Review Modern Pastry Shop - Boston

Partha Jyoti Das
It was good But didn’t find the crazy taste for what people are waiting in the line. I had puff cream It was not that tasty But I must say the portion was good and they have for sure other delicious items. Cookies are good too. The best part is it is not that expensive compared to what they are selling. A variety of packaged cookies. Service was good but they only accept cash.

Quaint little shop that instantly draws you in with views of their desserts through the glass. Their desserts looked mouthwatering. So many that I wanted to try but didn’t get a chance to. This was my first experience eating a cannoli and it was eye opening. They make them fresh to order which is different than other shops nearby. You can customize, and while it overall is less options, it’s worth it considering it’s made fresh the moment you order it. It’s one of those places you have to try if you’re visiting Boston.

I've been lucky enough to stop in here a few times over the years when I'm in town. It's is a reliable as the bedrock the North End is built on. This is hands down some old school Italian pastries and cookies. You could throw a dart blindfolded here, and hit something delicious. I brought back $160 worth of stuff to New York last weekend, and no one was disappointed. Cannoli's, just do it. Cupcakes were insane, the "Hostess" is a time machine, the Peanut Butter and Chocolate had light cake, and sweet, dense frosting without being cloying. The Boston Cream cupcake was also light and balanced, a great interpretation of a classic. Cake slices, the Napoleon was sturdy and crunchy. As with everything we had, it well balanced in terms of the right level of sweetness. Chocolate Mousse cake was just crazy good. Cookies - get yourself some mixed butter cookies, there are some old school varieties in here that you just don't find out in the wild anymore. The pistachio macaroons are worth all the hype, and the price. An incredible texture and flavor. The French Macaroons are also worth every cent. The sprinkled birthday cake and peanut butter ones were the favorites. Thanks for setting us up with some amazing tree trimming treats.

We came here specifically for the cannoli and weren’t disappointed with the trip. The service could have been quicker but we put this down to the place being so popular with locals and tourists. You need to swing by if you come to see Boston :-)

Quick Summary Made to order cannoli bakery that is a major tourist hub. CASH ONLY!! Came here on a Monday at 2pm and waited about 30 minutes (line was out the door and about 10 people deep from the door) Food- 5 stars I ordered the chocolate dipped cannoli with traditional ricotta and chocolate chips. The cannoli was fantastic and a perfect portion. They also boxed it up nicely like a present as well. Service / line- 5 stars No frills, fast service. It did take about 30 minutes to get my order despite coming on an off hour Bottom Line The cannoli is fantastic and it's worth visiting Modern Pastry. Is it worth a long wait? Probably not, but definitely worth trying if you're around the area or have some time to kill

If you’re looking for one of the best Italian bakeries in the North End, you have to stop by Modern Pastry! I promise the wait is worth it and you won’t be disappointed! Modern Pastry has been a staple in Boston since 1930! While there are a fair amount of tourists, it’s also loved by locals. It’s one of my favorite bakeries/pastry shops in Boston. Modern has an enormous selection of delectable treats for every sweet tooth! You’ll find classics like tiramisu, fruit tarts, eclairs, carrot cake, chocolate ganache cake, crème brûlée, key lime tarts, and so much more! You’ll also find a solid selection of Italian-style pastries like limoncello, chocolate mousse cake, rum savoy, napoleon, cassatina, rum baba, and so many more. The selection is truly outstanding. If you like cannolis, they have you covered. You can have it your way. You’re able to choose the filling and toppings. I’m not a huge cannoli fan, so I can’t speak to how those taste. They’re filled fresh-to-order. If you’re looking for something more simple, they do offer a solid selection of frosted cupcakes, Italian butter cookies, black/white cookies, macaroons, and French Macarons. You’ll also find an incredible selection of fine truffles and chocolates. They have homemade chocolate bars, peanut butter cups, truffles, pecan/cashew clusters, and much more! I found it to be a bit pricy for the homemade chocolate, but I am sure it is very good! You’ll find seasonal specialities, like the Pumpkin Cheesecake. They also have a small selection of canned/jarred goods, candy, and more that is imported from Italy. We decided to stop by to grab dessert after having dinner in Copley Square. We arrived around 7:30 PM on a Friday and the line was literally into the street. However, the owner does a great job of moving the line and ensuring an orderly process. I waited roughly 15-minutes to get in to browse and make my purchase. The line moves quickly, so I’d suggest looking at the menu online PRIOR to going. It’ll help move things along and you’ll have an idea of what they have. The selection is massive and it’s easy to miss things. I know we missed the Pumpkin Cheesecake as it was just so jam packed. They do offer a small seating area. However, be aware it is for paying patrons only that are dining in. This means they’re eating the pastries on glass plates and having cappuccino in proper glassware. They have a solid cappuccino and espresso, as any good Italian bakery should! You can take it to-go, or enjoy it on-site. The night we went they had two old-school Italian musicians playing for customers while they enjoyed their pastry and cappuccino. It was a really nice touch. They also have a “secret” underground bar and restaurant below the bakery. I have yet to check it out, but it was slammed the night we were there. A ton of college students. Be sure to bring your ID if you plan to go down there, they do card everyone. I’d highly recommend Modern to tourists and locals alike. The selection of pastries and sweets is unmatched. The trip to the North End is always worth it and we ALWAYS stop by Modern for dessert after a big dinner. Be aware it is CASH ONLY. I did not see an ATM on site, so I strongly suggest bringing cash! Don’t let the line scare you off. It moves fast and it’s worth the wait!

My tour guide recommended Modern over Mikes for cannolis, so I did what any good Italian would do and tried both! Mikes was bigger and good but overall not nearly as flavorful as Modern. Moderns employee were welcoming, helpful and even smiled. Modern has my vote and recommendation!!!

Modern Pastry located at 257 Hanover St, Boston, MA 02113 has truly amazing Pastries!!! Boston’s best - I’ve been to several and this clearly is the best one I’ve had here. Photos show the deliciousness. I sampled several of their works - from a Hostess Cupcake copy to Eclair. Worth the trip and line wait! Cash only.

Must see in downtown Boston!! Whether you are a sweets person or not, you have to go to this Italian bakery in Little Italy in Boston! I am not usually a dessert girl, but I do enjoy some desserts and looking at pretty pastries. We happened up Modern Bakery while walking around Boston Friday night. The line to get in was all the way up the street and wrapped around the building! We decided the next morning, we would go early and see what all the fuss was about. Modern is a very quaint, cozy, Italian bakery and pastry shop that is obviously family run and operated. It’s cash only, so be prepared for that! We ordered a piece of the tiramisu and strawberry shortcake. The desserts were so incredibly fresh and delectable. 10/10! I know see why the line was wrapped around the building!! Highly recommend trying this authentic bakery in Boston! They had so much to choose from, and also served espressos and different coffees!

Beautiful dessert and pastry shop. Very reasonably priced. Beware- cash only so come prepared! We tried their tiramisu and cannolis and both were perfect after a lunch at one of the Italian restaurants and strolling through the streets. They’re mostly to-go, but do have a section where you can order table service.

This seems like an old school place to get some tasty pastries. It feels like you are walking into a shop that's been around for a while. You order at the counter and also pay (cash only). We tried a cannoli here and liked it. It wasn't too sweet. I liked that they have you an option to build your own cannoli.

GET THE STINKING LIMONCELLO CAKE. WHATEVER YOU DO! ITS AMAZING. Also the canolis are pretty darn good. To me it's a toss up between Mike and modern pastry. A few more canolis options at Mike's but they don't have a cake like the LIMONCELLO cake. It's majestic

Maybe a little irrational exuberance about Modern Pastry. It’s really good and I’m super happy about their gluten free options. The lines and the service quickly turn this from a 5 star to a 4 star place. But the food is good. The GF cannoli was outstanding. The lobster tail that my family got received high praise. It’s beautiful too. However, the GF chocolate whoppie was forgettable and I ended up throwing away after just 1 bite. “Not worth the calories.”

When I tell you to try the Pistachio Martini, trust me on this! OMG, I've been thinking about them for quite a while now. The food is good too. The employees here were also wonderful!

There is generally a line to get in. You pick your filling and topping. I got the ricotta & pistachio. It was amazing. Best Cannoli I have ever had.,❤️

This place right here all I have to say is come visit, this place is where it's happening. They have great staff the staff are nice, they greet you with a smile and they want to help you. Things are fresh here the only thing that I was disappointed about is that they didn't have a Boston pie here they had a Boston cupcake but I went on and received it and ate it and it was super good but I was still disappointed because I wanted to taste the pie and you also have to get the lobster tail with the four types of cream inside it is so delicious so delicious so definitely stop by

Of the three major cannoli places, Modern is my absolute favorite! While there is limited flavor choices here, these cannolis are smoother and tastes better than anywhere else. There’s also a good variety of other beautiful pastries to try. Remember that Modern is cash only, so plan accordingly.

Modern Pastry was a beautiful bakery! The desserts that I tried were awesome. I enjoyed the strawberry cheesecake and the macarons which were all full of flavor. I highly recommend the birthday cake and raspberry flavors. One recommendation is to not forget your cash as that is the only form of payment accepted.

Saturday afternoon wait was about 10 minutes despite a seeming long line out the door. Lots of groups ordering together and fast service. Compared to Mikes, this place seems like less of an unorganized crowd. For cannolis, you choose your option for the shell, filling, and topping. I got the chocolate dipped shell, ricotta filling, and pistachio topping. $5. Cash only
