Review Bulldog Ale House - Chicago

Kevin Hill
It was a beautiful spring day, so we decided to have lunch on the patio with a choice that did not disappoint. We started off with Loaded Waffle Fries which were delicious 😋 The roast beef on the French Dip sandwich was excellent, very tender & flavorful & the au jus has a wonderful accent flavor. The Monte Cristo was more than enough to eat & was fried to perfection. The raspberry preserves were a delightful accent & really brought all the flavors together, providing some sweet & salty delight. The service was good, but not great. It started out well, but as the patio became busier, the service became a little scarce. It is something that with a little more attention to detail is easily fixed by the shift manager. There were also a number of specials on the menu to fit anyone's taste for the day.

Could eat here every day for a week, easy. Staff is great. Liz paid excellent attention to us. Food was…well…just look at the pics lol. Easy to get to. Perfect for outdoor dining.

Nice outdoor patio, very attentive friendly service. There seemed to be a pretty decent selection on the menu, though it was quite pricey. I would instead suggest the daily specials as those were such a good deal. Also they have a happy hour from 4-6 pm, which also has good deals.

I met up with some friends and sat at the bar. The place was fairly lit with a pretty good diverse customer base. Lots of college students and young professionals which made the environment fun and exciting. We ordered a couple of beers, and I ended up having a 10oz Guinness. The beers were pretty reasonably priced. We wanted to get some food so we ordered the chicken nachos. They had run out of chicken but the bartender reassured us we could have the nachos made with pork which were pretty excellent!

Second time I've been here and both times were great. My wife had the chicken and waffles and I had the MA Burger. Everything came out perfect and delicious. Waitress checked on us multiple times, but not intrusive. Highly recommend

Had lunch there with a friend who works at Loyola. Not very welcoming as you approach the entrance. Looked closed from the outside. Perhaps some lights in the windows would help. Inside, looks like a standard brewpub. Lots of TVs, huge beer selection on tap. Server was friendly, but she seemed a little inexperienced and was also covering reception which explains some of the slowness we saw (not her fault). Menu is on a barcode, but the low lighting makes it tougher to get to the link. When I asked about sides, they brought out a physical menu. I ordered a burger with fries. Both were delicious. There are quite a few other options on the menu including pizzas, tacos, wings, soups, salads and sandwiches. They also have some specialty items like chicken pot pie and chicken and waffles. Good option if you're in the mood for comfort food and are in Roger's Park.

Good atmosphere and good food. We had the chicken nachos, mac n cheese burger, and the M.A. burger. The mac n cheese burger was super messy and huge so it was difficult to eat and the actual mac didn’t have a lot of flavor.

I have been delaying writing a review because I feel like it’s unfair to rate a place over an egg. I ordered a sandwich and instead of separating the hard boiled egg throughout the sandwich they left it whole right in the middle. (See photo) We sat outside in perfect weather. The service was good. I just wasn’t ready to bite into a whole hard boiled egg. So, definitely visit this restaurant. Just order something different than what I did! My son is a Loyola student and says this place is amazing. I am sure most days it absolutely is.

Had a fun experience here. We ordered some beer. They have a decent selection on tap. We also ordered the jalapeño poppers at the recommendation of our server. They were awesome but beware they are super spicy. The bbq sandwich with coleslaw on it was delicious. I swapped the fries for a side salad which was quite substantial and fresh. Fun outdoor patio out front. There are a lot of TVs inside FYI. Everything was great but the place can be a little pricey. Nonetheless we would recommend this place.

Great selection of drinks, high quality bar food, and outdoor patio seating -- what's there not to like? I would absolutely recommend this place to others. Just note: this is a popular hangout spot for Loyola students, so just be aware of the younger clientele that goes here.

Visited many times. Only positive emotions. Friendly atmosphere and wonderful service. Bartender Elena acted like an old friend of us. Being busy and running as a crazy dog she paid us enough attention. What about kitchen - they did their best. I was surprised how many burgers they have in their menu. I ordered jalapeño peppers with a cheese and almost burned my head. That was freaking hot. A burger I ordered was cooked well done instead of medium well but it was not a big deal. My respect and appreciation to chief it was delicious anyways. I definitely recommend to visit this place!

This review is for the Loyola location. Checking out another place for lunch with my daughter after getting our hair done. Last week was bopNGrill, which is next door. Nice location if you happen to live in the area. Bulldog is a sports bar, which is event from the number of TVs in there. If you are not into sports, there are high top tables and booths up front away from the action. There is also a nice outdoor seating area if you want to eat outside. My daughter and I commented on the fact that the place was pretty quiet for a Saturday afternoon, which was nice for us. But we wondered what it would be like once Loyola is in session. I like that they offer the various specials during the week. Because it was Saturday, they had a $5 23 oz draft beer and Absolut mixers, which isn't bad. They also have an E-Club where you can get a free entree each week. We started with the loaded waffle fries and the mac/cheese bites. Load waffles fries were good but could use more cheese and onions...next time I will ask for extra. Fries had a nice seasoning to them. The mac/cheese bites were not bites but four good size triangles. They were okay, nothing to write home about, but good. They came with a chipotle ketchup. For entrees, I got the Goat Cheese and Pear burger and my daughter got the Mac & Cheese with Andouille sausage. Both were excellent. For the burger, the blending of the goat cheese and pears was a lovely touch. The pears had been sauteed and placed on top of the burger. The only way this could have been better was if the burger had been lamb. I got a side of coleslaw instead of fries as I had left over waffle fries. Cole slaw was just standard, but good. Cabbage was nice and crunchy and was in a mayo base. The Mac & Cheese was very creamy and flavorful. The addition of the sausage was great. This dish came with cheese bread as well, but again I am always thinking outside the box...this dish would kill with a side of corn muffins or biscuits (just a suggestion Bulldog). They brought the dish out in a bowl and had a second bowl underneath to prevent touching a hot dish, which I thought was nice. The same was done for the loaded fries. The service was good. Don't remember our server's name, but he was Albania. We had a nice discussion about goat and feta cheese, roasting a whole goat or lamb over a spit, my recipe for baked goat cheese with marina, etc. For those that like to split the bill, they do all the leg work for you. Since there was two of us, they calculated the bill based on that. So for folks that don't like doing the math, they do it for you. They have a nice selection of draft/bottle beers and some decent wines. The specials offered during the week also look promising. Since this place is off of the Red Line, I could see myself coming back here for a nosh. Oh before I forget, I saw the $3 mimosas on Sundays...score!

Great daily drink/food specials. Good place to grab a quick bite to eat or spend some time drinking at the bar. Nice servers. Always have the best selection of drinks from cocktails to cider to stouts.
