Review Hyeholde Restaurant - Coraopolis

This was the wife's first time at the Hyeholde, and probably my sixth or more (best if company is paying!). I knew she would like it, but I was waiting for a special occasion, as it's not the cheapest place in town. As we both have our birthdays around the same time we decided to splurge. First, I have to mention the ambience, which is really the main draw. Built in 1930 by a man who promised his wife a castle, when I say built, I mean he hand-built it. It's not really a castle, more like an Arts & Crafts style house with lots of rooms, levels and some castle-like features, like round towers, oak timber trusses, fireplaces and lots of wood. We'd driven by it so I could show her the outside, and she was looking forward to seeing the inside. We started with glasses of wine and appetizers. She had the special, a portion of Mahi Mahi, while I went for the sherry bisque, a Hyeholde staple since 1937. The wife was a bit concerned, as often the starter course fills her up and she can't enjoy the dinner. Not really a problem here, as portions are more continental, not huge American portions. For our main courses, she went for the Elysian Fields rack of lamb, but did substitute mushroom fricasse for the Moroccan lentils (not due to a lentil aversion, to the contrary, she did not think they would be as good as ones she has had in the Middle East). I'm a steak guy, but usually I go for filet mignon, as I prefer very little fat, and I tend to waste a lot on other cuts. I decided to go for the 12oz prime beef strip steak, as the other steak dish, the special, was described as being higher in fat content. For dessert we shared a blood orange tort and the creme brulee. So, the review. I confess I wasted some of the steak, as there was some fat and a portion was too underdone for my tastes. Maybe I should have tried the ostrich, as the server said that was a very lean cut of meat. (They also had elk, but neither of us were experimental enough to try either). The portion size was more than sufficient, as I said they could butterfly it for a more even cook. It covered my whole plate, although as a result it tended to crowd the other items, resulting in a messier appearance. The rack of lamb was very nice, and the portion size more than enough for the wife, who bagged half to bring home. Desserts were very tasty, particularly the blood orange tort, which was the special. Overall it was a very pleasant experience. The food is very good, as is the service, and the atmosphere is unlike any other in the area. That said, be prepared for some sticker shock with the bill. In my opinion, there are other places with equally good food at lower prices, such as Ditka's or Monterrey Bay, but the atmosphere is completely different. That is partly what you're paying for, and if you accept that going in, you won't be disappointed. It's hard to say if Hyeholde is a great value, as much of what you pay for is subjective. How much is the atmosphere worth? Only each person can say for themselves.

Hyeholde provided us a table in the back that was semi private, rustic, and our party of four really enjoyed it. We ordered from a special Valentines menu which was six course, and impeccably served. The food was good, but food the only reason this establishment wasn’t rated a five. I would definitely come here again. The Maitré D did ask us nicely that they had to reseat the table at the end, which was a weird dismount. That said, they were busy. Bottles of wine and dessert was had.

Hidden jewel outside Pittsburgh. The food and service was outstanding!!! Nestled in the woods, that will remind you of a country setting in Europe.

Beautiful venue for a wedding! The food was delicious and the place is really well maintained. They have options for valet parking. The outside is really pretty and there are a lot of picturesque area!

I have eaten at Hyeholde Restaurant a couple of times in the past several years. Previously, I ate inside the main dining room. During my most recent visit, I ate outside on a blanket for a private picnic with my husband. The food tasted delicious, and we greatly enjoyed the castle-like atmosphere. The employees' service was very professional.

My husband and I HIGHLY recommend to dine at the Hyeholde. We got married there 8 years ago and every time we go back the food just keeps getting better and better. The service is top notch. The location is beautiful. And grounds of the Hyeholde are so serene and relaxing. Each year we go we always say “this is the best food we have ever had.” If you like history this is the place to go. The Hyeholde is a must for the Pittsburgh area. We actually drive over an hour just to get there. Please go and enjoy the entire experience! You’ll be SO GLAD you did!!!!

We had our wedding reception here. The location is gorgeous! Both the grounds and the building are breathtaking. You would never know it was so close to the airport. Everyone we interacted with there was professional and friendly. Highly recommend for an event or a nice dinner out. Can I give it six stars??

Excellent dining experience! The lamb and the elk were amazing, as was everything else. Our server, Alex, was great and served us an amazing anniversary dinner.

Valentine's dinner. What a fantastic experience. The service was impeccable without being overdone. Hector was great! A set menu for Valentine's Day. We both had the scallops appetizer which was incredible. I ordered the lobster. It was great. Possibly the best lobster I've eaten. My husband had the filet. He enjoyed it as well. Salads, desserts very good as well. Definitely a great special occasion place. The building itself is an experience. Don't skip going to the bar. It is in another building a few steps away.

Very good but portions are not as large as the price. This is a special occasion beautiful pricy place. Been there several times with different people and can't say anyone ever left anything on their plate. The food is good but the portions are not as large as the ambiance.

We had a delicious dinner last night. There were 3 of us. We were seated at the best table in the house which was right in front of the fireplace. It was warm and cozy. My daughter and I had the filet and it was tender and delicious with the Demi glacé. My husband had the trout. He loved how it was prepared. Our desserts were unique and not the typical desserts which you see everywhere you go. They have a female pastry chef and the desserts were wonderful. Our server was attentive and pleasant. It had been a few years since we had been here but now we will be back soon. It was excellent. I highly recommend it.

An Enchanted Evening at the Hyeholde. If you're the type who enjoys a unique dining experience & appreciates service & ambiance as much as the food itself you should make a night of it at Hyeholde. The location is odd as you first drive through a business park, then enter a suburban neighborhood but once you head up the driveway you're welcomed by a charming old house. Inside, its broken into several candle lit rooms & upon making a reservation they are careful to put you in the appropriate room (i.e. small & intimate for dates or larger room w/ high ceilings for groups.)

While waiting for our party they took us out back to an adorable patio w/ a brick fireplace for drinks. They don't have a bar but a server is assigned to you for the night so the same waitress helped us the entire time. She was great & added to the evening w/ a jovial personality & helpful knowledge of the menu.

For dinner, I started w/ a delicious pear salad picked fresh from their own grounds. I got daring & ordered the Elk medium rare. I enjoyed it & would recommend for anyone who wants to try elk but I don't need it again. Although, my favorite part was the potato casserole looking thing it came with. I also tried by neighbor's Dover Sole which was absolutely delicious.

Dessert I had some sort of chocolately cheese cake but had envy over those who ordered the Chocolate Bread Pudding. It was insanely decadent w/ the perfect bread pudding consistency.

Overall, if I'm rating food alone it wasn't at the top, top of my list but the outstanding service & atmosphere is worth it alone. I definitely want to go back!

Elegant and relzxing evening. My husband and I were given a gift certificate to the Hyeholde, and spent a wonderful evening there this past weekend. The one-hour drive was well worth it as we drove up to the secluded little castle in the trees. We were seated in the Garden Room with three walls of windows, and had a view of the outside patio and roaring fire. The wait staff was extremely attentive, and even the valet parking attendant gave us menu suggestions when he learned that this was our first visit. We both ordered the roasted wild mushroom salad and prime filet and they were excellent, as were the accompanying boursin potatoes and french green beans. I selected the creme brulee for dessert, and my husband chose the chocolate cake with a crunchy peanut layer and caramel sauce. I loved mine, but he wasn't too impressed with his, which turned out to be more of a stacked torte than a cake (and the sauce turned out to be chocolate instead of caramel). Otherwise, everything was perfect, and we will certainly recommend this restaurant to anyone who is celebrating a special occasion.

Fantastic Special Occasion Meal! My husband and I tried Hyeholde for the first time this weekend and had a wonderfully romantic and delicious meal. This is definitely one of the best restaurants in the Pittsburgh region and has the best ambiance of them all. We were seated in an alcove upstairs over looking the fireplace and main dining room. With separate divining areas throughout the mansion, it helps make the space feel intimate and cozy. We had a delicious meal - carpaccio, steak, lobster - all prepared perfectly! We will definitely be returning to Hyeholde!

Fantastic .... My wife and I enjoyed a wonderful meal here the weekend following Valentine's day. My Filet was perfectly cooked and so tender I didn't need a steak knife. My wife enjoyed a lobster and pasta dish with a creamy fennel sauce that was perfectly spiced. The service was friendly and helpful, particularly with my beer selection as I am extremely finicky in that department. The charming decor and atmosphere are reminiscent of a medieval French country village or Lord's great room. Hyeholde is a great place for a special occasion meal.

Nice special occasion restaurant, interesting game items to chose.

Had an excellent experience at the hyeholde recently. Firstly the place is architecturally pleasing and extremely unique. Its literally an old castle with warm quaint dining rooms. It’s a bit like being stuck in a Chaucer tale. The motif is somewhere in between Canterbury Tales and Shakespearian era. The building is surrounded by beautiful well-kept grounds on a hill. They have their own gardens for herbs, fruits and vegetables and according to our waiter they even produce their own honey.
The food was very good. We all had something different and everyone in our party was pleased. We all had three courses and a nice, well priced bottle of wine. From the bread, “scratch-homemade”, and olive spread all the way through the apps, salads and entrees, each part was as good if not better than the next. We were very pleased with the food. Not cheap, but delicious and the quality and the taste support the price.
The service was very professional and our waiter Vincent added much to the experience. He was polite friendly and was knowledgeable about the menu, recipes and offered some key suggestions that were well received and eventually much appreciated. He crumbed our table and gave us new cutlery at each interval during the evening.
In short, wonderful establishment. They are doing all things well, and the important thing to enunciate here is they have a property that is beautiful and unique. Its tucked away, but worth the trip. Very near the airport. If you’re even considering going, Go!

Hidden Gem. This place is truly a hidden gem in Pittsburgh. I call it that because 9 out of 10 people that I ask about it have never heard of it. The setting is spectacular, the food is excellent. I can't wait to go back and try a picnic basket or tea.

Wedding Bliss!. We got married here July 2009 in the front garden. It was whimsical, magical, and a green wonderland! Debussy's Clair de Lune on the harp in the garden, guests seated on the lawn, bubbles everywhere, gorgeous fragrant flowers in bloom. We went with a very simple intimate, vintage wedding. The staff and event coordinator were miracle workers, accommodating our unconventional little wedding. We had people from the far reaches of the globe come and they all agreed…amazing ambience, delectable foods (elk, duck, asparagus, field greens, sorbets, champagne…) everything was so beautiful and the most memorable day of our lives!
We have gone back every year since! And will continue to do so as long as we can!

Valentine's Night. I was at the Hyeholde 100 years ago or so, and I remembered it as a really special place. It is still a really special place. It is EXTREMELY expensive, and I believe you pay for the food AND the atmosphere. For Valentine's evening, it was a prefixed menu, although we had several choices for each course. It was hard not to laugh, though, when the first course of soup came out in teeny-tiny espresso cups......I mean, if you're not going to do it......well, just don't. My beau had the Sherry Bisque, which they are known for, and it was quite delicious. He had one sip, I had the other. I had the 5-onion soup, and I decided to get the last of the 2-sip soup out with a fork. It was yummy for sure. The star of the night for me was a braised or roasted vegetable melange (sp?) in a vinaigrette of some sort-it was heavenly. My beau had the scallop. For entrees, my man had a perfect cut of beef tenderloin, perfectly cooked and delicious. I had duck-prosciutto wrapped chicken with brussels sprouts and sage gnocci. HEAVEN. (I didn't eat the duck-prosciutto because I am a wimp) I ordered dessert only because it came with the menu, and boy am I glad I did. Chocolate obsession sampler that was exquisite, and my beau had chocolate mousse I think. I so appreciate the "foodie" experience that the Hyeholde offers, complete with sorbet to cleanse the palate, and it is certainly a romantic place to go. But with a tab at $200, including one glass of wine and the tip, we really can't go more than once a year. I love good food, but the price makes it inaccessible. Bummer.

Tradition. I love the Hyehold and all it has to offer. We go there every Christmas eve, and the ambiance is worth noting. The food and service have always been exceptional. My only gripe is a severe lack of "tables for two." Even after making reservations for a "table for two," my date and I are still seated at a 4 person table...which makes for awkward 90 degree seating. Despite this hiccup, The Hyehold is a wonderfully special occasion I look forward to each year.

Pittsburgh Magazine. In Moon Township, the extensive grounds at the Hyeholde provide plenty of growing space for spinach, carrots, radishes, raspberries, strawberries and more, which contribute to the French-inspired food. Additionally, the restaurant's apiary yields 25 pounds of honey per year. 1516 Coraopolis Heights Road, Moon Township; 412/264-3116, hyeholde.com

Fantastic, must eat at restaurant in Pittsburgh. The food is impeccable -- I had pan seared wild mushrooms as an appetizer, Elk steak (never had elk before) and the creme brulee. My wife had a soup, the Pork Tenderloin and the chocolate malt cake. Everything was outstanding, with great service to go with it.

As for atmosphere, this place exudes romance. THE place in Pittsburgh for an Anniversary, Birthday or just if you're looking to impress that special someone. Very historic -- it's much like a small castle, surrounded by gardens. Be warned that the ambiance does come with a price as there is a recommended dress code -- business casual and male diners should be wearing a minimum of jacket/sport coat.

Just had dinner here for the first time last evening. One of the most interesting places to dine in Pittaburgh. As for the food, our meal was excellent. We started with the ostrich carpaccio, then the sherry bisque, which were both excellent. My husband ordered the elk, while I had the prime rib, both medium rare and delicious. For dessert, the Ginger rum cake was rather dry, bit the raspberry bread pudding was fantastic. The only thing lacking was the service, which at times was very slow. They almost seemed understaffed, but I will still go back for the food and atmosphere!

Exceptional wedding receptions. I had my daughter's wedding reception here in August. Between the beautiful grounds, professional staff, and delicious food, it was a day our family will always remember with pleasure. People came up to me all night long and told me it was the best food they had ever had at a wedding. One of my friends said she was going to insist her daughter have her wedding reception at the Hyehold also. And I was pleasantly surprised to get a bill that was quite reasonable. Do not hesitate to book an event here!

Very pricey but worth it. VERY PRICEY but worth it for a special dinner. My husband and I ate and had 2 drinks each and our bill, including tip came to $165. The food was exceptional!!! The service was top notch, the atmosphere was beautiful (right before halloween and the place was decorated with beautiful fall harvest leaves, pumpkins, etc). The music was a joke between the two of use during dinner. Their attempt to add sophistication with classical music was a cute--looped a CD in the back ground with all the steriotypical classical music 101 you have heard 1,000 times before. I had the chicken, squash soup and my husband had a salad and the lump crab cakes and both were AMAZING! The food was some of the best I have ever had.

Fabulous creative food and a great atmosphere. We went there with out of town guests and our elementary and middle school kids. They were captivated by the tapestries and armor. The waitress offered to take them to see the kitchen and our whole table also wanted to meet the chefs. What fun! There was a hybrid watermelon cucumber that they grew in the garden, which my daughter stills raves about. We really want to reserve the kitchen table some time.

Don't expect to be served like royalty. Just because the restaurant looks like a castle doesn't mean you should expect to get the royal treatment at this quaint little restaurant out by the airport. Hands down they probably have some of the better appetizers one could have in the Pittsburgh metro area. The country fried quail and beef carpacio were as delicious as they were artfully presented and were priced appropriately. Now as far as the main courses go, the chicken dish at $26 was just a tiny breast with no sausage to found (usually when something is in the description you expect to see it on the plate) and the $31 duck confit entree was the most expensive appetizer that I have had in the Pittsburgh area and if not priced so high with so little to eat maybe criticism could have been avoided. Some service pitfalls to be noted. Table crumbing seems to only happen by chance and from only certain staff. Secondly, when a server notices the other person in your party is not at the table she should not immediately return with the entrees until the other person returns to the table. As for the chef there, don't expect him to rember you. Even after having a wedding there, running into him on numerous occasions and conversing with him there always seems to be a dazed look in his eye. Maybe he is dazed over the high prices and poor service?

Great food. The atmosphere is like a small castle. I even got married here. They were phenomenal with the event!

The seven course Chef’s Tasting is not on the menu, but since we did it once before we asked our server if we all could order it. Dave and I supplemented our meal with wine pairings (additional charge). For the more adventurous foodies, Hyeholde also offers a Chef’s Table – that’s IN the kitchen! Our server asks if there’s any allergies, or if there’s anything specifically we’d like and heads back to the kitchen to inform the chef. No allergies for our party, and we give the chef free reign to delight us with whatever he chooses!

The food and service were top notch as expected from such a highly regarded establishment and the prices were surprisingly much more reasonable than other upscale restaurants. Hyeholde doesn’t deliver an overtly fun experience, but then again neither does watching “The Shawshank Redemption”. Both are exceptional from begi

Last Friday afternoon, L and I went to Hyeholde in Moon Township for our usual birthday tea celebration - this time, for my birthday. Yes, my birthday was in November. We never manage to have our birthday tea celebrations near the actual birthday! Afternoon tea at Hyeholde is something that L and I enjoy twice a year, so I've blogged about it several times before. It's such a beautiful place with a lovely afternoon tea and the food is different every time, so I like to blog about it every time we go. This time, we were seated next to a window to the right of the fireplace with a view of the snow coating the trees and shrubs. Usually, we are seated right in front of the fireplace. This was a nice change. I had a different view of the restaurant and I tried to take a few photos. These are a little blurry/dark because the interior of Hyeholde is dark/dim. You can just make out the fire in the fireplace in the photo below; it's partially hidden by the chair. The story of Hyeholde is a love

Nestled off the beaten path in Moon Township, there’s an exceptional place to eat- The Hyeholde Restaurant. What makes this such an extraordinary place to dine (besides the food) is the atmosphere. Hyeholde has been around since 1938, and has a rich and c
