Delicious! Catfish and leg quarter, greens and potato salad. All off the hook, great seasoning and flavor. Greens especially, like my grandma used to make, for real. I'll probably ask to fry the catfish harder next trip, but it was still delicious.
Z was out server and was great, with honest suggestions and really added to us enjoying our meal.
Great place for a home cooked meal!
Downtown Charlotte Gem!!! Impressive service and food. Delightful atmosphere. The aroma of home-cooked food. The cornbread is enough to visit this place. The egg roll and fried chicken are beyond flavorful. My main dish was the special of the day: Beef ribs with Mac n cheese okra and tomatoes. Tender, great flavor. ❤️♥️
Love this restaurant. Hadn't been in years and it's still the same. Full of soul, good food & good vibes. Music was on point too. Excellent service. Friendly-family oriented atmosphere. Food is also reasonably priced and very filling.
From the moment I walked in the front door and smelled the aromatic of spices in the air, I knew I was in the right place. After seeing Merts featured on the Food Network, I began planning a trip. It did not disappoint. Though, I didn't realize how small it would be, which in this case is not a bad thing. The small space an open kitchen gives it a homey vibe. I ordered the shrimp and grits and the soul rolls.
The soul rolls were a delicious start. Filled with collards, diced chicken, black-eyed peas, and seasoned rice drizzled with spicy honey mustard, it really had my mouth watering. Next up, we were served hot and fresh out of the oven cornbread. It was light, fluffy, and with whipped butter spread. It was hard to stop shoving in my face.
For the main course came the shrimp and grits with a brown gravy. The grits were creamy and expertly cooked. (They could have used some salt and pepper during cooking, but it made little difference. The brown gravy was full of flavor.) I only wish we could have stayed for dessert. I guess I will have to plan another trip for that.
I really enjoyed this small quaint restaurant. The waitress was down to earth and inviting the hostess as well. The good came really quick, and it was tasty. I'm not a fan of diced tomatoes in my collards, but I managed. The fish was fried perfectly, and mom seemed to enjoy her meatloaf. She got 3 pieces. I had the fried fish and shrimp creole, and it did not disappoint. It came with one piece of fish, but it was plenty for me.
Had a new server very friendly. Had not tried the food and being first time a little disappointing when asking what to get. The fried green tomatoes were awesome. Crispy and the remoloude sauce awesome. Cornbread awesome. Fried chicken good, green beans ok. Meat loaf moist we thought avg. Mac and cheese was good. Atmosphere was awesome.
Yummy spot for some southern cooking! Very friendly service and loved the vibe and delicious smells in this restaurant! We popped in for a light lunch, splitting the chicken Po’boy and my husband got a side of collard greens. We also split the coconut cake which was DIVINE!
Mr. Louis, I believe that's his name was amazing. But the food was delicious 😋 My girls and I 1st trip to NC, and it won't be the last because of Merts
I was in Charlotte for The American Legion National Convention and there seemed to be a buzz about Mert's. I couldn't make it over there until the day that I was leaving. It was worth the wait.
I had what I call the "countrified surf and turf", which is a fried catfish filet and fried chicken breast quarter. My sides were green beans and Mac/cheese. All tasted like they were made at home by someone with generations of passed on experience.
The atmosphere was colorful and rustic and added to experience. I knew I was in an authentic space when a wait called out to a customer with the question "did you get your fried green tomatoes yet, baby?".
The food was decent but I really expected to better. Catfish was a bit greasy. The salmon was mushy. The green beans were bland the sampler and the wings were good. Great location to walk to if you are staying at any hotel in the area or just waiting for a show at the spectrum arena.
