Review Toyama Express Japanese Restaurant - Charlotte

LOVE TOYAMAS! I have been eating here since I moved in 2008. It is now 45 minutes away and we monthly make the drive up for Toyama’s. It has been the exact same delicious quality! I look forward to eating here and will always be coming back!!

One of my favorite hibachi restaurants in Charlotte. Always fast friendly service and the food is great! Competitive prices too! I really enjoy the hibachi shrimp and chicken.

This place is amazinnnnng! Best food ive had in the university area. They give you a ton and I am always able to make two big meals out of it. They have the best shrimp sauce too. I buy it for when I make hibachi at home. I go once a week and usually get the steak and chicken habachi combo with fried rice, zucchini and onion and sweet carrots. I loveee the sweet carrots. Soo good. Highly recommended. Update 3/13/18 I continue to go here at least once a week to get my hibachi fix. I loveee their food and the prices are hard to beat for the quanity & quality. I have read a ton of negative reviews on here about the staff being unfriendly and I decided to address that. The last half a dozen times or so I've gone in I have focused in on how they treated me as well as the other customers ordering and waiting while I was there. I must say I am lost and confused on why people say they arent friendly. Having worked in the food service business for many years I understand the stress and crazyness of the environment. They are ALWAYS packed and the place is a madhouse. People need to keep that in mind when they go here. Give them the benefit of the doubt that sometimes people become stressed out and may not be as friendly as someone who sits on their ass all day making 5x the hourly rate. The staff here do a great job and imo treat the customers well. The food however is fantastic. 5/8/18 Still go here weekly and still great!

The lady at the register was sweet and adorable. The restaurant was clean and well put together. I ordered the steak and chicken with fried rice and carrots. The food came out fast, was a decent portion for $14, and was nice and hot. But lacked flavor. All I tasted was a lot of butter.. in everything. Great atmosphere though

Simple, tasty, affordable, and quick when you place an order! They have it figured out and they do it well. Go to order is beef and broccoli hibachi noodles hold the mushrooms!

Tried for the first time today. Terriaki chicken plate was good portion, good flavor, fair prices. Will come again. Sat outside on there tables and eat very comfortably

My fiancé lives in Ohio and every time she comes to CLT, she asks if we can go to Toyama even though it's a 40 minute drive from Indian Trail.

I had Hibachi chicken (closest) and the M had teriyaki chicken. Both were delicious. It’s our first visit here and everything was clean and inviting, including the restrooms. I’m glad I found this quaint express Japanese restaurant. We will be back.

Tonight my husband and I took an out of town friend, Sam, to the Arbors Dr. location and had the most bizarre experience... Sam's order was brought out to her with a side of spring rolls, and without the carrots that usually accompany it. The restaurant was fairly busy and there was a line, so we shrugged it off, and ate one of the spring rolls. About fifteen minutes later, a server came out and berated us for not returning the spring rolls to the kitchen. Sam explained that she hadn't been there before and didn't know the spring rolls weren't included with her meal; the server repeatedly insisted that we pay for the spring rolls she hadn't ordered. We refused. The server then snatched up the remaining spring roll (with a bite missing) and stormed off. But she wasn't done with us yet! The same server returned soon after to continue bullying Sam to pay for the spring rolls. Again Sam refused and asked to speak to a manager (conveniently not in tonight.) The server scolded that because of our "dishonesty," another angry customer inside had not received their order. Choosing not to comment on the fact that we were not responsible for the kitchen correctly filling other customers' orders, I reminded the server that even if Sam returned the spring rolls, it would not have been food safe for them to serve the food she had touched to someone else. To the amusement of the other diners around us, the server continued to argue her point, ending by saying that "next time" we should do the honest thing and return the food that had been mistakenly brought to us. There won't be a next time after the incredibly strange, rude way we were treated. It's a shame; we like the food and have gone to Toyama fairly often -- but there are plenty of other restaurants in town that will not harass their customers for a mistake made by the kitchen. P.S. Two spring rolls cost $2.60.

This place used to be good. Recently had dinner there with my son. I ordered teriyaki steak with broccoli. Half of the meat was RAW!! I couldn't eat that much more give that to my toddler. So I checked every single one of the meat. I told the waitress about my raw food and she told the cook in the back. Terrible customer service. Didn't apologize, give refund or give us cooked meat. Disappointed!! Won't come back....

I would have given 5 stars but my wife said her meal was too salty. Mine was fine so 4 stars it is. Service was good.

Very disappointed with this place today. I get food from here all the time but customer service going out the door. I just called and the guy puts me on hold, he thought he did because he didn't" this employee put me on hold and started talking about the football game for four minutes and didn't even take my order. I got tired of waiting so I hung up and called back SEVEN times and no one takes my call. Not giving my money no more to this place. Food is good but treat your customers better because rumors go around

I have eaten at Toyama more times than I can remember! I would estimate easily over 50 times. The food is always fast and good. Occasionally a coworker's order or two has gotten screwed up in our extra large office lunch orders, but the owners have always made it right if we called and told them. They have the cheapest salmon entree anywhere! I would request it medium rare to avoid the possibility of getting an over cooked piece of salmon. It only happened to me once or twice. Typically it does come out perfect. I do wish they had a side of lo mein noodles for my picky toddler. I end up ordering the vegetable noodles with a side of rice so he can get what he wants. All in all, Toyama is the best quick service Japanese place I have found in the University/Concord area. They will customize just about any order. Just ask :)

Actually surprised at how poor the service was today. My order came out completely wrong and took an additional twenty minutes to remedy the situation. The food is good, but I suggest focusing more on your sense of urgency.

One of the best budget hibachi restaurants in Charlotte!

Good inexpensive fast Japanese food. I eat here frequently for lunch and a good place to get a quick bite to eat. You can't beat Teriyaki chicken for $6 and some change.

Review. Service is great and fast. Food taste great but very small portion of chicken especially for the price.

Salt, salty, saltier, saltiest. That about sums it up.

Great Food Good Price. Fast service, good price, good service, no complaints :-)

First visit. First time visit today around 3:30PM. Ordered chicken teriyaki and broccoli, food came out fast. Tasty, but the chicken was somewhat dry. Maybe 3:30PM is a bad time, as you're eating lunch leftovers.

Definitely worth another visit.

I discovered this place on urbanspoon and have been a weekly regular ever since. The food is amazing for the price. Always fast service and courteous staff. A++

Good cheap express Japanese food! Just what it's meant to be. Don't go gear expecting steakhouse Japanese. One of the best express Japanese places I've eaten at
Hungry Chef
Gone downhill. The food used to be hot and always fresh. Now i think this place has gotten sloppy. There chicken has been chewy the last 3 times i went. I no that all thats needed to fix that problem is to remove the membrane in the chicken breast which is not hard at all to do but sure lazyness is to blame. The cooks seem just not to care about how good there food is just how fast and much they can kick out. I would rather wait 20 min for great food then 20 sec for food that only a stoner would enjoy. Carrots are the only thing that have stayed good
Brian
Fantastic Japanese... FAST. I've been here many, many times... for lunch and for dinner, and it is consistantly great food... and so fast, it often arrives at the table before I sit down from filling my drink! Long lines at lunchtime, but it moves FAST. Prices are great, portions are great. Toyama is a guarneteed home-run every time.

Just not that good to me. My husband likes this place sooo much, but I don't see what the big deal is. I hate that orangey saue that they give you for dipping and the rice is bland to me. It's just not a place I crave...ever.
Nani
I order for takeout the delicious Hibachi Chicken and Broccoli with fried rice for $7 and it's enough for 2. A great guilt-free inexpensive meal, fast service.

Fast service, really good food, even better prices...a top choice for a filling but healthier lunch option

This is an easy recommendation for anybody looking for some good hibachi chicken around the university area.
