It's a cool building, idea, and atmosphere. The food is good but not great. Could use more seasoning. I do not recommend the fried chicken. You get a large portion but it did not taste like it had ANY seasoning.
Historic schoolhouse:
This is a must to have lunch or dinner, the oldest two story schoolhouse in the nation, now a country style restaurant that sits "family" style ever thin on the menu is written on the classroom blackboard, all the food are served on lazy Susan's and you will not be disappointed with any of the courses, one of the best fried chicken you will experience.
Highly Recommended
Don't miss it. Home made fried chicken, pan or deep fried chicken livers, ham slices as big as the plate, mashed potatoes and killer gravy, super slaw, salad with great house dressing and big bowls of sides...just like your Grandma used to make...whats not to like? It's hard to find places like this. Think I'll go this weekend.
Best Fried Chicken in Cincinnati By Far!. If you are looking for your mom's fresh fried chicken you will find it at the Schoolhouse Restaurant. Even my mother prefers they make it now. I am addicted to the mashed potatos and the chicken gravy and the cole slaw. One of us always gets the chicken (me) and then the other gets something else on the menu and we share. Its all good. Good food, wonderful staff. Love this place.
Corn Fritters, Corn Fritters, Corn Fritters!!!. I've been going to the schoolhouse since I was a toddler (a very long time ago). The restaurant is very loud (it's one big schoolroom) and waits on Friday and Saturday can be long. But, I love this place. The corn fritters are unlike anything I've ever had anywhere else. I could eat a large order of them by myself. Corn fritters with honey. Order extra chicken and extra fritters and take some home in a doggie-sack. They're even better the next day.
LOVE IT!. My family loves this place. It's like going to Grandmas for dinner. My teenage daughter has selected this place for her birthday dinner a couple of times. Fried chicken is my favorite, my daughters too. My husband loves the meatloaf and catfish.
Only 1 complaint. Excellent family style food with lazy susans on the table. Vegetables are seriously over cooked, but the entres are very good. Nice country setting.
So good!. Schoolhouse Restaurant is a favorite. Our dining group (Meetup.com Tea Toads) enjoys sitting at the Lazy Susan tables. There are so many wonderful menu items and plenty of food to "go 'round". Being in a real schoolhouse and finding out more about it's history makes the experience even more enjoyable. It's casual, family-friendly and so very special! Take your friends, take your family and save room for dessert!
What a charming place!!. Made the trek from Colerain out to the Schoolhouse in Camp Dennison and it was sooo worth it! My boyfriend and I decided to stop in last night for a little dinner date. This place has such a quaint atmosphere and friendly service. We had some questions about the menu and our server, Mary, answered everything we wanted to know and even gave us some suggestions. The taste and the quantity of the food was well worth the price. There was so much southern home cooking to go around. Not only did we get our entrees, but we also got mashed potatoes/gravy, two vegetables, and cornbread with the meal, and even slaw and salad before the meal. They even refill your potatoes, salad, and veggies if you run out and want more. My boyfriend has a big appetite and he left feeling extremely satisfied, even with left overs! One thing I wish we would have gotten was the homemade desserts. They looked so yummy! This place is great for a date or even dinner with the family. They even have a little consignment shop in the back. You MUST check them out! :)
Wow.... I gotta say I'm disappointed I've waited so long to visit! Service was wonderful, it has a nice homey atmosphere, the portions were massive and the food was just down home good. I tried the Schoolhouse Fried Chicken and Friend had the Roast Beef. Both were served up fresh, hot and delicious along with sweet corn, green beans and mashed potatoes as well as corn bread and biscuits.
A wonderful hidden treasure....
Great Comfort Food. I just had finner for the first time at the Schoolhouse and it was very enjoyable. Lots of entree choices -- I had the salmon and the rest of my table had fried chicken.
It was a nice dinner at a very reasonable price. Very friendly atmosphere.
GREAT FOOD!. My family & I ate at the Schoolhouse Restaurant last night. The food was so delicious. They start you off with salad & cole slaw. Once your food comes you can't believe your eyes because it is bowl after bowl of food and did I say delicious! You will not go home hungry! Everyone we saw was taking home doggy bags.
The owners are so down home and couldn't have been nicer. They made us feel like they had known us for years. If you haven't tried this restaurant, make sure you do because you will not be disappointed. This is a restaurant we will definitely return to. It is a must EAT!
Wonderful family style comfort food. Highly recommended for groups, but could be fun on a date as well.
Back Open. The Schoolhouse is back open for business. They had a fire in June but reopened in mid-October. Everything is back to the way it was, and even better. I am a little biased, but when I went there with a group from work, and again with my family during the holiday, the food was just like I remembered it before the fire. Though I still maintain that it is the best fried chicken in Cincinnati hands down, I went back to my old standard, the pan fried chicken livers. Call it comfort food, but even better than I what remember from my childhood. (Don't tell Mom.)
Now, I'm nosy, too. I have been since I was as a kid. I grew up in a town where I was always finding myself inside historical buildings from the Civic War and Victorian eras. I loved explore those places whenever I could.
At the Schoolhouse, I was still that wandering kid at heart. I know the owners, so there was no problem when I asked if I could peek upstairs. I always told them before the fire that the upstairs auditorium was dark, and I didn't like it very much. Well, when they repaired the auditorium which had suffered a lot of smoke damage in the fire, the owners decided to refinish the original floor (which had been buried beneath carpet) and repaint in lighter colors more true to the original building. To folks like me who love those old buildings, it brought out so much. The space just opened up. It was a space I could entertain in.
It was such a pleasure to eat in a small family-owned restaurant, for a group of us to laugh and enjoy each other. It is worlds away from the sterile chain restaurants that are so common these days. With quality and service slipping in the corporate run impersonal eateries that dominate family dining, it is so nice to experience some TLC at a family-friendly establishment that has some history, and character, and really good comfort food.
Great place for a real family meal. Not fancy but good normal food and a great meal for the family. Everything is made from scratch and you sit around big round tables so it is a great place to take your family and not have the TVs, bad muzak and other distractions that the chain restaurants have.
A must try. If you havent tried the schoolhouse you must! Their sides are worth going alone, best cole slaw, mashed potatoes, and cornbread ever! I cant wait to go back, im very upset i forgot to take pictures. Now seating is kinda cramped and you might expect a bit of a wait but it is well worth it.
A Great Local Place. The School House is a family favorite. Chris always makes you feel at home even when there is a long wait. I have not had a bad meal there yet. Everything is always good and you definitely leave full!
Tried and Fell in Love. Updated Review: We tried it and fell in love with it. Can't believe they've been in our backyard all this time! We had family in from NY & Boston and wanted to find something unique and also entertaining. We got that and then some. The wait for our party of 9 (& 1 preggars) only had a 30 minute wait and they were ultra-busy despite getting there at 6:30pm. We found a cute general store (although it did smell of animal pee) but the highlight had to be the farm animals and roaming roosters and french hens. This kept the kiddo's and adults equally entertained. Plenty of park benches and memorabilia to keep you busy too. The whole place feels like farm meets old schoolhouse meets your southern grammi's kitchen and home. We were told long ago to try their buttermilk fried chicken - and this recommendation was right on. Hands down the best entree of all we tried. The salmon left something to be desired, but the catfish was fantastic. All meals are priced around $11-20 but this includes an endless, family-style array of wonderful side dishes (mashed potatoes w/ gravy were divine), salad, green beans, cole slaw, apple sauce, etc. We left "filled to the gills" and with a shopping bag full of boxes...note: yes, the fried chicken can easily serve 2-3 people!!!
Original Review: Can't wait to try Schoolhouse...after hearing so much about it, and now speaking with owner, and son of original owners, Chris Miller, I really can't wait. He was so nice, and his love for the menu, place & it's history is so apparent & awesome. Goin' love me some southern kitchen cooking this weekend!
I adore this place! The food is great. Everything you'd expect from a place that serves good down home southern cookin. The fried chicken is The absolute best.
Awesome home cooking. Really awesome stew tomatoes and critters
Great atmosphere and service! Most of the food was awesome. Mine had a little too much sauce, but that's just a preference.
I chose here to celebrate my 5oth birthday. The service was great. Our server, Ms. Angela was great, and the cook was amazing, she made my sister some extra salmon sauce. Thank you.
Best fried chicken! It's hard to decide what to get, everything is delicious.
An old schoolhouse decided to become a restaurant one day and retain this quaintness. There is a blackboard that contains some menu so it's kind of a unique experience that I'm sure that you will enjoy each table has a lazy Susan on the top where items are placed side dishes and things of that nature salad and easy to get to that way kind of need. You want to try their fried Chicken and if you go away hungry it's because you were already full when you got there there's so much food in terms of your options and it's so good that you'll go back so make sure you make an appointment because that's how you get in you are temperature checked at the entrance and the wait staff is very friendly and helpful!
Always a excellent choice! Great Family Style Dinner in an historic setting!
Very good food, with a neat atmosphere in an old schoolhouse. You have quite a large menu of options and large portion entrees and sides served served family style that may be refilled if you need more.
Its a good family place to eat at, especially if you aren't from around here. The food is really good and everything is made in house. They also have a playground for kids, as well as a couple goats and sometimes chickens. They have the school bus that ran before the school became a restaurant. They also have a little antique store which is nice where you can buy candy and I believe they have a few collectors items.
The food was excellent! My husband and I were here this evening and were stuffed - we ate everything! Sadly, we were too full for dessert (a shame, since I really had my eye on the blackberry cobbler). I got the turkey and mashed potatoes, and my husband got the fried chicken. The corn bread was "mighty tasty"!
The restaurant itself is a treat for anyone who enjoys history - the menu was written on a chalkboard that covered the entire front wall of the dining room. For added "scholarly" feel, the Denealean alphabet was posted above the chalkboard (just as so many of us remember from our early school days). They had interesting tools displayed that were used in bygone eras - interestingly designed carpet beaters, ice tongs, stoneware water jugs, and other articles of the past. Of particular interest was a young student's framed report card from 1897, which was posted near the cash register. The second floor housed the gymnasium and stage (now used for specially booked events) - while walking through the old gym I found myself wondering just how many students had traversed its floors over the school's more than 100 years of existence.
Bottom line: I would go there again. Lovely piece of history and great food. The prices were not "cheap", but for the quality and amount of food, it was worth it.
