Review Al Di La - Charleston

Nick Chiarchiaro
So this brought back a lot of memories of small places in Brooklyn where i grew up... Our food was a great portion, well seasoned, delicious and comforting - as we were looking for italian, it did not disappoint - plus i felt i was in the lower level parlor floor in a brownstone in the heights.... well kinda...we would go back !

My husband and I double dated with my grandparents for Valentine's Day dinner and all of us loved it all! We each ordered something different for meals and shared a couple of appetizers- none of us disappointed with our choices! We tried the canolies for dessert and it was the perfect finish to our meal! The atmosphere was cozy and quiet enough for us to catch up and enjoy each other's company.

This place we picked was on the whim, and was a secondary choice, but honestly should be your first. Food tasted amazing and I'd come back again.

Went last night, service was great. My husband's steak and potatoes were delicious. Thank goodness he is so sweet and lets me eat of his plate even when it is delicious. We cleaned his plate. My eggplant was good. My dirty Hendricks on the rocks was perfect. We enjoyed the atmosphere and were treated so nicely.

Fantastic food! Everything is fresh with robust flavor-although not over powering. Solid wine menu as I like that the choices were thought out and 1000 different options. The atmosphere lends well to a crowd or a more private moment. The staff are very knowledgeable and fun to be around. Been here many times and will definitely be back.

Great place. Gnocchi were the best I ever had, the atmosphere is nice and the waiters are friendly and smooth. Everything on the menu looked good and everything I ordered was. Their marinara was surprisingly good (many Italian places have terrible sauce) and the entire meal felt authentic and tasted wonderful. If you're in Charleston I would highly recommend a stop at Al Di La.

A night to remember!! From the moment I walked into this quaint and inviting restaurant, a warm welcome was on everyone’s face. The atmosphere was perfectly lit for an absolutely DELICIOUS meal! Bob, Al Di La’s owner was so accommodating and friendly from the initial reservation request to the complimentary out of this world tiramisu!!!!!! Al Di La hostess Cymone brought her beautiful smile to the table every so often to say hello and Brandon was so attentive, sweet and kind as he served our table. Enjoyable is an understatement! I cannot wait to return!!! Thank you ALL for making a rare night out so delightful!!! With lots of love, Ashley

Food was delicious. I ordered the meatballs and brussel sprouts (both are appetizers) as my meal. They were amazing. My husband and in-laws enjoyed their meals too. Wine was great. Service was great. Thanks Madison! She was very accommodating and patient! Atmosphere was homey and cozy- has a MCM feel to it. We will put this on our list for yummy Italian!

The food was incredible. I highly suggest going whenever you can. The value for their restaurant week deal made it even better. The only downside to the whole experience was the attitude of the waiter. Yes we were there during restaurant week but that is just an intelligent way of trying out new places. So I could have done without the BS from the waiter.

Rachel was the most amazing server and the food was hands down some of the best Ive eaten in a long time. I will definitely be coming back many many times!! I cannot say enough wonderful things about Al Di La and their customer service. They know how to give 5 Star treatment to their customers.

I get the gnocchi Every time I eat here, maybe I branched out once for a special! It's the BEST gnocchi! Usually the shrimp are tossed in and I've always found the two textures odd together and just eat the shrimp separately. I went last night and they chopped the shrimp in smaller pieces and the texture and flavors were PERFECT together with the shrimp being smaller. I wish I could remember our servers name, he was GREAT! I enjoy Al Di La each and every time I dine here!

Have frequented this great place several times and a few times during restaurant week. Last night's experience was my least favorite unfortunately! We were the first ones in and the service was very slow. The menu was not what was advertised on line. Our server was NOT very attentive. The portions of the Focaccia bread were minimal at best. The desserts were NOT presented in the normal Al Di La manner. We had the Tiramisu and the Gelato which were both served in a less than elegant dish and no garnish! The entrees were delicious but there was no garnish! We will certainly go back as the food and service are generally very good if not great... just wasn't our experience last night! :(

Pretty bad experience. Waited a long time to be greeted by the server. Waited a long time for food. Waited a long time for drinks. Then I was charged $14 for a side of pasta which I had ask for instead of meshed potatoes. Did not to pay for a side of pasta. But they we're charging me for a small entree. So a steak almost cost me almost $46.00 If I had not looked at the check. After talking to the manager (We had to wait for him too) who smells like ciggaret smoke. They correct the price. But not after he argued with me that $14.00 for a side of pasta was rigth. After the gave a $10. 00 credit. Server took my card to pay for the meal. Guess what, he charged me the original amount. Well by then we were at the restaurant 2hrs and 5 minutes. So we waited and waited untill the server brought us the correct cc . Unfortunetly the manager showed up and trashed the server. Which I did not find it appropriate.

Adorable atmosphere and DELICIOUS food. I had the gnocchi and it was wonderful. It has a fine dining concept without being super expensive like similar downtown restaurants. Our server was Daniel and he was great. Will be back (:

It is a sad when the poor service outweighs the quality of the food. We were there for restaurant week when EVERY aspect of an establishment should be en point. Best time of year for a restaurant to shine in Charleston. The food was done well with the exception of my salad having not been dressed at all (bone dry) and to have had 2 small cubes of beets... to be called "Roasted Beet Salad" is a stretch at best. The Gnocchi was divine, truly heavenly and rare for ricotta based gnocchi. My companion's seafood "stew" was exceptional. A hearty grilled flavor of broth while maintaining fresh seafood flavor. Desserts were perfectly sized after heavy meals. However, the gnocchi comes with shrimp which I don't eat. I asked if it could be done without and replaced with mushrooms or a vegetable of the chef's choosing and was coldly told, "it's restaurant week, no substitutions allowed, we were instructed to not even ask". I politely pressed as I was not asking for something that would affect food cost (I have years of restaurant management experience and understand some changes are not feasible) but in fact was saving them money by not having shrimp and asked to speak to a manager, I was told that would not be possible. My jaw dropped. Then our wine came, without a wine bucket which had to be asked for, and no bread while tables around us were being given bread. So finally after 2 requests we were each given a single 3 in slice of bread. Our apps came out, no spoon for date's soup, no pepper on table and no ground pepper offered. After repeated attempts to get ANYONE'S attention to get a spoon and pepper, which were finally brought, the soup was tepid and only then did I realize my salad had but 2 beets and wasn't dressed at all. Rather than continue to wait I ate it anyway. As we dined we noticed the dish of grated parmesean cheese being taken to each table and anxiously awaited our entries and our turn as we both love fresh parm (is there a comparison?). Entrees delievered, again, no spoons, oh nor did I have a salad fork earlier, I had a saucy dish and date's was essentially seafood in a broth, and AGAIN NO PEPPER. My date was eternally ignored but I finally got the owner/manager's attention to the items so hat we could, at the least, have utensils to eat with. He arrived without parm, placed spoons on table and walked away wth pepper. Finally I walked up to him and asked to return the pepper , parm, and if we could please get more bread. He returned, apologized, gave me pepper, gave us each another single slice of bread and said they were running low...it was 7:30...not a good time to be running low on bread, during restaurant week on a saturday, at dinnertime. Parmesean never arrived. We gave up on that. We enjoyed our meals. As our plates were being cleared another server arrived with dessert. It would have been nice to allow to food settle a bit. I had also wanted a prosecco with dessert. I ordered then but it did not arrive until I was done with my tiramisu and it was brought with the check when we had not asked for it. We had planned on coffee and perhaps another prosecco. At point we felt too unwelcome as the table was obviously needed (we had not even been there an hour). We were never once checked on, we were never thanked for joining them, and when I asked that my leftover dinner be packaged I was looked at like I requested a goat head. Extremely miserable service, was worse than poor. If you are going to participate in restaurant week, you better be able to keep up with the big boys. Forgotten utensils, lack of dressing, seasoning, being ignored, and the diner repeatedly needing to request basics, will not result in high marks. Food, 4 of 5 stars. Service, negative 2 stars. After spending nearly $175 i think one can expect a bit more. Extremely disappointed.

From the minute you walk in until the second you leave it feels like home. Attentive service and amazing food.

The food was a mixture of Fergie and Jesus. The tall bartender reminded me of Mick Jagger. This place is great.

Had a surprise party here and they were very accommodating! Food was great as was our server!

We went one day, the service was awful, but food was incredible. We went back the next day, because the company wanted it instead of a new restaurant to try. The service was even worse. I ordered the same thing I had before, it was awful - old sauce, absolutely nothing tasted the same as the night before, and under pasta was undercooked. Even the muscles had different spices to them...strange. For that amount of money, after company leaves, we will go back in and talk with manager. We didn't want to complain and ruin our company's evening. We had a fabulous time only because of the company...Not the restaurant...one dish tasted like rice a roni...

While the food was quite good....thw service was so bad that I would not return. We waited about an hr between our appetizer course and main course. With all of the wonderful restaurants in the Charleston area, i will.not be giving this one a second look

Enjoyed lunch, romantic decor, we had the best seat, a step up from the floor into a get away seating area. I had the creamy risotto with asparagus and seared scallops. Husband had sausage roasted tomato and mozzarella pizza. Everything Delish! Will be back!
