Review Al's Cafe - Boston

Ordered: The Italian’s Italian Cost: $12 Thoughts: While it’s not the best of the best sub in the city (Monica’s Mercato), it has the BEST BREAD for a sub in Boston… a fantastic spot for lunch, and an incredible atmosphere. You won’t leave disappointed.

Al's......THANK YOU!!!!!! I walked over today from my work, and I was hoping and praying the chicken salad recipe had not changed in the last 15 years. Al's chicken salad was my absolute favorite sub of all time, and I would always get it when I was working as a deckhand for Boston Harbor Cruises. I am SO thrilled to say, it is as delicious as I remembered!!! I love that they don't put celery/raw onions into the mix. It is perfect as it comes, and I had lettuce and tomato onto my roll. The bread is fresh, and the regular/small size is huge! Thank you to all of you for your consistency in flavor, ability to manage a crowd (although I fortunately got right in today, arriving on the earlier side), and your team's welcoming attitudes. Al's still is and always with be the GOAT!!

The sub here is delicious and fresh, also affordable! Great customer service with everyone, From customers to delivery drivers! The small size sandwich filled me up from lunch to dinner, you won’t feel hungry!

Huge subs at an unbelievably reasonable price! I got a large steak and cheese with extra cheese and it was only $11. In the picture you will see 2 halves that I reheated in the oven when I got home. This is one large sub! Unlike some places where you ask for extra cheese and you’re wondering where the heck it is this was very cheesy. My wife has never ordered a chicken salad in all the years we’ve been together. Our daughter got a chicken salad sub which was huge and gave half to my wife. My wife said it was the best chicken salad she had ever eaten in her life. Through the years I’ve also had the chicken Parm and tuna salad. Both were delicious. Instead of using a regular sub roll it’s a huge piece of French bread. Best bread I’ve ever had from a sub shop.

Okay, this is my kind of place! Looks like about 50 people working back there yelling and making great food. This may have been the biggest sandwich I've ever seen in my life and it was only 12.50. Skip Quincy market, come here and go eat on the benches by Feniel Hall. No place to sit in the restaurant, but who cares. I got the Pizzaiola and it was packed full of meat. Amazing My son got the Tuna and it was excellent. Yes.

My go to lunch spot. The value is unmatched by any lunch spot and I really like both their hot and cold sandwiches. It can get hectic in there but the staff really knows how to handle everything

Amazing sandwiches; fast and delicious, perfect for an office lunch. Stereotypical fast-paced environment too; step up, say your order, ger the sandwich, pay, get out. Keep the line moving fast. Take out only. No seating here. A "small" 10 inch sandwich is plenty of food, especially if you get the bag lunch option; +$1.50 for chips and a drink. Tons of food, very filling.

Great hoagies, fresh baked bread, the small hoagie is very big and the large is huge. Small is 8.00 and large is 10.00. Very fast, friendly service. A great place for a good quick bite to eat. A must stop in Boston.

Very nice experience. I was in and out! Which is great. We got a hot sandwich and cold sandwich. Their bread is phenomenal!!

I thought it is a very normal sandwich place, do not understand why people were in the line for the food. Until I got my Steak Italiano! Smell nice, looked nice, tasted nice! Way better than Subway, definitely a really great place for lunch at downtown. People there are sweet. I was so happy being called honey all the time. Lol.

Best sub in Boston. Chicken salad close to the best I've ever had. Sad the old Harvard Square branch closed.

This place wins my personal value for money award. The large sandwich was 9 dollars but it was massive. Felt like it was 2 feet long and it was loaded with steak, cheese, and peppers. Almost no line when I went and it took 5 minutes from ordering to when I started chomping it down.

The Italian was so flavorful! I have it 4 stars because the break crust cuts up your mouth which makes the vinegar sting a big. Also, I do not recommend bringing your stroller in there, its too tight and there is no ramp to get in. May be difficult to for anyone in a wheel chair.

Prices have gone up since covid, but still got the best deal for sandwiches in the area. The food tastes great too.

Fresh ingredients. Incredibly fast service. Great portion sizes. Cheap prices. What more could you ask?

Excellent subs! Ordered ahead, and they were ready right on schedule. Also, the large is gigantic 🤯

As good as it gets for a lunch sub, and I've had many of them and it's all fantastic. There's a reason why this place draws a crowd consistently.

Great sandwich place with great prices. Chicken salad, roast beef were both great- really bargain prices for the sandwich! Great place for tourists too who want a good sandwich, get the hots on your sandwich!

Awesome chicken salad sandwich!

Best Italian sub I've ever had. Really, really delicious sandwiches. All of the ingredients were fresh and tasty, and the service is very quick. Also, it's affordable! I highly recommend this place.

The real deal!. This place is the real deal. Loud, barking, in-your-face Bostonians take your order and take no crap. The cafe serves up gourmet, made-to-order sandwiches and salads, but know what you want before you reach the front of the queue or you are toast. Frenetic pace and about a million people working behind the counter, each with one specific duty.

Grilled sandwiches are ready by the time you've finished ordering. Their "small" sub is the size of a Subway footlong. The large sub (which a bloke sat next to us scarfed down in record time) is twice that size. Everything is affordable and high quality, their freshly baked bread is amazing, and the atmosphere electric. Not for the faint-hearted.

The bread was still warm. Holy cow. A phenomen sandwich and a sparkling crew behind the counter! Come here!!

The State Street Sandwich is awesome!. The prosciutto, the fresh bread, vine-ripened tomatoes, fresh basil and balsamic vinegar dressing make this the best sandwich in Boston - better than anything in the North End. Great prices, too.

Fresh and fast. While you wouldn't think a sandwhich shop could be THAT much better than the rest, this one is! The proof is the long line during lunch and the many workers behind the counter. You must try this place. The meats are high quality and actually flavorful. The ham in particular has a hint of honey maple I think. The breads are fresh out of the oven and still warm when you're eating it. All ingredients are fresh. Ever taken a bite of an unripened tomato and it ruined your sandwhich because you had to dig it out and get mayo and mustard on your hands? Well, that won't happen at Al's. Literally everything is top quality, right down to the tomatoes on your sandwhich. I go there on nice days when I can take my sub to a Faneuil Hall park bench. People have come up to me and asked where I got my sandwhich.. it looks THAT good!!

Al’s is a go to favorite of people who work in the Financial District – it’s been around for over 10 years. Al’s is a family run business, his mom is the cashier at this location and various other members are involved in his other cafes. Al’s has great subs for a low price and the subs are huge! You frequently hear, ‘that’s a small’ Going into Al’s always makes my heartbeat speed up. The place is fast paced, I’ll admit, sometimes I get a little nervous when I go, so I decide what I want ahead of time. Stand to the right if you want a cold sub and pay on the left after you get your sub. If you want a hot sub, stand to the left and place your order. Al’s has me in and out in under 3 minutes. I grabbed an Italian sub – the rolls are great, warm and crusty on the outside and soft on the inside! Great sub, fresh ingredients all for $6.50, and add a soda and chips for $1.50. Stop in and try one if you haven’t already. Al’s State Street Cafe 112 State St. Boston, MA http://www.alscafes.com/
