Review Hei La Moon - Boston

Went for dim sum on a Thursday (no carts) and Saturday (with dim sum carts) for dim sum. Super nice how the take reservations, as they were very accommodating for our party of 20. From the Dim Sum selection, our favorites would be the Shu Mai, Chive Dumplings, and Spare Ribs. The Egg Tarts were a bit disappointing as they were a bit soggy on the bottom and didn’t have great flavor. Solid place for dim sum

My bf goes here on the weekdays with his coworkers. He took me here on a Saturday for the first time. We weren't aware that you couldn't order from the menu and only order from the carts. When asking some questions, one of the workers seemingly berated him in Chinese. I understand how language barriers can be difficult to work around, and I understand this is a Chinese restaurant, but it was really unacceptable to be yelled. We eventually were able to speak with other patrons who explained it to us, and we enjoyed the food. The chicken wings, shrimp dumplings, and watermelon soup were my favorite. We were also told we could order other menu items, so we ordered the peach buns thinking peach would be in them, but it was bean paste.

Was definitely a fun visit to this dim sum spot in Boston’s Chinatown. Service was efficient and helpful - and aided in mixing/matching some dishes. Pork rolls, pork dumplings, shrimp har gow and others were all extremely tasty. Typical dim sum palace décoré. Overall a fun experience.

I can say the food was amazingly delicious 😋, they have a great variety of food flavors and textures, and you can share with others. The restaurant was clean and full 👌, mostly all the time. If you don't want TEA, tell them right away because it is cost $5 dollars, isn't free. Something we didn't like was the Chinese waitress. She was very rude and in a hurry. She passed another one and gave us a dish that we didn't order, she was at our table for more than 15 minutes and at the moment another one passes by, takes it and delivers it to another table. they shouldn't do that. They don't even know if we touch it. Try to order everything in one time because they're confused 😕, and it takes a lot of time to receive the other plates.

Wish I knew they moved last year but we didn’t until this year. Well this location is bigger and wait time is less. Food quality ? Feel like the old hey la moon is better but this is still very tasty. Can’t go wrong if you wanna give it a try. Try it!

They have basic dim sum plates and some other interesting dishes. Overall it was good. The waiters and the cart ladies were nice. However, there was a FOH lady that was super rude to us and to other staff. To a point you can totally see that's she's pissed. That left a bad taste in my mouth watching how rude she was to other people!

Came on the weekend for dim sum. Had the carts come around and you get to pick your food. Delicious!

Seeking a your traditional dim sum cart restaurant with grumpy Chinese ladies serving you food? Look no further! Lovely dim sum restaurant! Congee is great, dim sum selection is traditional and wonderful, and atmosphere is what you’d expect at a dim sum restaurant!

Went here on a rainy afternoon when I had a 2 hr changeover in Boston. The pork Shumai was the best. Get the roasted pork bun just for the sweet bun. I ordered the red bean cake; maybe it’s an acquired taste but I felt it was just okay.

I really wanted to give them a five star because I used to love their dim sum when I lived here four years ago. However, it seems like they've lost their touch after they moved location. It's just never the same without the push cart. It's missing that excitement and freshness. I still enjoy the tastes of the food though. The beef chow fun is so good I could eat two plates of it. The shrimp dumplings and chive dumplings are my favorites. Chicken feet and the pork ribs are on the must-order list. Still highly recommend this place to anyone who wants some good dim sum.

I haven't tried many dim sum places to really give a valid verdict, but this place served us really delicious dishes. Pan fried noodle with beef was amazing. Their wonton soup was very tasty and was very clean after taste. Overall I really liked this place

Beautiful place for tapas style Dim Sum. If you want to try multiple items and wanted to try small portions. I highly recommend this place in Chinatown. The restaurant is open till 9:00 pm, however, the kitchen closes at 8:30 pm. If you are planning your dinner around 8ish, there are high chances that you might not get most of the items. I also like the way that the order sheet has a small picture of most of the items. So it is easy to relate and order.

Really good dim sum food and experience! Unfortunately they weren’t doing the dim sum cart when I went (Tuesday morning around 11 am). You just order dim sum from the menu then they bring it to you. The tea was fantastic. No wait but it was pretty busy. Highly recommend!

We just had to had some lobster while in Boston so we decided to take a visit to Hei La Moon after seeing their cheap lobster deal.

Service: 6/10
The workers were overloaded with requests which may have resulted in the bad attitude. They responded to us very slowly because they couldn’t keep up. The food was served quickly, within 15 minutes.

Food: 8/10
The lobsters were fresh and good quality for a cheap price. The food is quite authentic and there is a large variety of options to choose from. The mapo tofu wasn’t too spicy and the tofu was very soft. The portions are generous.

Ambiance: 8/10
The restaurant is very big and spacious. The inside just looks like any typical chinese restaurant. It gets very busy and noisy at night making it very lively.

Co-workers and I have been frequenting Hei La Moon for Dim Sum lunches for as long as our company building has been downtown (three years now!) We'll introduce newbies, bid farewell to those moving on, or we'll straight up satisfy a craving for the insanely good Chinese food only

It's all Chinese to me.

Hei La Moon can be a bit intimidating for those of us who are less familiar with this type of cuisine. So grab your best Chinese chum, and get ready for an exotic explosion!

11:30 AM for Saturday brunch, and the place is already packed. But it's also huge, so we get a table for 4 in the lower level immediately. Upon sitting, we receive a pot of green tea, and immediately carts are strolling past with intriguing options. It seems like we tried all the things - from chewy tripe to every version of a dumpling imaginable. Many thanks to our token Chinese friend who fielded all of our questions and made the majority of our decisions. There's definitely a lot of trust involved here.

My personal faves were the steamed pork buns, sweet egg custard buns, red bean mochi, and fish cakes. The main downside is that some of the food is not completely hot and doesn't taste as fresh as if it were cooked to order (such as over at Windsor Cafe, which you should try btw). Also, the staff with the carts could come across as pushy at times (do they get paid commission per plate sold?), and we found it impossible to decode pricing for each. After you agree to take one, they just mark the paper on your table and set off.

So we were pleasantly surprised when all the food that led to our bursting bellies only came out to around $11 per person! It's such a satisfying, social experience to be able to sample so many different foods and share with friends at such a minimal cost. The food quality may not be the highest, but the variety, authenticity, and experience certainly is!

Pro tip: Avoid the bathrooms if you would like to still have an appetite upon your return to the table. And they'll only split checks on up to 2 cards.

Terrible service. The food was served lukewarm - they were not steamed long enough. Did not get our order of steamed BBQ pork buns. Complaining to the rude manager did not matter. Got handed the check to pay and that was it. Parking in garage above was $20/hour. So it was a ridiculously expensive bad meal.

The epitome of Chinatown dim sum.. What can I say? The atmosphere is as hectic and tapas-ish as can be, the food is steaming and delicious across the board, the bathrooms are (as per Chinatown stereotypes) subpar, and the service is of course faster than you'd expect women pushing food carts to be. Go with a group of friends or as a family; Hei La Moon is always a fun time.

Usually I stray away from chinese food in chinatown, but the dimsum here was surprisingly good. Its defintely crowded on the weekend, but with two floors and a constant turnover of people, there wasn't a wait. The carts were a little slow to make the rounds and lacked variety (mostly dumplings) but for what it was the food was quite tasty. We gorged on dumplings for a very reasonable price.

Yummy lunch. Busy, and delicious plus a great value! $42 for 4 people.

Not something I will try again. This is probably just something I'm not familiar with but total lack of texture to any of the offerings was very unappealing. Everything was gelatinous and I couldn't really identify a single piece of meat. But there were a lot of people there who seemed to be very happy with the fare so again it is likely just a point of view. Oh but there was a wicked nasty smell in the back leading to the restrooms, so much so that I chose just to wait.

Carts of light mouth watering dumplings. This hit the spot and will top my list of favorite restaurants. The staff was kind although I couldn't understand them, and even though I had no idea which dumplins we chose, they were perfect. Eat here, and eat a lot!

One of the best in c-town. Very decent dimsum (better than many other places in c-town). used to have dinner there too, food's not bad at all.

sometimes service gets a bit rough--typical chinese restaurant. but that one time we went for dinner, the bill came to, say $60 and change for 4 of us, paid $70, and never saw anything back. um, we might not have taken a lot back, but for them to not even think about giving us change (or ASK upon receiving the money), that's not cool.

the place gets crowded on weekends during brunch/lunch hours, even tho they have two floors to fill people in. go early or prepare to wait.

they have validated parking in the garage right above, but the system is kind of stupid. you first have to pay the garage $11 (weekend fare) as you enter. upon leaving the restaurant, you pay the restaurant AGAIN for a $6 discounted fare, and get a stamp on your ticket. then, when exiting the garage, you show your stamped ticket and get $11 back from the garage. it's not too much of a hassle except when you go at night, the attendant might have left for the day by the time you exit the garage after dinner, and you end up paying TWICE for parking. absurd system, don't you think?
:)

Great food, great setting, easy to find. Duck - excellent! Everything we ordered was perfect.

Fun Sunday Treat. Our kids were out of town this weekend, so my wife suggested Dim Sum as a treat for the two of us. What a great idea.

We went to Hei la Moon on a friend's recommendation, and enjoyed everything we ate. The price was was good too -- just $24 for both of us.

The line to get in sizable (there were 30 parties before us), but the turn-over was so quick we only waited 20 minutes. Also don't expect English descriptions of of the dim sum, few of the staff pushing the carts could tell us more than 'chicken dumpling.' Still everyone was friendly and we had fun guessing what we just ate.

j

The restaurant was very clean and the servers were not pushy at all (no pun intended). Food was average. Since it was still so early (9:30 AM) they didn't have some of my favorite dim sum specialties like calamari, crab claw balls or clams in black bean sauce. Steam pork wrapped in bean curd, steamed pork spareribs and chicken feet Rice Congee with fried Chinese doughnuts Steam Roast Pork bun and pan fried rice noodle cake with shallots Minced pork rice cake...

Hei La Moon is a Cantonese restaurant located near South Station, just outside of Chinatown. They serve dim sum and dinner, although I’ve only tried them for dim sum – a traditional Chinese brunch, typically served family style, with many shared small dishes. I’ve also heard dim sum described as Chinese tapas. Severs come around with carts of food, you choose the dishes you want, and they stamp your bill which is totaled at the end and usually very cheap ($3-$4 per dish). The language barrier means you don’t always know exactly what you’re getting, but I enjoy this and think of it as part of the experience. I could however, see this as difficult for vegetarians or less adventurous eaters.

Overall, though, we thought that Hei La Moon had some enjoyable and affordable dim sum. I’ll certainly make it a point to go back and try some more interesting items as well, and see if I can track down some of the items that eluded me.

The atmosphere seems hectic, but everyone is in a jovial mood. There are long lines waiting outside for brunch, people bundled up and laughing, soaking in the unmistakable Chinatown air. Inside, tables are filled with hungry patrons - some are gesturing to catch the attention of the cart ladies, some are quickly downing the bite-size goodies with chopsticks. You hear loud conversations, the ting of metal carts, the plop of wooden steamer baskets. More laughter, more orders, more food. Welcome to dimsum brunch in Chinatown. Have you ever had dimsum? Dimsum is a Chinese dish involving small portions of food - usually dumplings, steamed dishes, and other savory items. They're little bites meant for sharing, tapas -style, served in little baskets or little plates. In Chinatown cities across the America, dimsum is most often served during the weekends, from 8 am to 2 pm, thus becoming dimsum brunch . And while I've never been to China myself, I do know that in Asia, Chinese dimsum is served

We went back to Hel La Moon Restaurant for another celebratory dim sum and lunch. The restaurant is located outside the Chinatown Gate at the base of the parking garage and near C-Mart, supermarket. Our parents love to kill two birds with one stone. Dim sum then Asian grocery shopping.
Baking Me Hungry
DIM SUM Hei La Moon serves dim sum until 3 pm on weekends. You definitely get an authentic dim sum experience- complete with the big round tables, waitresses pushing carts around, and loads Chinese people. Always remember that if the place is completely packed with Chinese people, odds are that the food is decent to pretty darn good. The restaurant is decorated with your typical Cantonese Chinese decorations- brightly colored or gold.

DINNER Located on the other artery of the surface road in Chinatown, we came back to Hei La Moon with our parents to share the special 10 course banquet menu for a much delayed family dinner. This special 10 course set price dinner is generally available only on the Chinese written menu for 8 or more people and geared towards Chinese tastes. Please note there are 2 menus at Hei La Moon. One in English and one in Chinese, the latter which has more authentic dishes. Chinese set menus are a great way to experience a wide variety of dishes when you have quite a few people to feed. There are usually several different banquet dinner options at various prices with the more expensive menus featuring more exotic items such as abalone, shark fin, or sea cucumber in their dishes. Assorted Cold Appetizer Platter It is customary to start off the meal with assorted cold appetizers. At Hei La Moon the "liangcai" consisted of chilled jellyfish in sesame oil, dry preserved five spice b

Back to Boston. This time missing good Chinese food. So when Nefertiti decided to visit we hopped on down to the tiny Boston Chinatown for Sunday yum cha (best way to describe this is Chinese brunch where little trolleys are pushed around and you can choo

'Chineser points' is a kind of game played by people, like myself, of Chinese-descent. There are no rules, but points are awarded or deducted for behaviour worthy or unworthy of being Chinese. To be honest, I'm not a great Chineser; I probably have a net points tally in the negative. However, as I get older I reckon I'm becoming better at accruing Chineser points. Take, for example, my recent visit to Boston, where I bagged a monster haul of points by visiting one of the most Chinese restaurants I have ever come across. Hei La Moon 囍臨門 might be located in New England, but it is very much Old China. This dai jau lau 大酒樓 – the kind of place that serves multi-course banquets by night, and dim sum by day – ticks all the Chineser-boxes (and more) with its gaudy red and gold interior; trolley-service dim sum; fish tanks at the entrance; multi-generation Chinese clientele and, last but not least, a super-auspicious address at 88 Beach St. Wu gok However, just because a restaurant looks the pa

I grew up in northwestern Ohio, where there really wasn't much Chinese food available. At most, we had our share of not-so-authentic Chinese buffets and Chinese take-out joints. In fact, my resourceful mom learned how to make all sorts of Chinese/Taiwanes

There did seem to be a trend of extra sweetness with many of the dishes and the usual additions of black beans and jalapeno peppers were conspicuously absent. Even with those omissions, the somewhat rustic textures of the dumplings and rolls were appealing and, outside of a few dry rolls and one or two overcooked shrimp, it was another successful dim sum lunch. I don’t think that Hei La Moon will rival anything I’ve had at Fung’s Kitchen, but it’s still a fine choice for a Sunday morning in Boston.

I have a whole back log of entries to make. You see with all the season finales on tv I've been kind of busy catching up, yes even with tivo. ;) We also made a short trip out to Vermont last weekend to celebrate pacman's b'day. Since the rain didn't stop,

It's been a while since I've had dim sum, so when Beth asked me to meet up at Hei La Moon this past Sunday I almost felt as though I had no say in the matter. As I was running a little late - I blame the Sunday subway schedule! - by the time I maneuvered

Hei La Moon Dim Sum Chinatown, Boston I'd say the atmosphere here is spacious, huge, really. The food is basic dim sum. The place packs up on Sundays, around brunch time, so get your table early. The tea is OK, but not as good as at China Pearl. Overall,
