Review Pepe's & Mito's Mexican Cafe - Dallas

Stopped in here for dinner on our way to a concert at Dos Equis Pavilion. Even though we came in on a Saturday night, we were seated quickly. Service was very friendly and food and drinks came out quickly. There are complementary chips and salsa, and both are very good. Chips are thick and crunchy. I had the spicy skinny margarita, which was fantastic. My wife had a Paloma, which was also very good. Big menu with standard Tex Mex options, which is a good thing! My wife had the deep-fried mini tacos from the appetizer menu (similar to Jack-in-the-Box, but actually homemade and tasty), and I had the combo plate with enchiladas and a beef fajita taco. Highly recommended if you’re in the area looking for a good Tex-Mex dinner!

I have to say, this place was surprisingly good. I don't like Tex-Mex but this is a Mex-Tex place. Husband had the Carnitas, I had the cheese enchiladas with us trying the tamale and sopapias. Alyssa was wonderful and the owner came out to talk with us. I always find that professional and down to earth and makes our visit more enjoyable. Wish we were staying longer but will remember this place for sure! Thank you!

Been in Dallas for a conference. Walked around Deep Ellum for something to eat. The heat was sweltering in September. Stumbled into Warstic Flagship Store and the employees there recommended Pepe’s & Mitos. They said it was the best food in all of Deep Ellum and they were not wrong. The chips and salsa were great. The chips were nice and hot. The nachos were great (my colleague and I got chicken). For dinner, I had the Enchiladas and they were just to die for. The servers were friendly and funny! The murals and decor inside are beautiful. If I lived here, I’d be here all the time and you’d have to roll me down the street.

Just look at the texture on the Chipotle sauce, I thought it was Mole. This was incredible.
GG Gonzalez
I went there for a late lunch and ordered their Queso with chili con carne as an appetizer, it was good. I also ordered their Chicken enchiladas in their Mole Sauce with double rice and it was SOOO GOOOD! My Hubby had the Carne Asada Mexicana and that too was delicious. Our Server Alyssa was so nice and very attentive. The Atmosphere was cool. I most definitely will go back!

This place was one of a few recommended by the hotel I was staying in. Glad I chose here! Greeted by the friendly staff and right away the nachos and homemade salsa arrived to my table. Soup was not on my mind but it looked too good to pass on. The flavours were layered and delicious! A must try if you stop by. Next came the entree, Fajitas! Served with the a side plate of toppings filled with rice, refried beans, pico, guacamole and sour cream. Everything exceeded expectations! Bonus is they have soda in bottles if you feel like having one. Thanks to the staff for the super friendly hosting and delicious food! Would absolutely come back next time I’m in town!

Visited for a Saturday brunch. It was busy but not packed to where we were able to get a table right away. The service was fantastic. Staff was super friendly and helpful. The food came out hot and delicious. No drink specials, unfortunately. They do have a covered patio facing the street which would have been nice but it was extremely hot this day. Overall, great place to grab a chill brunch in Deep Ellum. **Parking may be tricky, be sure to check costs before parking.

Became my favorite texmex restaurant in Dallas!!! (Well Dallas is also the best place to get texmex so i guess i am saying this place is the best texmex place in my life!) their complimentary chip and salsa is super good that I even forgot to take a picture, super crunchy and salsa is soft and delicious. Their award winning taco (can’t remember the exact name) is to-die-for. Taco can’t be better than this. Shrimp enchiladas was also amazing, their cheesy sour cream was really good with it. Combo #5 was just like, you get the best of everything. Loved it so much. Their mexican rice is super good too!! We had little bit of left over so brought back home, hit up with microwave and had it next day, gosh even the day after, it was super good! Never seen a texmex food that is still super good after reheated next day. Overall, amazing. Can’t wait to go back!

I have been coming here for prob 10 years or more. Love this place. The wait staff always have a smile on their face, eager to chit chat at the table and welcoming from beginning to end. The hand made tortillas are amazing as is all the authentic dishes. Awesome margaritas, cold beers and the patio is great in nice weather.

Decided to try this Tex Mex spot in Deep Elam. We were not disappointed! The food was wonderful, we especially enjoyed the flautas and quesadillas! The fresh squeezed lime margarita was the bomb! Ice cold beer, great service and phenomenal food. We will come back!

The salsa and chips were outstanding and are served as you sit down. Service was fast and good. Lunch special(carnitas)) was big enough for two lunch portion of fajitas was large, served hot and prepRed well

Had to stop by this spot because we heard Guy dropped in here. Delicious is the only way to describe the food in this restaurant. Homemade pork tamales, tacos norteños(Food network tacos as the locals refer to them as) and even the kids enchiladas were packed full of flavor. Will definitely revisit when we come to Dallas again

We heard about this restaraunt thru Triple D, they did not dissapoint, Great food ,Great Service Great Value Cold Beer and Great Marg's perhapsd the best Mexican food we have had in a Restaurant!

This is a horrible place! Terrible location with no parking except for a $3.00 self pay lot that you have to endure a stupid parking machine that wants your license tags before issuing a parking receipt. Inside the place is run-down and dirty. The 'patio' is a joke – a fenced in, walled off filth-pen where the waitress walks up and immediately asks "are you ready to order". Don't bother asking for a wine, beer, or drink list. They don't have one. Aside from the worn-out, food-stained, crumpled-up paper menu, your wine choices are an airline-size "Sutter Home" mini-bottle or nothing at all.

Chips were thick and hard. Salsa was sweet and not very spicy. That's as far as we went. We left a two dollar tip and walked out. I don't know why anyone would eat here with this wait staff, this food quality, these drink options, and this inconvenient parking situation.

Enjoyed a nice dinner here while visiting family in Dallas. We started with lots of chips, salsa, and guacamole. The guacamole is amazing and they give you quite a large serving! We had a large party and everyone ordered something different. Everyone enjoyed their food, and thought the margaritas were very good as well!!!

I can’t say that I never dine in chain restaurants, but I made it a goal several years ago to try to experience smaller, individually owned places, places that have individuality and character. Pepe’s and Mito’s Mexican Cafe in Deep Ellum is that kind of place. I found Pepe’s and Mito’s on a food app that I utilize quite often. After visiting their website, I knew that I had to try this place. While the Dallas metroplex has numerous Tex-Mex restaurants, Pepe’s and Mito’s consider their food Mex-Tex. They put the emphasis on the “Mex”. They have been featured on the Food Network Channel show Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, hosted by Guy Fieri.

I got the Quesadilla and it was yummy. The service was wonderful and I want to try everything on the menu. Overall, it was a wonderful experience in a friendly inviting atmosphere.

Our 1st time in and it was great! The family atmosphere made us feel right at home. My bride enjoy soup & taco while I went for the beef fajitas and they didn't disappoint. We rounded out the visit with some "hit the spot" deserts. Happy we ventured out from our usual go to Deep Ellum favs.

Best hidden Mexican food restaurant, I love going here! The salsa is on point and the skinny margaritas will knock you on your ass they are so yummy!!!
Prapti
Great lunch spot! Quick and good food! Got the lunch enchiladas - compared to a lot of tex-mex I've been trying lately, clearly one of the better places! :) would probably come back!

Loved Pepe's & Mito's!!! I had the Rib Eye al Tampiquena (a 10 oz. charbroiled Ribeye steak served with rice, charro beans, guacamole, pico and just-made tortillas that the friendly waiter recommended. My wife enjoyed the Tacos Nortenos and both meals were Excellent, as were the chips and salsa.
Ali Mahmoud
The crunchy tacos were really good. Liked the beef taco more than the chicken . They scimped on the amount of chicken. The salsa and chips were really fresh

We were on stay-cation, trying new places and found this little jewel in Deep Ellum. The decor is simple but nice and there is a patio that looks like it would be great during cool weather. The staff was super friendly and talked freely about items in the menu. We were brought free chips and salsa right after we were seated. The chips were a little thicker than most places, but warm and fresh. The salsa was really fresh looking and was better than what you will find at almost any chain Tex-Mex place. We tried the chipotle enchiladas, I had the chicken and my wife hade the cheese-filled. They were both fantastic! I don't know how that chipotle sauce was made but it is awesome!!! I will definitely return and recommend Pepe's and Mito's to everyone.

Had their signature dish, Tacos Nortenos. Very great corn and flour tortillas. The meat had great flavor, but maybe a bit too runny. Kind of made the tortillas a bit soggy. Overall though, it was very good! Their sides (beans and rice) tasted like any other Tex-Mex/Mexican Establishment. Service was very good. Kept the home made chips and salsa filled a long with our drinks! I'll definitely be back!

If your are looking for solid Mexican food, this is your joint. I am a creature of habit and usually get the same dish at places every time I visit - not the case here. Everything smells and looks so good that I am constantly asking my waiter what a table next to me is having! Recently we went for their brunch menu - served Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 5pm. So delicious!

Delicious authentic. Living in San Diego, visiting Mexico on weekends and living in Texas I've eaten my fair share of Mexican food. This food was excellent. Flavorful, authentic and prices reasonable. Recommend it. The place is pretty packed, a sure sign of good eats.

All of Them Are Delightful, Delicious, Damned Good. Homemade chose and salsa, Caritas, Enchiladas, it's ALL good!

-----04 Mar, 2015-----

BEST MEXICAN FOOD. Husband and I went for lunch on a Wednesday, because of course, I saw DDD, and it was the best Mexican food we've had in a long time! The Tacos Nortenas, and a Combo #5, with a chicken enchilada, spinach enchilada, and tamale. The food is fresh, stuffed with spinach and chicken, homemade, and w wonderful. The chips and salsa was delicious, and they fry their own tortillas for the chips. We will be back, even though e live in McKinney! WE WILL BE BACK BECAUSE IT'S WORTH THE DRIVE. And Pepe's wife is a SWEETHEART.

Albondiga Soup and Sopapillas. This was an awesome visit for us.
The Albondiga Soup we had never had anywhere and it was delicious.
Tacos Nortenos were all fantastic.
My enchiladas were good but I wish I had also gotten the Nortenos.
The sopapillas were so good my wife actually outraced me eating them before I realized it and when I went to split the 5th one with her, she had already eaten it.

I moved to Dallas a little over a year ago and had more trouble finding a Tex Mex place to frequent. We've tried many of the "staples" Manny's, Marrianos, Mi Cocina, Cantina Laredo, Taco Diner and a few others along the way, but NOTHING really satisfied my Tex Mex craving, UNTIL we dined at Pepe & Mitos. We had steak fajitas and the homemade tortillas hit the spot. The salsa is really good as well. This place has all of the qualities I look for in Tex Mex--good salsa, decent prices and tasty fajitas.

Don't Judge the Book by its Cover. As we drove by Pepe's at night, we saw the outside of the restaurant and the surrounding area. It is on a dark - run down part of the street, and can be quiet scary if you don't know Dallas. My friends and I were so close to passing on the "ghetto" looking Mexican restaurant, but after contemplating it decided to give it a try.

When you walk in the door, you completely forget about the area of town as the atmosphere is inviting and comforting. The host sat us down quickly, and we were served some of the greatest chips and salsa I've had. The waiter was great and spoke fluent English. I had the Botanas, which was amazing, but my friends had the chimmy changa, nachos, and enchiladas. Everyone was pleased after dinner and we were glad we decided not to judge the restaurant by its appearance from the outside.

10 out of 10. Especially because of the cleanliness of the inside as well as the bathrooms. This is a must eat!

Cool place to enjoy Mexican Food. Great find. Great casual vibe. Great experience on a late Friday afternoon. The Tacos Al Carbon were tasty, the beef and the peppers were flavorful and cooked perfectly. Pleased with the guacamole and salsa. Chips nicely thin and crispy. Margarita just O.K. Full bar. Visiting from out of town and discovered this restaurant on Urbanspoon. Friendly, prompt service; delicious food and casual atmosphere. Was a little concerned about the neighborhood, but Clientele was mid-upper scale. Lots of regulars. I would definitely go back.

Best mexican restaurant in DFW hands down!. My husband & I have been coming here for 14 years. You must try the tacos nortenos, shrimp enchiladas & tacos al Carbon. Their guacamole, salsa, boracho beans, queso, quesadillas & nachos are awesome! I would highly recommend Pepe's & Mito's!!

Great Food. The food and service were excellent. I had the Chipotle Enchiladas. This was a different dish, but very tasty. It was quite spicy, just right for me. I would recommend this place to anyone. Being close to Baylor Hospital was a big plus for me.

The food & the service were incredible. Fabulous salsa & guacamole. People's reviews were right about the Chipotle Wine sauce. That should be put on everything! I asked the manager who seated us if we needed to pay at the parking lot next door (because I hadn't seen anyone else pay), and she said "yes, what space are you in?" I told her & she said she would go take care of it for us. We never gave her any money and she said it was taken care of. We were in town for the Final Four, and we like to seek out locally-owned mom& pop places and this one delivered on all levels (I also own a restaurant and expect everything to be a positive experience). Pepe's & Mito's knocked it out of the park! Many thanks.

My favorites are the chipotle enchiladas (super spicy) and the vegetable fajitas. Great place!

Awesome. Visiting from out of town. This place is as good as the reviews say it is! Tacos al Carbon.

Excellent homemade tortillas, chips and salsa they make right there in the restaurant. It's a good triple-D place to check out if you're in downtown Dallas.

Great!!!. This is a great place!!! The food is great and the service is great. I've been here for dinner a few times. You won't be disappointed

There's Better Mexican Food. We tried this place for the first time today. We had seen it on Diners, Drive-ins & Dives and thought "why not?". The food was mediocre at best. I had a Margarita on the rocks and it was an unnatural shade of green. It did pack a little punch, but the flavor wasn't that great. The only thing that was good was the tomatillo sauce on the pork tamal. Much better queso at Maracas one street over and $1 drink specials for brunch!
CornyDoggy
BELIEVE THE HYPE. Everything we had was great. Chips & salsa, nachos, fajitas, frozen margaritas, and the carne chipotle. This is a deep ellum jewel and my new fave spot

Food...Fresh! Margaritas..... Food...Fresh!
Margaritas...Perfect!
Go...NOW!

On a Friday night at 7 we only waited about 10 minutes for a table, which was reasonable. The chips and salsa were good, as were the tortillas and queso, although they charge for both and the queso is nothing more that what you get for free at most Mexican restaurants. The food was very good, and fairly priced. The only gripe with the meal I had was with the pace of service, we waited too long to give our order and also to receive our check. The waiters were very friendly, though, so it wasn't too bad.

This place is good, but not amazing. Worth checking out, but not worthy of its 96% rating.

Classic Tex-Mex with a one of a kind Deep Ellum flavor. Pepe’s and Mito’s in the end is my favorite restaurant on Earth. That may seem a bit bold but it is more than just food to me. I used to work in Deep Ellum and would walk down to their older location at the end of the block. When I was young I watched a lot of movies and always wanted “my place” to eat where they knew me. And finally one day it happened. It was late afternoon and the sun was setting. I was in a rush but sat down anyways. I anticipated the waitress to hand me a menu but instead she turned quickly to me and said “the usual” I was stunned, my day had finally come. “Yes please”, I answered with a silly grin. [Full order of chicken fajita nachos and a large container of salsa] Since then Pepe’s and Mito’s has moved west up the block to the old mechanic’s shop. They have converted the main garage space into their dining area with roll up door still intact for convertible patio space (very clever). The menu has since received an upgrade as well. You will find a great range of appetizers and entrees from queso to more specific tastes. My new favorite is the Pollo al Mojo de Ajo. As always I hold them to my salsa standards and they are a winner. P.S. Margaritas are pretty great as well.

We ate here for lunch on a Friday afternoon. It was great. Authentic but not to heavy. Great service. (The restrooms leave a little to be desired)

Loved it!! Delicious food and wonderful service!! This was mine and my husbands anniversary dinner and it was fabulous! Margaretta was strong and delicious as well!

Wonderful mom & pop restaurant. Nothing fancy but very good food. Tortillas are exceptional.

Excellent food, great friendly service, good atmosphere in Deep Ellum. I definitely recommend

Service was horrendous! Waited 20 min. Never got served till I walked 2 the kitchen. Food OK. Not worth the hassle

Really Good Food and Hospitality. Since moving to Dallas, I think I have tried a Mexican restaurant on every corner in my neighborhood. But, none of them have had such a great atmosphere of hostess and waitresses. They were awesome, especially one in particular! Anyway, I had chicken and beef enchiladas and a sangria swirl to drink! Really good food and the drink was ON POINT. I'll def go back :)

The chips are too thick for the watery (but tasty) salsa: the Carne La Chipotle on the lunch menu (#14) was very good.
Devin Johns
There was definitely hype from it being on Diners Drive-Ins and Dives but it was worth the hype. The tacos were awesome! The chips and salsa were good, pretty simple and authentic. The tamales were pretty good, a little dry, but the tomatillo sauce was really good! I definitely recommend this place!
Marty
For a place that boasts about Authentic Mexican cuisine, it is very hard to understand why the chef would allow a the salsa served with chips to taste like Ketchup. The chef is either in experienced or should not call himself a chef. The service was slow and the air conditoning was colder than the frozen Margariitas. Nope, I too don't understand the hype.
Lara
Don't understand the hype. Maybe i was in on a bad lunch day but following the high percentage of "likes' i decided to check this place out
Wow what a disappointment.
the margaritas were watered down limeade
the fajitas are better at taco cabana
the enchiladas were just bland and smothered in tons of cheese...
i love mexican food. more specifically tex mex but this place just didn't deliver... sorry
Andrea Caudle
Grilled chicken. Had the grilled chicken with vegetables off the lunch menu and it was wonderful.
Highly recommended.
Clevers-peavers
Yes sir!!!!. Great Mexican, easy to get to location, tasty chips, and the chipotle wine sauce, WOW! Pork tacos today with the sauce were out of this world. I will be back.

Also concur: Best Mexican in Dallas!. I love this place! I can not say enough about their food. The salsa is just the right amount of spicey and there queso dip with ground beef is AMAZING!!!! The tamales are very tasty and sometimes they run out of them on Sundays (that is how good they are!). The carnitas are also good and they are very accomadating to special orders. My husband is a very picky eater and us able to order customer made dishes without any of the veggies, just like he wants it! Dessert is also a must have! Can't say enough of this place.
J.D. Hill
Concur: Best in Dallas. Just to add to what the other reviewer said... The enchiladas they mentioned are Pepe & Mito's chipotle enchiladas, and they are every bit as good as the other guy said. They come in both chicken and cheese, I usually get one of each (on the dinner menu you get 3, so 2 chicken / 1 cheese). Also, they're not on the menu, but you can get chorizo nachos, which are THE BEST!!
Vroom
Best in Dallas!!. You know...there is a Mexican restaurant on every corner in Dallas. But, this place does it the best!! They put a great twist on Mexican food that would normally be repetitive. I can't remember the name of the enchiladas that I had last time I was there, but the sauce had some kind of balsamic vinegar in it, and it was TO DIE FOR!! And I even topped it off with a fantabulous (no spelling error here....it's my new word) margarita! Who cares if it was lunch time?!?!?!
Amber
I really love this place. Their hot sauce is one of the best around.
Dallas Food Nerd
Located in Deep Ellum, Pepe’s & Mitos prides itself on being Mex-Tex. You read that right. Mex-Tex, not Tex-Mex. They want their food to be classic Mexican cuisine with a touch of Texas flare versus the alternative. Boy, do they achieve that.
