was also perfect. I couldn't have been happier with their BBQ. I also loved the horseradish potato salad and mustard slaw, which were both very unique. In conclusion, if I lived nearby, I'd be dining here at least once a week for my BBQ fix. I can't wait to get back here. I look forward to trying their pork and their ribs. And I was told to try the cornbread pudding. I shall on my next visit.

A solid bbq place! I had the Texas Nail Sandwich, Marinated smoked pork chop grill finished and jalapeños cheddar sausage w/ collard green sides... a really good sando & the pork chop was tender, moist and juicy. I see why they're on the Texas magazine top 50 list! Get there early!

Came here on a Saturday morning right at opening time. No wait. Friendly staff. The pork ribs, brisket, sausage, regular, and spicy. My complaint was that the food was served lukewarm because they were kept warm in aluminum foil. Otherwise the meat was seasoned nicely. Having food that is hot important to me so this missed the mark unfortunately. There are many great bbq places in DFW and slow bone bbq is solid but does not stand out. Great lemonade though

First off, this place screams craft BBQ. You see it from the road, nothing fancy, no frills, just great BBQ. Well, they didn’t disappoint. Brisket was juicy, nice bark and night fat rendering. Smokey flavor without being overbearing, texture was solid but still tender. I also ordered the hickory smoked sausage. It was good. A little on the dry side but nothing to hold it against them. Great flavor, good texture. Definitely worth the money. Sauces: unfortunately, this is one area i feel they fall short, i tried all of them. Their house are siracha was WAY too sweet. I was hoping for spice. The other sauces were too tart i feel to compliment the meats. Price: again, i don’t mind paying for great craft bbq, but i feel the prices are a little steep. I own a restaurant so i understand meat prices, staff costs etc, but for no sides, no drink, two slices of brisket, 7 pieces of sausage and a TINY chicken tender, $30 puts a hurt on your wallet. Likely won’t go out of my way to eat here, just because of the prices. But he definitely knows his craft. Keep up the good work.

We arrived the place at around 2pm couple of days ago, as the only 2 Asians in the restaurant, it was our first time trying Texas BBQ. The owner was super nice to us, he was trimming the meat when seeing us had no idea where to start, so he introduced what they got and we ordered some sausages along with beef and 2 sides. The meat were excellent, tender, juicy and flavorful, the mac&cheese and mashed sweet potato added the gem on the crown. The atmosphere was also nice, you simply choose the sauce you want on the bar, everyone looked friendly to us. Definitely recommend this place!

OK this place is great. They have amazing brisket really good ribs. Believe it or not they always get the awards for some of the best fried chicken in the metroplex. So if you go definitely get at least one piece of fried chicken it’s really good. Their side dishes are amazing lots of different type of casseroles. And if you go at 11 o’clock when they open they have these chocolate chip cookies that are right out of the oven that are amazing. They could open their own store based on the chocolate chip cookies alone. The cookies aren’t as good after they’ve been sitting out for a couple hours because they tend to get really hard I don’t know why they just do. But those cookies are amazing. And believe it or not on Fridays is freaky Friday fried rice day and it will be the best fried rice you’ve ever had in your life and they put two ribs on it. I know it sounds odd but it’s unbelievable. I have taken the freaky Friday fried rice to several customers and now I get it requested every single Friday. Everyone at the restaurant is very nice especially the owner. They were awarded top 50 barbecue spots in Texas in 2022. So remember, brisket, ribs, fried chicken, chocolate chip cookies, and most of all freaky Friday fried rice!!!!!!

The smoked turkey sandwich was very moist and tasty, and the brisket beans tasted fantastic! A great place for lunch!

This is hands-down some of the best BBQ in Dallas, especially for the prices. The brisket is great. The cheddar and jalapeño stuffed sausage is amazing! I also tried the Beef Ribs which were exceptional (those that eat Beef Ribs know how hard it is to find a good beef rib.) The Jalapeño Mac & Cheese, Buttered Squash and Horseradish Mashed Potatoes are all excellent choices. The staff and customer service are also above average. They are only open from 11Am-3PM, and because of the limited parking in their lot, I recommend getting there as close to 11 as possible. Also, the cover to noon and you will be standing in the long line out the door. Don't let the parking deter you. There is a warehouse across the street and I see that a number of people park there where parking is plentiful and walk across the street.

I had the pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw on top, plus sweet potato casserole, for lunch and it was all very good. The flavors were great. The service was friendly and there was plenty of seating inside. A great place to go for lunch, since they are only open from 11a-3p. Had free parking in a small lot as well.

I was in Dallas for the Eric Church concert & this place came up as being within walking distance from my hotel. Let me just say I would fly back to Dallas to eat here! I had the brisket, ribs, greens, Brussels sprout cauliflower, & hush puppies & every bite was just as delicious & perfect from beginning to end! I've eaten at a lot of barbecue places around the country & Slow Bone is one of my top 5 favorites!

Best brisket and fried chicken in Dallas! Friendly, efficient service but can get. Yay during lunchtime rush. Can't go wrong with Slow Bone for getting your BBQ fix.

The Bone has some unique and original style Q especially for DFW. You'll love it or hate it but you need to come find out which way you lean. My favorite of the 3 meats I tried was the brisket. Several reviewers have mentioned it's fatty, a bit much for me but great flavor, bark and moistness. The ribs were a bit dry, not too bad. They let the dry rub shine through, that's one of the unique parts, I can't put my finger on it, southwest? Different. The chicken was good, dark meat was moist but there's that flavor again, better on the chicken in my opinion. The sides show that originally again, the Brussel sprouts and cauliflower casserole was my favorite. Good crunch and taste. The sweet potato casserole was good also thou leaning to the sweet side. The people and service were terrific, really into their place. Another cool note, a goodie bar with jalapeño & carrot relish, chimichurri sauce, bread & butter pickles etc. A big thumbs up for fresh cut lime by the drinks!

Great Barbeque with a little twist. Fun joint like atmosphere as well. Always a crowd for lunch so come early... Or late as you prefer đŸ‘đŸŒđŸ‘đŸŒđŸ‘đŸŒ

Best BBQ brisket I have ever eaten. The rub is awesome. Can cut the brisket with a fork. Sauce is tangy and not too sweet. Cauliflower Brussels sprout casserole is to die for

Really great bbq. I had chicken and brisket and both were delicious. Good homemade Mac n cheese plus delicious tomato cucumber salad. We had food from here at my office and everyone seemed to really like it. I would go there for sure.

Walking distance from The Hotel Anatole--big plus! Amazing brisket and side dishes! Great find...

Could have been better. The food was tender and the bark on the Q was good. You wait in line to place your order and go through a cafeteria line of sorts before you are seated. The place is nothing fancy by any standard. The owners don't invest in the facility, that is for certain. My main complaint was that ribs and brisket were very fat. I know they use a very long and slow process but it fails to render a large amount of the fat. I have not seen this much fat in BBQ food in a long time. Some people like the juicy, fat and tender Q. If this is you, this is your place. Unlike a lot of places, the sauces tend toward the sweet side. Again, not a complaint per-se but an observation. If you like sweet sauces, this place is for you. I would probably not go back because of the fat and the fact that the price was a little steep for lunch although the portions are generous.

Not impressed. Very disappointed, small portions,on cafeteria divided tray, fried okra dry and cold, also sides were very small portions. I'm from Dallas there are lots better places than this, Macs on Main or Bakers rib on Commerce. Sad that visitors at the Anatole think this is good Texas BBQ

Excellent Texas BBQ. Brisket moist.
Veggies yummy & fresh.
I didn't really care for the BBQ sauce but just my preference.

Disgusting. Two strikes your out! Without a doubt the worst food and especially the chopped brisket I have ever tried to eat. Left most on the plate as was nothing but a salty, greasy mess. Greasy okra, slaw with mustard that was uneatible, horrible potato salad, bland nothing but boiled squash. Out Labor Day outing was ruined! Our first visit several weeks ago was bad and today was the worst. Lesson learned!

One of the 3 best BBQ joints in the Big D. I have eaten here five times and have been delighted each time. My only 'complaint' is that they do not offer pulled pork; otherwise, I rate this place 'right up there' with Pecan Lodge & Lockhart.

Most who read UrbanSpoon know this, but I'll say it anyway: disregard any 'nasty' review that is the ONE & ONLY review posted by the 'reviewer'.

We had the chicken and a chopped sandwich both were good, the sides looked good enough to have only eaten those

Just don't get it!. Owner is as rude as they come. If you say anything other than his product is perfect his defensive demeanor rises to the top. He has a decent product in an area where there is no other to speak of. Brisket has a over smoked taste as does the pork. Ribs are very good sides well above average. I just can get past the Better that y'all attitude of owner.

Dry brisket - no difference between the moist (fatty) end and the lean end. The bark was excessively bitter. Ribs ok - meaty and moist. Sausage is no better than grocery store variety. All meats screamed for a hit of seasoning - just salt would work. Skimpy sides. Expensive prices for knock-off bbq.

Not Sure About this Place. Went for a late lunch on a Sat. Was not super hungry and menu board was sort of unclear but saw 1/2 lb of meat was $6.99 so I asked about getting a sliced beef sandwich and a couple of sides. Manager?? cut meat and placed on plate and handed off to another worker. Guess I don't get bread with a sandwich. Oh well picked out two sides and asked for water to drink. Total was $14.06 Asked two different people what 1/2 lb was and got two fairly non interested answers so let it drop. Sides were good and hot but meat was barely warm and had little smoky flavor. Sauce was average. Managers?? were more interested in eating behind the counter than interacting with customers. Maybe I was at a wrong place at a wrong time but I was not impressed with a place that someone put a lot of time and effort in making it unique but if they don't care why should I??

The metal under the sides bar is EXTREMELY hot. BE CAREFUL! I scalded my knee and the rude manager, Ian Tate, said he would do nothing more to protect people or children from injuring themselves. He says there is a warning sign there but I can't remember seeing it so just be careful when you go. If you get burned like I did, apparently, you'll just get yelled at.

Excellent BBQ for DFW. As soon as you enter the restaurant, there is a cafeteria style line where you can choose your meats, hot sides, cold sides, and bread (either corn bread or hush puppies). I ordered the brisket, the St. Louis style ribs, and the "Old Time" Sausage. For sides, I got beans, fried okra, and hush puppies. The brisket and ribs were absolutely fantastic. Lots of bark on the brisket and the ribs had a fantastic rub that was sweet, with a hint of spicy. The sausage wasn't particularly impressive, but it wasn't bad either. It just paled in comparison to the brisket and ribs. The beans and hush puppies were good, but the fried okra was perfect. It was some of the best fried okra I have ever had. My brother also let me try a piece of his pork loin, which was decent, but not great. To aid in digestion, I got the apple-mint iced tea, which was very refreshing
I will be going back to The Slow Bone to eat. Although disappointed with the sausage and the barbecue sauce (which wasn't needed for the brisket and ribs), the brisket, ribs, and okra will have me coming back.

While the portions sizes were very good, that's about the only positive there is about The Slow Bone. Servers could have cared less that they had customers. Meat was tender and juicy, but totally flavorless. BBQ sauce was vinegary and watery. Had the macaroni and cheese and brussel sprout casseroles and they were dried out and once again flavorless. Was really wanting to like this place, but just couldn't.

Ordered the two meat platter for lunch: Brisket and Ribs with fried okra (dried shriveled up tasteless pellets) and an unusual cauliflower/Brussels Sprouts salad made like a potato salad (equally bone dry and tasteless). The sauce helped both a little, but barely.
But what about the meats: ribs were meaty with a hint of smoke, moist, and generally good. The brisket had a more pronounced smokey flavor, my moist-requested cut was indeed moist, and way better than the ribs. I'm in love.
This is a small place with a smaller parking lot, so carpool with your companions and when you are done eating get up and leave (not like the two business people next to me who hogged a four-top, pulled out spreadsheets and started working the whole time I ate. Pigs).

I will be going back to The Slow Bone to eat. Although disappointed with the sausage and the barbecue sauce (which wasn't needed for the brisket and ribs), the brisket, ribs, and okra will have me coming back. The Slow Bone gets a 8 on my 10-point scale. I would not consider this place a top tier barbecue joint like Pecan Lodge, but it was still very good. Right now, I would prefer to go to the Slow Bone because the lines are much shorter (at least for now). Before I left, I made sure I got a pound of brisket and a half-rack of ribs to go so I could enjoy some good barbecue for the rest of the week.
The Slow Bone is on the fast track to becoming the new top dog of Dallas barbecue.
