Review Brown Dog Deli - Charleston

Balakay Smith
I had a great experience at Brown Dog Deli in Charleston, SC. The place is cozy and charming, with a friendly staff and a diverse menu. The first time we went, I ordered the Big Mac sandwich, which was a delicious twist on the classic burger. It was juicy, flavorful, and satisfying. The portions were generous and the prices were reasonable. I would definitely recommend Brown Dog Deli to anyone looking for a tasty and casual meal in Charleston.

So delicious! I’m vegetarian and try to eat vegan, if possible. I had the vegetarian chicken sandwich and it’s the best I’ve ever had. My pup also enjoyed a delicious side of turkey. Perfect service. The sweet gal taking my order was super helpful. It’s rare, these days, to have a five star experience in all aspects. Much appreciated. Will return when I’m back in Charleston.

The food and atmosphere here is great. Tons of things on the wall that you can reminisce and tell your kids all about them! I had the chicken of the sea sandwich and it was delicious! Will definitely be back here again.

I got the Apple Butter Jeans & it was delicious. Service was friendly. Food came out quick and there was plenty of seating. Parking was difficult, but I found a spot on the street a few blocks away.

The wife and I went here for lunch the other day. First when you walk in it's very nostalgic. There's an old arcade machine, hot wheels on the wall, action figures. Super cool. For a drink I got a cherry vanilla pop thing and it was delicious. I ordered the devil wears burrata and the wife got the apple butter jeans. They were both super delicious! I would absolutely go back again! The only reason it wasn't a 5 star experience is because we showed up an hour and a half before they closed bc we didn't wanna be jerks and show up within the last hour. Well as we were taking our time with the menu and enjoying the decor, the waitress came up to us and told us they were closing in 10 minutes. They were nice enough to let us stay and eat, but there hours have not been updated online and it wasn't a nice surprise to discover.

We had Chipotle Chicken pita, folly crunch wrap, chili cheese dog, 3 bags of chips and 3 bottles of coke. Food was great! Had to order take out since no available seats, but I took pictures of every wall while waiting! From Garbage pail cards to Atari games decorating door ways to retro board games on tables to play, it was almost sensory overload. Menu is large, hope we have to visit again while in town!!

My wife and I made this our last stop on the trip right before we went to the airport. It seemed like there was going to be a wait, but they turn the tables over pretty quickly so we didn't have to wait long. The hostess was great. Our server, Christian, was excellent. My wife and I both had the French dip and couldn't have been happier. I'd really love to try more of their sandwiches next time. What a great experience.

This place was amazing. The food was so good and I was not disappointed at all. The place was extremely packed, but they move pretty fast! I highly recommend the Southwest Cobb Salad and the buffalo wrapped with the flaming Doritos ❤️❤️❤️

Great location. Great service. Great food. We had the grilled cheese and a salmon burger. Both were excellent. What else can you ask for…?
Nicole Toothaker
I ordered their chic feel ay sandwich and it was delicious. They also had wonderful coffee drinks. The atmosphere is cool and board/video themed. I loved all of the dog decor too.

Really enjoy the ambience of this place, but there were a few disjointed elements to the visit… The food was amazing! The bathroom was dark and dreary. They served an espresso macchiato without foam. the smoke from the grill was a bit excessive.

Went here a couple times during our week in. Charleston. Blackened salmon wrap and short rib grilled cheese were both very tasty. Side of broccoli salad was also very tasty, just wished there was a bit more of it. Had a cute little shaded outdoor area.

The Smash Bros Burger was juicy. The Bikini Bottom smoothie was bursting with flavor but was overpriced ($8 for a 16 oz). We did enjoy the atmosphere though!

We stopped at Brown Dog on Saturday around 11:15 am for a quick sandwich. It perfectly met our needs and expectations. We were seated quickly and given the option of the patio - which was lovely. It’s a mix of a cave area and also more of an open patio. Our server was kind and quick. We had pig and fig and apple butter jeans - both were great! Sides are small a but we didn’t quite finish our whole meals anyway. I had the tortellini pasta salad and my husband had the potato salad. The inside ambiance is retro and quaint. Would definitely recommend if you’re looking for a casual, quick spot to grab a fresh sanduzzle.

This was the first place my wife and I visited in Charleston and it was a fantastic choice. Stopped for some great sandwiches and had great service from Christian. We had the Cuban and Pig n’ Fig and really liked them both. Sides were excellent as well. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a great outdoor lunch spot on their back patio!

I stopped in for a late lunch. I ordered the lunch special. The sandwich was basically a patty melt with Swiss cheese, grilled onions, and thousand island dressing. It was delicious! I could tell they had made the thousand island dressing and it was the best I have ever tasted. They should bottle it and sell it! Try it if you want great food, fast, friendly service, and cute atmosphere!

Calling this place a sandwich shop is doing it a disservice, but this sandwich shop is really special. I had the meatball sandwich and it was so good. Three giant meatballs slathered in melted mozz sitting in a delicious garlic buttered hogie. It beat my expectations
Andrew Hoots
I had the buffalo chicken wrap and it was amazing! The flavors blended well together and was altogether a great wrap (one of the best I’ve had…honestly!). The atmosphere is also fun and creative with all of the nostalgic items all over the restaurant. It took me back to my childhood as a millennial gamer kid 🎮 🕹️

The Brown Dog at 225 Calhoun Street is an awesome place to grab a quick sandwhich for lunch or dinner if you're a student or in the working area. Some of my personal favorites for the sandwhiches are the Macintosh, Chipotle Chicken Pita, Fig N' Pig, and the Benton's Bacon Philly. As far as the burgers, i get the South Bound Burger which comes with 2 patties so that's amazing in itself. The salads are huge and very filling. I could go on and on. A hidden special in the menu is the Holy City Hibachi with chicken. It's very tasty and only $9. The restaurant had a delightful ambiance with good music and extremely caring staff. They offer quality beer and I love this place. So go try this out and it will not disappoint.

The food here is amazing, but not quite as amazing as their staff. We brought two dogs and seven people to their back patio. Suzanne and the rest of the staff could not have been more helpful, securing us a few tables on the patio, getting our dogs water, and telling us of the underground Prohibition tunnel. There is something on the menu for everyone, from foodies to those that want something simple.

Decided to try this place a few weeks ago. Went to the Calhoun street address. I’d been looking forward to it because of its extensive list of vegetarian options. They had salads and meatless sides but so few places embrace meatless options when t comes to entrees. So needless to say, I was pumped when I saw burgers, wraps, veggie dogs etc. When I got there I already knew what I wanted and so I ordered it. Unbeknownst to me, what I got wasn’t what I ordered but out of stupidity brought on by hunger I just ate it and it was good AF! I’m probably the only Mediterranean chick you’ll ever find who doesn’t like hummus mind you, but here they brought me a pita with hummus and I was scarfing it down. Moments into my food make-out sesh my waitress came over and told me they made a mistake and gave me the wrong dish, but it was still vegetarian and like I said, delicious so I didn’t care. On top of that, they gave me my original order and a ton of fries for free so I had a meal for the next day! I would strongly recommend this establishment to those looking for great deli food and vegetarian options that extend beyond what most of us are used to. Overall just a nice place with fantastic food!

This place was great! My husband and I had our dog with us so we needed a dog friendly place because we couldn’t leave her in the car.(she’s a very low maintenance dog so I knew she wouldn’t cause any issues) The food was good and the service was even better. The waitress even brought our dog water. I thought that was really sweet! Coming from out of town we will definitely be back!

In Charleston visiting for the weekend and needed an easy, local lunch since both kids fell asleep in the car. This place was the best decision ever. The fried green tomato BLT was to die for. Service was super friendly and everything we ordered was spot on. Definitely recommend. (Calhoun st. location)

One of our favorite places in Charleston. Everything I’ve had there has been excellent, bursting with flavor! From the taco salad to the gourmet hotdogs to the amazing sandwiches like the Rueben, you can’t go wrong! If you’re in Charleston, you must eat here!!

We were in town visiting our daughter who works for the College of Charleston. Quite a few of the RA’s recommended your restaurant so we decided to give it a try! From the very second we entered everyone was so friendly and helpful with the menu suggestions. So many awesome choices you pretty much just need to close your eyes and point! We went with the chicken and waffles, a meatball sub and a grilled chicken pita that was loaded with the most amazing veggies (amazing flavors)! We also had those incredible fries and a side of the most delicious broccoli & kale salad you’ve ever tasted! We can’t wait to come back and try more items from the menu!

Food was amazing and the staff was so attentive and friendly. One of the first things our waiter did was bring a bowl of nice ice water for my friend’s dog. Thank you!!

Best sandwich shop in Charleston. I highly recommend The Southern Charm...
Andrea Lynn Coverman-Cutler
This place was fantastic. My hunny ordered the chicken salad on a croissant with bacon and pepper jack added. I had the salmon & fried green tomato wrap with goat cheese added.

The pig n fig sandwich was excellent. The prices were reasonable.the best meal I had in Charleston and the cheapest price

The food and the atmosphere is great! My husband and I took our two blue heelers with us and were amazed how dog friendly the restaurant was. The hospitality was excellent. We had a great server and we will definitely be coming back to this place!

Love the Decour, and service were attentive, the food was very good however the chef need to go a little bit later on the salt other than that can’t complain. Prices wonderful

A great find being an out of Towner I found this little gem and loved the food and service. Only open 11-4 but great place

Good local place where both tourists and locals visit. I had the French Onion Grilled Cheese and ate it while walking around town. While this restaurant was PACKED, service wasn’t too slow at all. The food was good and it was worth the wait.

This casual clean little deli has a lot of menu options. You can order at the counter if you are taking your food to go or take a seat and they will bring you a menu.

I am a sucker for a good chili dog and when I saw they had poutine, well I had to try it! My chili dog was packed! I seriously could not figure out how to pick it up so I ended up eating it with a fork and knife. The bread was a bit much so I did end up with bites without the hot dog. I like mustard but the amount they added was over the top. The poutine is large enough for four! I would have liked more gravy on it and ended up only eating a few bites. The gravy just wasn't very flavorful and it was skimpy.

I have been to this deli before and I would return. Just not for the hot dog or the poutine. They have better menu options. This visit was just ok.

This is a small restaurant in downtown Charleston on Broad Street. There are two locations downtown and one at Folly Beach – not sure if there are more but these are the ones we saw. The inside is small and quirky with lots of unique decorations. Reminded me of an old soda shop. There is inside and outside seating. The service was good even though it was busy on a late Thursday afternoon. They have a small beer menu but there are enough choices to find something to like. The menu has eclectic items (short rib grilled cheese) and old standbys (Reuben). I ordered the salmon, watermelon and feta salad with pomegranate mint dressing. I was hesitant to order salmon in a (mostly) sandwich shop but it was cooked perfectly. The whole salad was quite good. My spouse ordered the fried green tomato & pimiento cheese BLT. He devoured it and said between hasty bites how good it tasted. It’s pretty obvious why this place is so popular.

This is an adorable, quaint place! Very eclectic decor with classic Charleston charm. Best She crab soup I’ve had! Great waitstaff! It is definitely a hidden gem!!

Love this place visit every time we come to Charleston. Great sandwiches and kid friendly. Yummy hot dogs. Beer and wine. Outside patio. Must go.

What a pleasant little place. We travel with our dog and look for places that will allow us to have her with us. The Brown Dog Deli fits this to a "T". The food is very good and the staff exceptional. I highly recommend this place even you are not traveling with your pets.

I absolutely love this place. I went for the first time, last week, while I was in Charleston for the day. It took me forever to decide what I wanted, the menu is large (not too large, but large enough to make you indecisive) and everything appealed to me. Not one thing looked bad. I got the black bean patty in the jalepeño cheddar wrap and it was delicious. The restaurant is also visually appealing, lots of cool artwork.
Alexis
Food was great but we waited over an hour for our food after our orders were placed. We also had to chase down our server to get a second round of beers. Then, she brought the bill for $X and when she took my card she charged it for more than the original bill. Service was horrible.

Was in town for a few days and wanted to try something new downtown Charleston. Decided to hop into this unique looking place. Splashed with color and decked to the ceiling with old vinyl. They have a open kitchen so you can watch the cook craft your sandwich. They also have seating outside and a nice little bar offering local or craft beers. one of us got the Chipotle Chicken Salad which was large and loaded with toppings. The Chipotle dressing was great and is very spicy. The other got the tofu melt which will satisfy satisfy any veggie head. We also got the Hawaiian Salmon Burger which had a large piece of fish and was very good. I got the Big Mac which is a short rib sandwich with mac and cheese on it, this is one great sammie and has a nice sweetness with the Cheerwine BBQ sauce. The potato salad is very good too. The only drawback is the sandwiches are expensive for having no sides come with it. If you want a great sandwich or salad in Charleston, give this place a shot!

In a town of $$$$ restaurants, Brown Dog is a vacation for your cc. Excellent hot dogs (chili cheese and Chicago are my favs), wraps and deli sandwiches.

Our first time eating here & it was awesome! Food was hot & great flavor! Waitress was friendly & efficient! We will be back for more!
I had the pig & fig& my husband had the Mr. R B's BBQ. (I think that's what it was called)

The Pig N Fig sandwich at Brown Dog Deli is pulled pork, fig-rosemary preserves, Granny Smith apples, apple-wood smoked bacon, and cheddar cheese on a panini-pressed local french baguette. The fruit flavors mixed really well with the pork, and having everything pressed together in a hot sandwich made this really delicious. I got mine to go, and it held up really well.

Great sandwiches, really unique creations. Fantastic service. We highly recommend this place.

We are IN LOVE with this place!. If you haven’t given Brown Dog Deli a try, you really should! The sandwiches are gourmet, the savory chili has just the right amount of kick, and despite an expansive menu full of delicious food, the atmosphere is pretty laid back. The best of all worlds, especially if you have children...sublime flavor fusions but with affordable prices and a lack pretentiousness (and uneasiness if you're trying to keep your kids in perfect form) that many of the most popular (and ostensibly, “most tasty”) restaurants in town tend to have. While Brown Dog doesn't offer all the fancy dishes that other 5-star establishments offer in town, everyone finds plenty of satisfaction for the taste buds with their wonderful offerings! Think out of the deli box, because this place will blow your socks off! Brown Dog Deli is a real hidden gem that should not be missed!

Tip: The back patio is a great place to dine...really nice ambiance to go with your really nice food!

Got the Knuckle sandwhich on my first visit. Delicious wrap with the perfect spice and flavor balance!! I look forward to returning and trying other creative sandwiches. Wish they had a location in Columbia!!

Lunch. Chedder jalapeño wrap with lettuce and tuna possibly the best I have had in a while

Great food!. Calm, relaxed atmosphere, especially if you eat outside.

Excellent food at a great price. Everything is fresh and the huge menu has anything you could ever want out of a deli. Nice staff, too.

A must go to lunch spot in charleston. As a vegetarian, I was thrilled with all the options. I ordered the Greek salad and it was one of the best I've had. All staff were very friendly and offered excellent service.

I've been here about 7 times now and I get something different every time. I've never been disappointed. It's awesome! The menu is huge and the waitresses are all very friendly. I really just wanna eat here every day of my life.

Amazing experience. Menu is pleasantly overwhelming. This place manages to be cool for locals and tourists alike without the cliche dim lighting and grunge. Service was upbeat, positive, and downright exceptional. They even afforded me the opportunity to drink a local beer from the owners exclusive stash. The sandwiches exceeded all expectations. My only regret was only eating here once. Portablello Philly from vegetarian menu highly recommended.

Great Lunch Spot. Went yesterday. Ordered muffaletta and a side of broccoli salad, both of which were tasty. Wife has the warm spinach and bacon salad, which she enjoyed.

Aside from the fact that I tried to order twice from the chalkboard menu displayed prominently and the waitress told me that they couldn't make those items, and none of the employees felt like getting out the chalk and changing it... I finally ordered something on the menu that they could make and it wasn't even good. The Georgia Reuben had barely any turkey and was dripping in way too much sauce. My boyfriends salad was boring and tasteless. Will not be returning for the crappy food or for the crappy service.
Jersey Girl
Horrible service. Went to this place yesterday. I was really excited about the vegan menu. No one offered to assist me. They assume you know it's self seating. I had to ask waitress to clear a table and when she did, another worker sat there to do his paperwork. I was so annoyed, I walked out. Perhaps I didn't get service from the Brown dog deli because I am brown!?!? No way am I going to be ignored when I'm spending my money!,

So Good Sandwiches. Everyone in our party of ten loved their sandwich and no one got the same one! Lots of twists on traditional sandwiches. Sides cost extra, but the sandwiches were more than enough on their own. I got my two year old a fruit cup side and all of the fruit was incredibly fresh. The waitress was learning the ropes but the manager stepped in to smooth things out. The only down side is that it is on the small side for a sit down place and they don't take names. Our party didn't get to sit together and half of us were hovering around tables that looked like they were leaving so we could grab it before another party. Made the beginning of the meal kind of stressful and honestly we almost left. Glad we didn't and the next time we go we'll go in off hours. Oh, they have an outdoor seating area but on the day we went it was hotter than an oven and not an option.
Nicolette Boese
Tasty. Just happened to stumble upon this place as we were walking around hungry. Had the warm bacon salad, everything was fresh and was just the right amount. The keylime pie was also amazing

Would not get the Muffaletta again, but the tomato soup was very good.

Amazing restaurant!! I had the Zorba the Greek salad with chicken which was delicious, especially the feta on it.
Julian
My sandwich was about as close to perfect as could be.
Christina
Delicious food! Plenty of vegan/organIc/gluten free options, so everyone left happy. The owner was friendly, and it has a nice atmosphere with good music.

Its Gettin' Chili.... I have always been a pretty tough Deli critic. I went to the Brown Dog Deli yesterday for the 3rd time since it opened, this time bringing a friend along. For starters I had the Angus Beef Chili and my friend had the Squash Bisque. The chili had the perfect kick, but I tried a bite of the bisque and wow, that was about as good as squash can get! For sandwiches, this time I tried the Banh Mi. I have heard Chef Wes mention that it was one of his personal favorites. I was pleased to see it wasnt a thick, greasy slab of pork and fat, that it was thinly sliced and still felt healthy. There are some fresh cut jalapenos in there that trigger your senses and then your mouth is quickly cooled by the in house citrus mayo. My buddy had the PBR. Although I didnt try it, it looked simple and delicious. Overall I have not had a bad meal there yet and now recommend it to all of my friends. I strongly suggest checking it out if you have not been. You will not be disappointed.

Okay. So you all know I have this unhealthy (to say the least) hankering for hot dogs. Like, I love hot dogs so much that if I see one on a menu, as long as it’s not covered in anything chili-y, I will very likely order it. Yep. Despite my recent emboldened proclamations of eating real food and cooking with real ingredients from this day forward forever and ever amen, hot dogs still remain at — or near — the very top of my list of all time favorite dream foods. (Of course, I use the term “food” very loosely.)

How do I judge a restaurant? Well, I am still thinking about eating this incredible Tempeh Reuben three days after the fact....
Christina
While it was much different than a typical NE lobster roll, I liked it. The delicious homemade toasted bun was filled with a ton of meat, which wasn’t heavily soaked in mayo. There was a bit of celery, cabbage, and parsley, so essentially this was lobster salad in a roll.
