Review Mike's City Diner - Boston

A bustling morning with a great atmosphere. The portions are generous and beautifully presented. I particularly enjoyed the French toast! It has a rich cereal aroma, a fluffy and soft texture, and the maple syrup pairing is fantastic! Highly recommended! The waffles, on the other hand, are just average.

The wait staff were awesome! There was a bit of a wait to be seated, but well worth it. The brunch menu had so much to choose from. We had pictures taken with the wait staff. We DEFINITELY will be returning again soon!

I love the diner atmosphere. Portions were nicely sized. The pastrami was nice and tender. Although I like my coleslaw slightly on the sweet size, the coleslaw wasn't too bad. Had a very lovely crunch to it. I would go again and try other food items. Bit by the look of the plates passing by me, didn't seem like there was any "bad" menu item.

The food is great. Pancakes are huge and delicious. Portions are shareable especially the pancakes n French toast. The space is a bit tight.

If you follow me then you know I love a good diner. Mike's was good and I'd go again. I ordered breakfast to eat in and some tips and chicken to go. My eggs were perfect, bacon soft just the way I like it. Homefries were good but could have used some more seasoning. Pancakes were odd and disappointing. They were big and golden so I was initially excited. Then it cut it and took a bite. I almost thought it was not cooked right but the waitress assured me it was. The pancake was very heavy and dense. I've never had a pancake like that and did not like it. The steak tips and chicken entree I ate for dinner. Had enough leftover for breakfast today. Steak tips flavorful and chicken was nice and juicy. I'd definitely go again. As I sat there and the staff passed by with other orders everything looked so good. Huge portions for sure. Friendly staff. No parking available. Must park on street.

Classic American diner with some upscale menu options (Duck confit hash) near Massachusetts Ave on Washington St. A popular local favorite and its easy to see why with the friendly staff and great food with generous portions and a welcome change to many of the dining options in the South End. I had the Reuben with onion rings, pickle, and some coffee. The Reuben is served on perfectly grilled dark Rye bread that has a nice crisp to it but isn't hard. The real star of this sandwich though is the corned beef which it is loaded with. It is lighter on the kraut than I would have preferred, but that is personal taste. The onion rings were crispy (again without being hard) and were piled high. The pickle is more of a brined cucumber and that cucumber flavor really comes through. The coffee was robust in flavor compared to many you find in dining establishments. Total bill was $25 (minus tip). Overall, a great place for breakfast or lunch and I'll definitely be back!

Had the chicken and waffles for brunch here at Mike's City and overall I thought it was really good. The chicken was well breaded and tender, was easy cutting with a butter knife. The waffle was a bit soft, wished it was crispier and would've been easier to pick up with a fork. Regardless, it was still delicious. The service was pretty great, got the food pretty fast and the staff was really accommodating. I'd recommend this place, definitely top in my list for chicken and waffles. Can't wait to try more items on their menu.

Stopped by Mike’s City dinner for a late brunch on the weekend. It was busy with a line out the door but turn over is quick and staff work hard to get folks seated inside and comfortable. The food was hot and fresh and quick to arrive after ordering. I really enjoyed my chicken and waffles and found them prepared perfectly. Would recommend and stop by again next time I’m in the area.

Evreytime I go there,I'm satisfied and so is my family. Very nice sized portions, and the food has flavor. Prices are what they are. Do enjoy your life, and your food.

Local diner featured on Triple D. It’s a bit out of the way from touristy spots, so you know that it really is a local gem. Came here around noon and the line was long, but somehow we only waited for about 15 minutes. The staff will put your name down on a list along with your party size. Indoor dining only. Credit cards are now accepted. There’s one single occupant restroom by the kitchen. It’s a kid-friendly spot. Portions are huge, so you may considering sharing. The food was delicious. The clam chowder was probably the best I’ve ever eaten in Boston, as there was some sort of thyme/rosemary hint in the soup that added some extra nuance. We got the corned beef hash with our eggs over easy, home fries, and rye toast (pre-buttered). We also got the fried chicken dinner which came with your choice of two sides - we got green beans and fries. The fries were golden and the chicken was super crispy. Service was nice but on the slow side. Overall, a good casual spot when you’re feeling hungry and are wanting some comfort diner food.

we went for brunch on saturday and there was a bit of a line but it went quickly. the place is small but super reasonably priced and the portions were huge! i wanted french toast at first, but saw "the pilgrim" on the menu and it reminded me of one of my favorite sandwiches from capriottis called "the bobby" so i had to go for it, and it did not disappoint! I totally recommend coming here for a classic diner experience.

100% recommend. Incredible service and a great setting for that authentic diner experience. The portions are ginormous. Just a side portion of pancakes was enough for one person. And it wasn't all about size, the quality was incredible too. This really is a must visit if you are in Boston

Incredible amount of food for the price. I had my 'emergency room' meal at about 11am. I'm set for the day with that haha. Friendly staff and the place is spotless.

Great food and very generous portions. Definitely shareable plates.

Diego omelet and Homemade corned beef hash and eggs. SO GOOD!! We walked 2 miles to get there, and it was worth it.

Food was great. My steak was cooked just perfect. Servers could have been a little more attentive. Atmosphere was nice as well. Will definitely go back.

HOME RUN! The rare 5 star review. And totally deserved, on a consistent basis. This is the breakfast Eating experience you must add to your “did it” list. Giant portions, every breakfast item you want to choose from. Rapid and attentive service, and you feel like you are in a local “one of a kind” place on the corner, better to walk to, but parking is around, just make sure you can parallel park! Get here and enjoy. Ps, not just for breakfast!

We went with a group of friends to have breakfast, we wait around 30 minutes before we got our table. They could improve their steak but the rest was good. Stuff great, really lovely! I would come back here if a visit Boston again.

An American Breakfast

No frills, noisy, crowded and cash only. Perfect. Anyone outside of the South End, Boston or the U.S. wonders what a true American breakfast experience is, this is it. Interesting side note: still the only legitimate way to ease a hangover.

A favorite of South Boston with “Huge Portions, Great Food,” Mike’s Diner has been pleasing the local populace for years with diner-style favorites, a recent look showing the food to be consistent with similar spots in elsewhere, no one item particularly ‘standout’ though everything was well priced with service and line-cooks that exemplify what it takes to stay relevant for so long.

The sort of place with a laminated menus of offerings, some no more elaborate than eggs and toast while others get a bit more innovative without reinventing the wheel, entrance to Mike’s City Diner is likely to be met by a wait for any arriving after 8am on weekends and with specials written on a small blackboard the decision process is expedited, coffee and water continuously refilled with dishes arriving no more than fifteen minutes later.

Tightly packed at tables, the entirety of the space probably not advisable for seating of more than fifty at most, those looking for a bit more room are encouraged to sit at the bar on unbacked stools and bearing in mind a cash-only sales policy the warning of big plates should make all but the most hungry diners consider an approach focused on sharing, the housemade muffins not particularly enormous but delicious after a brief grilling.

Celebrated for three things, the Pilgrim Sandwich unavailable before 11am on Weekends but the other two unquestionably worth an order, plates all arrived simultaneously to quickly flood the small four-top and although the daily special pancakes were indeed good with rich notes of buttermilk they simply could not stand up to either the side of crispy Turkey Hash or the full-sized French Toast that sees the outside griddled golden while the center remains soft and custard-laden with the option to order pure Maple syrup offered at a supplementary charge.

Pretty neat place. You should know it's cash only (there is an ATM inside) and weekends is breakfast only so no turkey dinner unless you can make it Mon-Fri before 3PM. Also, no soda on tap so it's can drinks if you order soda. French toast was great!

I'm so confused with the ratings. I love a good diner just like the next person however the food was grossly overpriced and it ended up in the trash. Just plain gross. Wedge salad with chicken kabob (actually overly salty chunks of chicken) - $13.86. I'm sure you will chance it due to high ratings, choose your food wisely. Still feeling mad at myself for wasting money and my lunch hour.

This place is everything you'd want it to be for a diner style breakfast place - friendly staff, laid back atmosphere and good food. Oh, and lots of food too!

From what I've read, Mikes is always busy and this morning was no exception. We had a brief wait for a table but it was worth it. Everyone in the group enjoyed their breakfast, which was hot fresh and fast. Big portions and well prepared. The cost was reasonable as well - about $60 for a party of five. May try to get back here again once more on this trip!

This place is so good. Watch out because it's really popular and there is almost always a line out the door, especially on the weekends. It's a really neat, little diner in the middle of the South End with a friendly staff and delicious food. The prices are reasonable. I'll definitely be back.
Pork Chop
Standard American Diner. We showed up around 10:30pm for breakfast and there was a line up to the door. The line moved quick as the staff moved tables in and out. We asked for the table for two near the front corner window and were obliged with a smile. We quickly ordered the Burrito stuffed with Hash, Eggs and Cheese. I asked for hot sauce and was promptly handed a bottle for my burrito. My wife ordered the Home Made Hash and Eggs and enjoyed it as well. I would agree with anyone about the disposition of the staff, they aren't overly talkative and smiles may be hard to come by, but they get the job done and with efficiency. Prices are decent and the food was very good. I would go back again.

Atrocious First Experience in Mike's City Diner. Dear Readers:

We recently visited Mike’s City Diner for the first time. Unfortunately, this was the worst Restaurant experience in U.S.A. We'll be specific.

Prior to our visit, we logged on to Mike’s City Diner website and selected 3 items from the "Dinner" menu. We then showed-up to Mike’s City Diner. Our experience deteriorated from the start. Female Hostess serving our table was very gloomy, rude and unfriendly.

We planned to order 3 items from the "Dinner" menu posted on the website. But, the Hostess told us that we could only order from the "Breakfast" menu. "Breakfast" at 2:00 PM? Unfortunately, we were greatly disappointed by the limited options. Suddenly, the impatient Hostess sniped: "I've got many customers here. Just order something!" We quickly picked "Homemade Hash & Egg" with side-order of Pancakes.

The order arrived. Here's what we received:

* Hash was over-fried / burnt and cold.
* Turkey meat was cold and tasted flat.
* Pancakes were cold.
* A few hours later, we had stomachache.

Prior to departing the Diner, we informed the Female Manager about our negative experience. But, the woman only said "Sorry" and left.
Over the past 3 months, we made several calls and sent multiple emails to the Mike's City Diner Owner, Mr. Hajj. But to this day, Mr. Hajj has refused to do anything about this. We will never return to Mike's City Diner.

The food is good and consistant. The staff can be blunt and not take any lip from the customers but I like it. I walk in and I am remembered. I will be asked if I want my tea as usual and if I order something I usually don't they are surprised. I feel comfortable there and I intend to go back and bring my family and co-workers with me.

Comfy neighborhood hangout. You get the feel of the neighborhood at Mike's with the small dining area, breakfast counter and old-time diner accoutrements. This place is hopping, and your food comes fast. Make your own omelette or try the walnut pancakes. Definitely a relaxing, comfortable way to start your day in Boston.

Good breakfast. Large servings at reasonable prices. Great atmosphere

This place was great!! Got corned beef hash - TONS of food. Couldn't eat 1/2 of it!

Great food at a great price! Friendly people happy to serve massive plates of food for your enjoyment! Just be sure you have cash...

Huge delicious portions!. Great food, and huge portions for cheap! Sometimes there can be a bit of wait though.

Overrated. I've only been here once so i don't feel my experience and review is fair until i go back again, and i will, because it's convenient to where i am. the reason i gave it only 3 stars is because i ordered an omelette and they just stuffed the freaking thing with bacon, ham, peppers, etc. great that they gave me so much food but i don't want a humongous omelette that just falls apart when i cut into it cuz there's too much crap. it also only tasted okay and not great. the home fries were also just okay. it lacked some flavor and the toast could be crispier.

the service was great though. our waitress was very nice and friendly and checked on us often. i hope my experience next time will be better.

Mike’s is clean and homey. A classic no frills or kitsch diner. Black and white and checks. Comfy, padded, armless chairs and tables. No banquettes. Banquette seating takes away some of the versatility a place has to seat parties of different sizes. The busy kitchen is visible from the seating area. The restaurant’s various and many accolades are posted everywhere. President Clinton has been by.

The texture of the buttermilk pancakes was a bit mushy, but they smelled and looked great.

The turkey hash was a bit soggy, but eggs were cooked to perfection.

Mike's City Diner is known for their turkey platters, complete with the sides you expect on Thanksgiving, but we were there for breakfast. Given this, I opted for the Corned Beef Hash and Eggs ($7.50) and my wife had the sausage and eggs. Our food came out quickly and looked like typical breakfast fare. Me corned beef hash had a good texture to it and was not mushy. It was seasoned well with just the right amount of salt. I had to add butter and sugar to my grits for flavor, but it was to be expected and worked out fine. The eggs, scrambled, were cooked perfectly and also had plenty of flavor. Overall I was very happy with my food. I cannot see taking the cab ride back to Mike's i

Sometimes when you are planning a trip you see places on a map, and think they are pretty close. Then you get to the city, and you find out that they are not as close as they seem. Once I got the lay of the land, I knew it was going to be a little bit of a journey to get from Cambridge to the South End, but I also had a feeling it was going to be worth the trip, and it was. The object of our quest was Mike's City Diner. I had of course seen this place on the show Diner's, Drive Ins, and Dives. From the show I learned that this place is known for big servings and turkey dishes. Unfortunately, we were here on Saturday, and they only serve breakfast on weekends. So, no turkey dinner was coming my way, so I had to adjust my order. We made it to Mike's at about noon. There was a line almost out the door. A very good sign that there was good food ahead.. This diner is run by a guy named Jay, who we had the pleasure of meeting while we were h

I'm always looking for a new breakfast spot to try out, even though I never really want something too complicated for my first meal of the day. I want simple, satisfying, savory food - and if I can forgo the cutlery, all the better… which is why I ordere
