Review Green Mill - Chicago

Lyn Harvie
I’ve lived in Chicago for 12 years and I just went here for the first time. It was amazing. Get there early for seating. They don’t serve food but they allow you to order in. Easy street parking.

Historic, iconic, fun! If the walls could talk. It’s a step back in time to visit the Green Mill. The live music is fabulous. The dance floor small and packed. Get there early if you want a seat. Cover charge Thursday night. Drinks not great. Glad to have had this experience! Highly recommend!

Outstanding venue. I was only in Chicago for 3 days but I did my research and knew as a live music lover I had to check it out. The vibe was exactly what I expected. I had a barstool next to where one of the servers was getting drinks from the bartender and we became buds (thanks, Sarah!). I told her where I was going next and she knew the bartender and wrote me a note to take to him so he would take care of me and he did. The bartender here was also very good. Great drinks! Music was fantastic and made me think I was in an episode of Boardwalk Empire.

INCREDIBLE VENUE. Musicians on Sunday night were absolutely incredible. The entire place is a blast from the past. Bar staff not rude, but just busy. Cash-only but they do have an ATM. My suggestion, go on a Sunday when they put the musicians behind the bar instead of the regular stage.

It’s been said that Al Capone spent more time in this bar than even his own place. I can’t speak for the entertainment featured back then, but the big band orchestra that performed the night my wife and I were there had us dancing until the midnight hour. The bartender took very good care of us and made exceptional martinis that seemed to get better with each additional order. It was the best night we had in a long time.

We loved the music, atmosphere and Caroline who was our waitress was superb. It could have been a perfect evening out if it wasn’t for a bartender by the name of Jason Cole. We had friends from overseas and he was so very rude and unpleasant to them on two separate occasions. We would love to go back as long as he wasn’t working that night. Great place to visit and enjoy jazz.

Green Mill was my first Jazz club experience and I will definitely be back! $15 cover and drinks are about $10 each which isn’t bad! Music was great but it was a bit crowded (it was Friday night). They made me the best amaretto sour!

Our server was a little bit too grabby on the drinks. My son and I had old-fashions which really did not taste. Good at all. Poorly made, or poor whiskey. Our server kept trying to take her drinks when we weren't finished lol. Nice try honey..... The ambiance was good. And the music was exceptional. A good time was had by my wife, son and I. This is said to have been Al Capone's speakeasy. Cover charge was $20 per person. Then drinks on top of that. Ran us about $110 beyond cover charge.

Unbelievable!! A throw back into another era. My favorite jazz venue in the world!! The lighting is amazing.

The place is very small because you need to do a row and wait, when there's a show they charge 15 bucks at the time of entering and then quickly search for chairs because there's no ha ha and enjoy the show the drinks are normal nothing woah and the bathroom is in the back. Pd: Don’t forget your Id.

Lovely venue, beautifully decorated, great performers. Unfortunately, the male staff behind the bar was quite rude but the female table staff went above and beyond. No food here.

If you love Jazz this is the place to be. Just make sure you don't go there when you're hungry because they don't serve food. Plus it's cash only!

This place is cash only (cover, drinks, etc) There's an automatic $20 CASH cover. If you get in early and get seats, you're lucky. If you come later, you end up paying $20 to stand there. Otherwise, it's a great place for jazz! I wouldn't take new dates here bc it's not really a "talk while they play the songs" environment.

This place never disappoints, good selection of drinks and great bands playing live. They could probably up the service and accept cards at some point. But love every time I come it’s just a great experience for music lovers.

A wonderful place to experience live music in Chicago! Full of history, charm, and character, it has been open for over a century and was once frequented by Al Capone. We’ve been here to see jazz, which was lovely, and a comedy show featuring local comedian and puppet influencer Chad the Bird, where he gave a moving eulogy for Tina Turner. It’s cash only, so remember to come prepared!

Great historical spot for live music. Went on a Tuesday night and it was busy, so if you want a decent seat go early! Also the staff were all very friendly but there was only one person running drink orders and it made the wait times for a drink insane.

This place is absolutely fantastic! The music was hot, the drinks were cold (and strong!). Don't forget your cash, but there is an ATM in the front in the worst case. Quite a few people were dressed in vintage clothes to come listen to the band. It was a lot of fun.

At the risk of getting more people there, I still have to say… Thursday nights at the Mill are where it’s at!! Alan Gresik found a ton of scores from when big bands still had to go to radio stations to broadcast, and so every Thursday night here they put on a 1940s-style radio show. It even includes singing commercials! This place is a step back to the 20s in all the right ways. Can’t recommend it enough!

I believe the article in the Chicago Trib said "the best Jazz bar in the Universe" and I agree. This place has character, energy and it's one of the best kept secrets of the area. It's about music, so expect to pay cover as the money is for artists and feel good about that as the music is great! If you can, sign the book. The bartender depending on how busy they are will show you names dating back to prohibition when Capone's henchmen used to visit/own the place. The neighborhood still has a bit of a rough feel but If you like Jazz, this is where it happens late nights on the uptown Chicago scene.

Bougie. Touristie. Rude bouncer. Snobby “manager”. Just ridiculous. I used to LOVE this place...but alas. The music though was amazing. So great. My martini also great...they can change some staff...mainly those at the door and those “managing”. The bartender and waitress were great.

My personal favorite gin joint on this entire rock, the place is legendary for all kinds of reasons. The staff are a bunch of sweethearts especially that hot can of applesauce Patrick, he really gets me sweaty when he does the lovers hotline bit. Thanks for being there Green mill, I couldn't have defiled myself in style w out you.

We just left the place, a few minutes ago. The band was perfect, beautiful and full of energetic music. The waitress was very eficient and kind. But the bartender with big beard and the man who seem to be the owner were completely rude with us. When we asked for a menu of drinks, he said that the menu was only for beer and they would do any cocktail (with an ugly face, as he was doing is a favor). We asked for a drink. He said they don't have that one. So, we asked for a beer. With that "i'm doing a favor get out of here" face, he brought the beer. Some minutes after, I was trying to understand say to my friend to ask for another beer, as he was closer to the bar. We know that it's a place where it's required not to talk loud, so we were talking calmly about the beer order and, in this exact moment, came the nan who seem to be the owner, making that gesture as he were cuting his throat (saying to stop talking). We stopped and I called the waitres, to ask for a beer, and not to talk to the people on the bar. So, if they don't want noise, why they put much more people than the place can handle? It was impossible to walk to the bathroom without hiting someone during the way to there, for example. There were too many people! A minimum of talking is necessary - to talk something, to ask for a drink, or even when the bartender let a plate fall and break inside the bar, as happened some minutes after. If you want silence, start not putting much more people than you can handle, and don't transfer you lack of organization on the people who goes there for the first time, in a city where many different people goes to visit. One more thing: other people were talking louder than our low volume voices, and taking pictures with flash. They didn't say anything to those people.

Have an awesome time. Great place to kick back, enjoy the crowd and good service. Poetry Slam was so fun to listen to.

This. is. the. place. I have been a patron for over 20 years. There's nothing like it! From Al Capone's favorite booth to live jazz until 4-5 in the morning. My favorite was Kurt Elling doing his thing as a Wednesday night regular. =)

No brainer, Only place in Chicago where you can see a Grammy-winning jazz vocalist......and they have a whacking good bar staff. Best dirty martinis.

Dear Green Mill, You used to be my absolutely favorite place for a great jazz. I hope I can get back that feeling one day. However, on Thursday I brought my friends from far away to listen to great music but it was impossible! We were standing so close to the stage and still could hardly hear the music... Why on all other days there is a "no talking" rule but on Thursday the place becomes a high school discotheque where music is secondary?

What a great venue for live music. They respect the musicians - this is a place for them! Great cocktail waitresses - shout out to Amy! Dave runs a good place. 😊

We went on a Thursday night. I highly recommend it to anyone In Chicago looking for a unique place to visit.

This place has been magic longer than I’ve been alive and is guaranteed for a night of great classic jazz😁

Love the music and decor but I’ve been here a few times and each time people begging or harassing you for money right outside of the place. Woman should go in a group there.

I enjoyed spending my birthday at this beautiful unique jazz club in Chicago. My girlfriend and I got Ethiopian from across the street for a pre- show meal and then watched the incredible Alfonso Ponticelli band While sipping dragon's stout and gin martinis! This is one of the best places to see live music in the United States

Great room for live jazz. Saw Kurt Elling there on Sat. (8/12) and it was packed, SRO. Friendly staff and the patrons, there to appreciate the music and the artist, were respectful.
