Review O Sushi - Birmingham

The love boat was amazing! Everything was so beautifully put together and the fish was nice and fresh. It was our first time coming and we were not disappointed. Definitely recommend

I usually order for delivery from O Sushi. I have ordered more times than I care to admit. Although there is a lot of competition across Japanese restaurants here in central AL, O Sushi is consistently one of, if not the best. Ordering sushi is oftentimes not great however I have never once had a bad experience with O Sushi even though I almost always get sushi. It's always fresh, delicious, and great portions. They are more expensive than a lot of the competitors but are worth it from my experience.

The sushi was very good and the portions are large.

Great food and great service. I'm not a connoisseur of sushi, but we had a variety of makizushi and nigiri, and everything was delicious. My favorite was the tuna nigiri. I thoroughly enjoyed a bottle of Snow Maiden junmai-nigori. Highly recommended if you like cloudy, cold sake.

Osushi is possibly our most favorite resturant, as we frequent at least once a week, if not twice a week sometimes. We love to visit other restaurants and try new things too, but we just keep coming back to this friendly environment and great food.

Honestly, I always love it here. Quiet, relaxed atmosphere. Great food, reasonable price for it. It's never very crowded, never too long of a wait for food or drinks. The staff is great and I've never had any trouble in all my (very many) times of coming to this restaurant. I can't find a bad word about it. Even their saké is pretty good, and I'm usually picky about it. I have plenty more photos, but these are the most recent. I recommend the crunchy shrimp roll. Happy dining!

Worst sushi I have ever eaten, very rude staff. When manager came out to ask what was wrong with sushi (tuna), he refused to listen or be told that their sushi was not tasteful or fresh. Not a good first impression, we will not be returning.

Just love the sushi here! Cannot exaggerate the high quality. The salad selection is great too. The crab cucumber salad was so fresh and juicy!

Very nice, quaint sushi restaurant in Hoover. On my numerous visits, the food and staff have been excellent. It's never extremely busy, as I think they do a brisk takeaway business.

Quiet, small sushi place. The sushi were good. We were the only 2 people in the restaurant, ate quick and left. It was ok but really nothing special.

My experience was pleasant even with my 3 year old daughter. She loved the miso soup and I loved their extensive menu. Service was good and the place was really clean. We will be back!

It was so delicious! They were very friendly when we walked in and throughout dinner. Everything was really fresh and they had Flounder Nigiri! We have been looking for Flounder at a sushi joint for years. I also enjoyed that their rolls were different from other sushi places.

Service was good but the food is only mediocre. My sushi wouldn't stay together to even pick it up. Sushi was not good at all. The soy sauce was not labeled on the tables and had dirty rings where it had been sitting in the dish. Chairs were straight backs and uncomfortable. Overall experience was unpleasant.

This restaurant is located in The Grove shopping center across from Target. I wasn't expecting much, but this is definitely one of the best restaurants for sushi in Birmingham. I would suggest trying the Summer Roll and the Firecracker Roll.

When we walked in the restaurant, we were hit with a very strong stench of musk and bleach. It was very abrasive to our senses. It seemed like our food took forever to come out, but our time may have been perceived incorrectly due to the strong odor. When we finally got our food the sushi was mushy and lacked any flavor. It didn't even taste like old fish. Just mush and nothing. The fried rice was mushy and almost paste-like. We haven't been back since.

Not impressed. Went here for the 1st time in a while and I used to love it...it has gone down hill. Service was terrible. One 1 waitress for the whole restaurant. I can almost handle it if my first bite of one of my sushi rolls didn't taste so fishy and gross that I spit it back out on the plate. I love sushi but that was bad. I didn't even finish my food because I had such I bad taste lingering. This place needs some major improvement!!

Not so good. It's our first time here, we ordered a dumpling that smells like dog/cat food and then we ordered some sushi and some of the sushi was so fishy! We are leaving this restaurant hungry and disgusted !

Sushi was very mediocre. Service was good but the quality of the sushi was very poor. It didn't have a good blend of flavors; for instance I had cream cheese added to the Eel roll (which cost an extra $1) and there was so much cream cheese I could hardly taste the eel. I had the lunch special with soup and salad and the two rolls. The soup and salad was tasty but the sushi itself was not impressive at all. It reminded me of publix sushi. It tasted ok but definitely not high quality sushi that you expect from a restaurant. Will not go back. Not worth the money spent.

Great little Sushi place. This place is a little haven. It can be crazy around Hoover with all the traffic and shopping. O Sushi is quiet and a nice room and the food is great. Sushi and Bento Boxes. Great Miso soup.

Best sushi in Birmingham! End of story... My girlfriend and I eat here EVERY TIME she is in town.. No questions asked.. Sushi is ridiculously fresh and always artfully prepared.. Awesome miso soup..Can't recommend this place enough... If you've never ate here, you don't know what your missing

Very Pleasant Surprise. I tried O Sushi today for lunch. Going to a Sushi restaurant was a new experience for me. The server was so helpful. The food was delicious and proportions very generous. The atmosphere is just lovely!! A very pleasant and enjoyable experience. I will definitely be back and recommend O Sushi to others!

Incredible!! Enjoyed a hot appetizer and their sushi combo with miso soup. Sushi was very good and such friendly servers. Was pleasantly surprised by the experience my husband and I had. The ambiance was also unexpectedly very nice, comfortable, beautiful and modern. Will DEFINITELY come back.

We went to O Sushi for the first time tonight. Neither my wife or myself are sushi aficionados, but we were craving it. We were seated quickly at a clean table. There was a good atmosphere. The waitress was very helpful and knowledgeable; informing us what masago is (fish eggs). The fried calamari appetizer was outstanding! My wife loved the Thai Roll and I enjoyed the Tempura Shrimp Roll that were part of our Maki combos. It was an overall excellent restaraunt and we plan on a return visit when we're feeling like sushi again.

Incredible! The waitress worked with the sushi chef to create a roll that I had where we used to live. It was perfect. Best sushi in B'ham out of the 7 sushi restaurants we have tried.

Decent food, awful service.. My wife, 17 month old and I went in for a Friday evening dinner. Once we were sat it took over 10 minutes for anyone to come to our table. We had to ask for menus, they were out of most wines we inquired about and it just went downhill from there. After 45 minutes we had one glass of wine, an appetizer and a fussy child. There were only five tables occupied in the restaurant. Too bad the service was so poor because our appetizer was delicious.

Had the crunchy shrimp roll and the summer roll and both were fantastic! My boyfriend ordered the triple roll and we both thought it was a little fishy but will be back again to order the other! The atmosphere was unique And service was great.

Excellent!!!. I came here with a close friend after exams to celebrate. In fact, we actually had a timer counting down the days and seconds until we came here. After enduring six hours of exams that day, we were so excited to come here.<br/><br/>After getting off the green line, we actually found this is a tiny place quite hard to find--it's inside of Target Center. The restaurant was quite empty when we arrived, so we were seated right away at<br/><br/>I loved the Auburn Roll (avocado spicy crab inside, salmon on the topped with jalapeno sauce). While the salmon was quite ordinary, the jalapeno sauce was a wonderful addition to the sushi, as it allowed the pieces to just melt in my mouth, rounding the roll off for a perfect taste. The spider maki (soft-shell crab, avocado, fish egg, cucumber with eel sauce) was still flaming hot when it was served to us, which made it so delectable, despite the fact that this roll was actually quite ordinary.<br/><br/>I definitely will go back..

Bham's Best Sushi. This is my favorite sushi in Birmingham. The key is to get the special rolls. I like the roll tide roll, fantasy roll, special roll, and auburn tiger roll. It is slightly more expensive than Surin, but less expensive than Jinsei. My only complaint is that it is far out in Hoover, and I live Downtown.

Excellent Sushi. I really enjoyed the entire O sushi experience - with friendly Atmosphere and great selection of delicious sushi rolls! Service was outstanding, and if you haven't made your visit to this restaurant yet, I encourage you to try this place out.

Great Atmosphere. My husband and I had a date night, and used a deal I got from Sharing Spree. The sushi was great, and we loved the atmosphere. Music played softly, and the decorations were very nice. We can't wait to go back!

Horrible Experience. This is the second and last time I patronize this restaurant. The service is horrible, the food mediocre. With only one other couple in the restaurant, it took 30 minutes to make 3 sushi rolls. This place is surely headed toward riun and soon to be out of business. They offer a discount via Restaurant.com but don't be tempted to use, that was my mistake. You will then be treated as a second rate customer. I will never dine here again.

Good Food and Good Service. I've been to OS 12-15 times over the last year or so and have never been disappointed. The food has always been good, but initially the service was just okay. They have improved their service (which is now terrific) to match the fresh food they serve. Sushi is the best thing they serve and the main reason to go. I will continue to support with my hard earned dollars. Good restaurant and pleasant experience. If you read my other reviews you will see I am not a shill, like some others appear to be. If you give these guys a try I don't think you will be disappointed.

Horrible Food and Service. After reading favorabe reviews on Yelp and Urbanspoon, I decided to give this a try. Unfortunately, I was mistaken. To say this place has good or excellent sushi, is like saying McDonald's has the best cheeseburger you've ever tasted. I ordered several dishes and only favored one, and even that one wasn't spectacular. <br/><br/>Ika Maruyaki: Horribly overcooked, and the Squid was not cleaned. No orignally with way too much teriyaki sauce. Tried to let our server know that it was not very good and she became irritated and started yelling in the kitchen. Did not say I'm sorry or if she could offer something better for us. That was the last time we saw her.<br/>Rainbow Naruto: Fresh and clean, but too much cucumer. Decent dish<br/>Miso soup: Tasted like it was from a can<br/>Hot girl: No flavor, warm, disgusting<br/>Thai: Could have been a decent roll, but should have had the sauce, which you can buy at a grocery store, left off<br/>Roll Tide Roll: Spicy tuna was not freshly made, Tuna on top was frozen.<br/>Hamachi and Otoro Sashimi: Cut wrong and could tell they were frozen then thawed out. Tasted like water.<br/><br/>All the Rolls were messy and unoriginal. The atmosphere was stericle and very unwelcoming. Service was terrible and once I expressed I didn't like a dish I was then ignored and did not see my server for the rest of the time. Someone else brought my food out too me. I also had to pay for what I did not eat! <br/><br/>You can find much better sushi at a grocery store and if you want amazing sushi in Bham or Alabama, you should try Jinsei. I'm very disappointed in O Sushi.

Very good sushi. My wife and I drove over 40 miles to visit and we were not disappointed. We will be back. The grilled whole squid was one of my favorites. We also had sashimi and the sizzling shrimp dinner. Everything was very good.

Fantastic, best in Bham!. Seriously amazing sushi. we ordered to pick up. We got the roll tide roll (my personal favorite), caterpillar roll, and the halloween roll. All were fresh, fanatastic, and extremely tasty. Also, we got the rainbow naruto for an appetizer and it was delicious! Great miso too, not watery at all. Absolutely love this new place! Two thumbs up and best sushi in Bham!

Worth the drive!. Tried this place thanks to a restaurant.com gift certificate and LOVED IT! I am pregnant so I avoid most sushi and was VERY impressed that the entrees were as good as they were! Most sushi places focus only on the sushi and just kindof throw together the entrees but not here! The chicken was amazing and my vegetables were fresh. The crunchy shrimp roll was the only roll I tried because it was the only cooked one my husband ordered and it was fantastic.. I was surprised to hear him say it was better than his usual favorite sushi place, he was very impressed with the quality of the meat they have. I would definately recommend trying this place, it was delicious!

So so yummy. Very cute ambiance. The summer roll, spicy shrimp roll, dumplings, ginger salad all delicious. I would eat this everyday if I could :)

Good sushi. After reading the reviews, I had to try this place, and was not disappointed. I went on an early Saturday evening and the place was almost empty, and I don't know why! The ambiance is very Japanese without being over the top. The sushi was great. I enjoyed the Roll Tide Roll, it had a good bit of heat to it, and the Louisiana Roll. If I was staying in the Birmingham area this would definitely be my sushi place.

Wasn't impressed...first and probably last time to go there. Salad tasted like it's been sitting in the fridge all nite nd was half the size of what u get at other jap. restaurants with it costing u $.50 more:-/ soup was bland, nd sushi was also half the size of what I usually get from other places..service was slow even tho we were the only ppl in the restaurant, nd waitress had a slight attitude..overall, it pretty much was a waste of money

I'm not really close to a sushi connoisseur & I'll only eat it if it's cooked. However we do eat it & enjoy what we eat. This is the best we've tried in several different states not to mention Birmingham. Its great!

Best susi in Bham. My husband and I love sushi and thought we had found a good place, but when we tried O Sushi we were blown away! First thing we noticed was the ginger was fresh pickled not the pink stuff. The fish was melt in your mouth. Husband tried the white tuna and loved it !! We also had gyoza. These are not the frozen ones you get every where else, these are fresh made.<br/><br/>Sounds like we are going back to try the Thai roll!

Fabulous. Who would have thought you would find great sushi in a strip mall! Sort of a newbie to sushi and the staff has been helpful and gracious. My husband found a dish he hadn't had since he served in the Navy and was in Japan. He was so happy. Can't wait for them to start serving wine. We will definitely be going back often.

Straight to the Top of My List!. O Sushi has gone straight to the top of my list of my favorite restaurants in Birmingham. My boyfriend and I usually go to Jinsei, but they definitely have some competition now! I decided to try O Sushi because my favorite waitress ever ("A") works there. She moved from another one of my favorite restaurants, so we just wanted to see her. I knew that the restaurant must be good if she decided to work there, but I was surprised as to just how good it was! The fish was incredibly fresh, and the creativity was out of this world! I have not been to any other sushi restaurant with rolls as creative as O Sushi. We had the Auburn Roll, Special Tropical Roll, Hot Girl Roll, and the Thai Roll. They were all delicious! We also started with a ginger salad for my boyfriend and a seaweed salad for me (both were wonderful!). Do yourself a favor and try O Sushi! They have great combination deals that won't hurt your pocket as badly some of the other great sushi places around town. You definitely get what you pay for- and more! If you go, be nice to "A"- she is the sweetest, friendliest waitress we have ever had!

Truly fresh, creative sushi. I've been a Jinsei devotee for years now and I can honestly say that the sushi here was just as fresh. Honestly, I was blown away with how good it was. I judge a sushi restaurant on raw-only offerings (anyone can make tempura shrimp tasty), and typically a variety of whitefish, hamachi, or white tuna is the deciding factor for me. Folks, O Sushi has got it right. <br/><br/>The "Thai" was my favorite of the specialty rolls we tried. The white tuna on top was to die for, and the yellowtail, masago, cilantro, and cucumber on the inside were perfectly brought together by a sweet, salty, and spicy flavor that was spot-on Thai taste (think papaya salad). It also mastered the whole "unami", savory, mouth-feel aspect that makes some food so inexplicably good. <br/><br/>Also pretty killer was the red bean ice-cream; it comes wrapped inside a thin Japanese rice cake. Born and raised in Alabama, I never had many sweets made from red beans, but had them for the first time in Hong Kong and have been obsessed since. If you've never tried this, do your taste buds a favor.<br/><br/>Needless to say, my first experience at O Sushi will not be my last. I was thoroughly impressed with everything. In addition to great food, O Sushi is lucky enough to have the best waitress in Birmingham--"A." She's as good as it gets, and she's the original reason we tried O Sushi in the first place (previously, she had been at another Hoover eatery and has always taken good care of us). Thanks A, and thanks O Sushi; we will be back soon!

Hands Down - One of BEST in Alabama. I've been to many sushi restaurants in town, from low price to high price, and this is hands down, my favorite. Fresh, tasteful, plenty, value!<br/><br/>Great atmosphere with high quality food will bring a great success to O Sushi. Must visit if you appreciate sushi!<br/><br/>Strongly recommend the Triple Roll - White Fish, Salmon, Tuna and cream cheese, flash-fried on the outside - orgasmic!<br/><br/>You cannot not visit this place if you are in Hoover!

New Japanese Restaurant O Sushi. I'd say this is the best sushi restaurant in the area by far! Sushi is fresh and well made unlike some places where the sushi is chewy. The pricing is competitive and the service is beyond friendly, can't believe they have chocolate creme brulee in dessert, that was my favorite . For a nice evening out, I would highly recommend eating here.

I've been to many sushi places in bham and this restaurant is definitely the best sushi in town, great service and awesome atmosphere. If u wanna come here u better try Aubern tiger roll!!!! It will be the best sushi u have ever had.
