Review Chen's Express - Birmingham

I like the Crestline Village location. Friendly Staff, Clean restaurant, good food. There's a lunch menu from 11 am until 3 pm. Very reasonable prices and alot of food. Door Dash Customers love to order here almost everyday. So get ready to be beyond full 🌝.

Walked in and ordered takeout. Food was ready in less than fifteen minutes, hot and fresh. I'm pretty picky about my Chicken Lo Mein and I enjoyed their version quite a bit. I would recommend this restaurant.

Ate here for lunch. The server was kind and gave great suggestions when I asked for help as I was overwhelmed with the menu. The food arrived relatively quick and was so delicious.

Worst food ever! I ordered broccoli and rice and my broccoli was full of oil water and bugs.. I saw more than 3 bugs when opened my broccoli and I threw it away. Waste of money . Will never go back.

I ordered food to go from this establishment. The Hot and Sour soup tasted what sewage smells like. Completely inedible. Got Vegetable fried rice but it was like ‘Where’s Waldo’ to find a few broccoli florets, 4-5 tiny snow peas and about 1/4 of a scrambled egg. The Kung Pau shrimp was a 2 - 3 out of 10. And I had to pay extra sauce. I have never ever paid for extra sauce, hot mustard and tiny packets of soy sauce. But I spent almost $7 for the sauces, which ended up being only 1/2 of what I ordered. The best thing was the sticky white rice. It is a HUGE chain. It was the worst Chinese food that I have ever had. I wonder if the people who like it so much have weak senses of taste. And, lastly, they are ripping diners off, as everything is way over priced because of their location.

THE. BEST. Chinese food in Bham. Lots of these negative reviews have nothing to do with the food - if you want absolutely delicious Chinese food this is the place to get it. Szechuan chicken is my favorite.

Excellent service, quality of food, and preparation for takeout! We are very selective where we eat and Chen Express gets tops marks from us. Our favorites are chicken sizzling rice (for a healthy option!)

the dishes had a fishy taste which is something I hate. If I order beef or chicken I expect to have NO FISH taste NON  I will not order again unless I know they will be more considerate

I have been using Chen Express for years. They are very clean, the service is good, and the serving sizes are more than adequate.  I love their take on fried rice.  Being from up North, Chinese food here is very different.  This is the closest I have found to real Chinese food. Moo Shu of any kind rocks!  We will definately use again and again.

I have been getting delivery from Chen Express for about 4 years since moving to Birmingham. I love this place! The delivery was so fast when I lived in Highland Park that we could not figure out how they did it. I was almost as if they had to cook it in the car on the way to our home! We have since moved but delivery is still quick. Food is always hot and fresh. I often get "Chicken with Black Bean Sauce". It's just absolutely delicious. Several times I have called and been told by new employees that they don't have it and that it's not on the menu, but they do still make it for me after asking the owner. I know this may seem simple and lackluster but the "Won-ton soup" is absolutely the most divine won-ton soup I have ever tasted anywhere in the country let alone Birmingham. Words can't describe this simple perfection. It has made me well when I was sick twice now and it does wonders for a sore throat and when you need something light on your tummy. We eat a lot of Chinese cuisine as it's our favorite. We go out to eat at several other sit down dine in restaurants that are excellent, however, for delivery food and portion to dollar value it's just hard to beat Chen Express! We feel blessed to have it in our neighborhood.

UGH!. Wasn't sure what we wanted to have so we ordered the Appetizer Platter. It was terrible! Neither of us could eat it so the entire thing went in the trash.

Holy Runs.... I stop in yesterday for quick bite to eat. Before I could make it hope I had to make U-Turn and go to Hospital. They say I have E Coli. Please Please Please. BE careful!

Sesame Chicken. Best Chinese place I've had. Great price for your buck too.

Changing policy?. I order from this place all the time. Tonight they told me I'd have to order more food to meet the minimum for my work address. They have never done this before and I've been ordering from them for a while.... Oh well. I'll just not order from them anymore.

Usually Good But Not The last Two Times. We get delivery from here 2-3 times a month. Until now we haven't had any problems, food has always been good, delivery has always been quick. I always order the same thing, last time I ordered they left out a couple of things. The next time we ordered my wife explained what had happened and placed our usual order. When I got my food they didn't add the two things left out of the previous order and the same two things in this order was so full of cooking oil and had such a terrible taste that they were inedible. I don't know if this was just a coincidence or not. Usually this is my favorite part of the meal and they have never been this way before, so I have my suspicions.

Love this place so much! I always go to Chen express with my family members, the food is so good! Also, they offer free soup during lunch time if you dining in. The servers take very good care of us, Try to dining in there!

I was nervous ab ordering delivery here, but im glad i did. we ordered the cashew chicken and orange beef and OMG. it was at my door in less than 15mins, the kid was sweet, and the food was great. and boiling hot! literally- i burnt my mouth! i am very impressed and very satisfied and will def. order from here again! thank u, chen express for your under promise(of 35-40mins) and your over-delivery! god bless-

Love, Love, Love, HATE. I have been back since the review below and the cashier issue appears to have been fixed. Great food, good price. I recommend.<br/>------------------<br/>Chen Express is one of my favorite places and I often go and order take out for a special weekend meal. They have an extensive menu, moderate prices and the portions are huge. They also package the food very well for take out and the leftovers are great the next day. <br/><br/>Great food, reasonable price, so it pains me to tell you that Chen Express has made the worst mistake that any business can make in one of the villages of Mountain Brook. They hired a local youth to run the register. <br/><br/>Yes, you will be "welcomed by one of Mountain Brooks very own... obnoxious, self-centered, entitled, texting little bastards. They don't care about you or your order, they just cannot believe they are being forced to do the dirtiest of the four letter words... WORK! <br/><br/>I'll give them a couple more tries, maybe they will fire this little S _ _ T in time to save their business. Worth trying, make your own judgement about the cashier.

Worst Experience Ever!!!!. I had the worst experience of my life at Chen Express in Mountain Brook tonight!! For starters, it took 10 minutes for the 'new girl' to get my order placed. After waiting another 15 minutes (and after numerous customers had come in after me and gotten their orders before me), I finally received my order - IT WAS WRONG! Not wanting to waste anymore of my time on another wrong order, I asked for my money back and left. Once in my car, I called the restaurant to speak with a manager to express my disappointment. After speaking briefly with them, the manager cursed me, told me they were too busy to talk to me, then hung the phone up in my face. I am still in shock at the treatment I received. I will NEVER visit this restaurant again!

Ordered delivery from here for the 1st time last night. General Two's was tasty and fresh. Crab rangoon tasted fresh and more quality to it than most Chinese places. Delivery was quick, price was right! Our new favorite for Chinese delivery.

Delivery was quick and my food was correct and steaming hot. I will definitely order from Chen Express again.

Good food BUT...... There are two main issues I have with this restaurant. #1 - No website and no online menu (fortunately there is Urbanspoon). #2 - They will not divide delivery orders into separate checks, which is a problem when ordering at work at the nearby hospital. Not to mention they don't accept American Express, but I don't hold that against them. We will probably be ordering from Shangri-La next time.

Great!. Hands down best chinese in birmingham. we live in the avondale/crestwood area and they deliver from crestline village. super fast, great food. perfect for a sunday afternoon!!

WARNING WARNING WARNING. I called in a delivery order that included a large egg drop soup. Upon getting it inside, we discovered it was hot and sour soup. My wife called to report the mishap and was informed that I said hot and sour. Her reply, "Let me put my husband on the phone so you can tell him what HE said." I took the phone and reiterated I had plainly ordered egg drop soup. I was asked to hold and I suppose the manager took the phone. She offered a free egg-drop soup with my next order or (you may want sit down) I could SWITCH the soup I had for an egg-drop soup....really...SWITCH? I suppose on the terrible assumption that I hadn't opened it. It would have, travelled from the restaurant, into my home (where they have NO idea what could have been done with it), and then back to the store, where one could just as terribly assume that they would throw it away rather than re-sell it... Thankfully, the driver refused to take it. But what if he hadn't?

They said they would not deliver because they didn't deliver over 3 miles, and we're too far. We are 2.9 mi away

I just got some food there. I had to pay at least $30 bucks or I couldnt get my food!

Great Chinese food. It drives me crazy that they won't deliver (I'm just across the line to the North side of town) but the food is great. Crab rangoons are delicious, mandarin chicken (ex. spicy) is awesome. All around good stuff.

Love it!. This place is amazing and you get so much food for the price! I can make 2-3 meals out of an order of Moo Shu Chicken and a large hot and sour soup. They always get the order right and it is always piping hot when they bring it to our door. My husband and I always get it delivered, so I can't say how the resturaunt is. We have tried the Lo Mein(chicken and pork), Moo Shu Chicken, Chicken Teriyaki appetizer, Crab Rangoons, General Tso Chicken, Hot and sour soup and Sesame Chicken. Every thing has always been amazing. Don't think twice about ordering from Chen Express! Yummmm!

Unhappy Nurse. I work at a local hospital on the southside of birmingham. We order chen express and my co-worker paid for her dinner with a check, and I attempted to write a check as well. I was told I could not write a check, however he aloud my co worker to write her check. Only would accept cash from me. I'm black and she is white. Very unhappy nurse

Wonderful Food. I ordered the Cashew Shrimp and Crab Rangoons (appetizer) and it was spectacular. The best thing about it was that I got it delivered and within 20 minutes of placing the order, it was at my door. I will whole-heartedly tell friends about this place.

Best chinese I've had in a long time.... Incredible! delivery took a while but it was well worth it! we ate special fried rice and chicken lo mein and it was incredible! I want to try the hot & sour soup next time!

Great food. Very fresh.. I go to Chen Express a few times a month, and always have a good meal. It's very quick and always comes out piping hot. They don't use any MSG in anything, which is always a plus. The wait staff is very friendly too.

Cheap, tasty, and delivers.. What more does one need? Not as authentic as Mr. Chens, but very good Chinese (or, what most of us have come to call "Chinese") served quickly. As other reviewers have noted, the price point here is also hard to argue with. If you live within delivery range, you are lucky indeed,

Good, Cheap Chinese. Chen Express is an excellent place to pop in for lunch without breaking the bank. They definitely do more delivery business than eat-in, but if you are in the area, and are hankering for quick bite, then give them a go.<br/><br/>Gluten free eaters won't be disappointed with the lunch menu. The staff are willing to accommodate and even took the time to highlight every gluten free dish on the lunch menu for me.
