Review Casa Maria Mexican Restaurant - Baton Rouge

Rogue Diner
There is a Capulet and Montague feud between this restaurant and the one across Perkins for blandest food. The queso is not flavorful; it’s thick with a couple of red dots. One strip of steak in three tacos was around 18.75 buckaroos. The food is overpriced for what is offered. They do offer fresh brewed sweetened and unsweetened tea. Our service was prompt and attentive. My review is as bland as the food.

Food was good, even though the order was not correct. Waiter either was on his 1st day or daydreaming in another galaxy. The orders were not even given to the right people at our table 3 times. Not so sure about going back again.

My boyfriend and I love this place. The atmosphere, beer, and food are wonderful, but the service is what makes this place stand out. Everyone is so kind and ready to serve you with a quickness. I highly recommend!

Consistently excellent food for a great price. Service is wonderful as well. We’ve become regulars over the years. Hard to beat.

It was my first time trying this restaurant. I love the location, which i realized after coming out of the restaurant, it is near perkins rowe cinemark. The food was AMAZING. I was craving some steak and the tacos were the perfect meal. Quality was excellent and quantity perfect 👌 the chef at this place is for sure a great one. I will be back very soon for some more chips and guac, also. Thank you! Totally recommend this place.

Solid Mexican food. The brisket burrito was killer. The queso was really great too. Looked like you could get into some trouble drinking their margs. Love the vibe. Pretty great service too.

Food is decent. Lacks flavor for me. Fajitas very little flavor. Pico De Gallo lacking. Not authentic enough. Good luck

This was my first time going to this restaurant there are a lot of things on the menu to choose from my food was very flavorful and it was worth the money my margarita was not the best but the food made up for it!

This was my first time going to this place. First of all, the service was really good. The waitress took really good care of us. The food was another thing. I ordered fish tacos. They tasted extremely fishy and I honestly could not eat them. The best part of the meal was the rice. My wife got some kind of taco dish and said it too, was just not good. With all the other good Mexican places in BR, I just can’t see us ever going back.

Been here a number of times, almost all for dinner and for the most part we have enjoyed it. As good as most other Mexican eateries in the area and pours a good margarita if you know the lay of the land. As i have said before, it is tough here on BR to get a marg just how you want it.

Decent sized dining rooms and service has never been an issue.

Enchilada, fajita and relleno are out go to.

Have not been in a while. Overdue to try them again.

The food is sub standard at best. The rice and beans had absolutely no flavor. The shells were also stale as well as the chips. The 1.5 rating is only based for it service. Wait staff was attentive and great !

It's just VERY UNBELIEVABLE that a manager would be on the server's side about cutting in front of people's turns during a slow time. I asked for a refill on my soft drink as our server was on her way to greet another table, but I did beat their turn to the punch per say. So our waitress greets the next table. Instead of getting my refill at least by then(she should have gone BEFORE she greeted the next table), she goes to the 100% OPPOSITE direction to fix a frozen margarita for one of the customers that was at the table she just greeted. Then has the GALL to come back to THEIR TABLE to hand the lady her margarita, which is cutting again. Then she goes into the kitchen, fixes the non-bar drinks(soft drinks or iced tea or water) for the other customers that are for that table behind us and brings them out altogether with our appetizer. Now that's just wrong. I couldn't LIVE with myself knowing I cut in front of someone else's turn THREE TIMES. My husband and I have tipped 25%-30% at times for good servers and have had servers get refills under a minute. It was so slow, our waitress a little later on, had time to sweep and made us sit there wait to get the check to leave, yet, the manager feels it's more efficient to not get my refill, yet, had time to sweep it was so slow. WHATEVER happened to CUSTOMER SERVICE? First off, at the very least, it's RUDE and CUTTING to get a margarita before a bar drink REGARDLESS simply because that takes more time to fix one margarita than it does for a soft drink even for that same table even. Secondly, I asked for my drink first, mine should have been made BEFORE that person at the other table simply because it was also just a soft drink. They(some of the other staff, including the manager) were too worried about doing christmas decorations over customer service, it's just unbelievable. HOW can she say it was "more efficient" for my turn when I had to wait around 4-5 minutes for a FREAKING SOFT DRINK REFILL? That's NOWHERE NEAR EFFICIENT. If it had been busy, a good server would have gone to get the soft drink for me and the other table FIRST BEFORE the margarita is what I would have done if I had been the server. The fact that it wasn't busy, that she had time to worry about sweeping tells me YES she had time to make a 100% TOTALLY SEPARATE TRIP to the kitchen to get my refill. There was NO REAL REASON she couldn't have done that. There wasn't ANYTHING about this efficient except to give UNFAIR FASTER BETTER SERVICE to the table behind us and made us wait longer when it wasn't their turn. It's UNFAIR. WHY should my time be punished for theirs? When you are waiting for a table in a restaurant even, you don't have the second people that walked in if it's the same party size get seated first unless the first set of people have a special request. WHY going in the order of turns is somehow not wrong in the manager's eyes and in the server's eyes? I cannot believe the manager wouldn't understand. It's like if that were HER refill, she wouldn't appreciate seeing her server make a frozen margarita first and she knows it. It's just MEAN and MORALLY WRONG to serve in that manner. What a mean waitress and a mean manager.

Think about it like this, it was that slow they were decorating and sweeping, I cannot understand why they would be OK with making a customer wait for a refill when you are THAT SLOW? That's just mean and wrong. As I said before, we have had servers just go get a refill and come back. Those got the 25% and higher tips. The waitress deserves nothing for cutting that many times in front of us. To take up our time to even fix all of those drinks when it's not busy that she had time to go sweep is just unfeeling of a human being. I couldn't live with myself knowing I did that and then expected a tip, I don't get it? Then, to go the OPPOSITE WAY of the soft drink area to fix a bar drink BEFORE a soft drink doesn't make ANY LOGICAL SENSE when soft drinks take LESS TIME to make. I will NEVER step foot in this place again. What an UNFAIR MANAGER and a waitress that is too lazy to not cut in front of people's turns. A good person would have just went to get the refill and came back, THEN greeted the next table. It was MY TURN BEFORE THEIR TURN. It's ONLY FAIR. You want a tip, be FAIR and then you will get one. Then, to not come by to see if we were ready for the check to worry about sweeping is RIDICULOUS. That's not customer service. Sweeping can be done AFTER we have left. That was just totally RIDICULOUS service and VERY UNACCEPTABLE. HOW is it "more efficient" for my turn? It's more efficient to that one table, but sure not to the other customer that is only wanting ONE soft drink. This was just MEAN and the manager being on her side during a NON-BUSY time that they have time to play around decorating and sweeping is ridiculous to actually train this way. What kind of customer service is this?

So it's OK if I ask our server when she is at another table for a refill and the server will just stop taking their food orders to get my refill, right? NO, she won't. She will tell me to wait my turn. So if I have to abide by turns, WHY can't the server treat us in the SAME MANNER that everyone has turns and NO ONE should CUT, NOT the customer and NOT the server either. What's good for us, should be good for the server serving us. If I am not interrupting someone else's turn, WHY can the server do it? During a non-busy time, HOW is that FAIR to the customer that was first? Yet, they value sweeping and decorating more than customer service. I WILL NEVER STEP FOOT IN THIS PLACE AGAIN! What a MEAN, UNCARING, UNFAIR, and INCONSIDERATE MANAGER AND WAITRESS! If that were them waiting for a refill seeing all of that waiting 4-5 minutes for a freakin soft drink, they'd feel differently and they know it. I mean it's not busy to make someone wait 5 minutes for a refill. That's RIDICULOUS!! Yet, your server has time to sweep. Any servers(we go out to eat very often), that has time to sweep, is a time when there aren't many customers and they have nothing else to do. I don't understand how the manager can train like this so UNFEELING and UNCARING of a human being. I hope BOTH employees get cut in front of and see how they feel when THEY are in these situations. They would want to serve differently once they are in them and they know it. What a bunch of mean people here. HOW is it more efficient to make ME wait longer for a soft drink when I asked FIRST out of the 3 or 4 non-bar drinks to take time to fix all of those drinks and then make a margarita to top it off? That's not more efficient, that's IGNORING the customer's time and turn SEVERAL TIMES IN A ROW. That's cutting a lot. All of those drinks didn't need to be made so you can give the other table FASTER BETTER SERVICE. It should be their turn WHEN it is their turn and NOT before that. It's not fair. Why should they get their turn first when they weren't first? It's not their turn, so why should they get their turn first and give better service to them? WHY be UNFAIR to one customer and give excellent service to the other? WHY not treat everyone as EQUALS? As I said, if it had been busy, I would have fixed the NON-BAR DRINKS for both tables and then as she did gave the person that ordered first their one refill. I wouldn't have EVER thought of going the complete OPPOSITE direction to the bar to fix a frozen margarita first for the customers that asked AFTER the first person that asked for their soft drink. That just doesn't make any sense. It's RUDE to serve in that manner. NO WAY could I live with myself if I worked for a manager that promoted cutting like that. If I worked there as a server, I would have just gone to get the refill and came back, then greeted my next table. It would have taken LESS than a minute as it SHOULD be for a refill. It wasn't busy enough to justify cutting like that. Especially not fixing a frozen margarita before a non-bar drink. That's just wrong. Also, they don't have soft drinks at the bar that she could have gotten? If not, they need to fix that if they feel she should have gone to the bar first. It's just wrong the way I was treated. It hurts my feelings and I won't stand for people condoning cutting like that. It's not more efficient to the first table. It makes them wait A LOT LONGER and UNFAIRLY so. It's MORALLY WRONG! I WILL NEVER go to this place again. I cannot believe they'd rather have their staff worry about sweeping and decorating over customer service. That's just unbelievable to make us wait to leave so she could sweep and not check up on us. Such uncaring workers. She IGNORED my request and went to greet the next table anyway. What a mean person. I couldn't have done that, even if I was trained to do that, I couldn't live with myself to make someone wait like that, even at McDonald's even that you couldn't make a tip from, I wouldn't have done that.

The owner of this establishment is a douchebag. He screamed at a female employee, repeatedly calling her stupid, all while his restaurant was full of people. It was inappropriate and disrespectful to say the least. I will never eat at this restaurant again. I will not support a business who's employees are treated so poorly. He made NO effort to apologize to her or anyone else in the restaurant. It was horrible.

AVOID!!! Awkward feeling right from the get go, large table, place was empty. Server was nice, but that doesn't make good service, it was sub-par. Food was alright, however to many other Mexican joints in town nowadays to rave about here. Had a birthday cake, server never asked to take it in back, so it just hung out at table. After we were done eating server went out of her way not to acknowledge the cake. We all decided to take the cake to someones house and leave this joke they call "Casa Maria". Now the interesting part, everyone's stomach seemed to get torn up, even the next day. Non of us will be returning, unfriendly staff, adequate at best food and possible food poisoning. Our table alone probably accounted for half of their revenue that night. I can see now though why the place was empty.

I used to like this place and would come here pretty often, but I stopped for a while. I came back again after a long time and I dunno what happened to it. Food was alright but the waitress was just so awkward. She looked like she was being forced to work there and didn't really care. Service felt like the minimum but even then I wouldn't have called it really bad... Just really awkward. Maybe the other waiters/waitresses are alright but I don't feel like the food was good enough to make that gamble every time I come here.

Food was good but horrible service.

Horrible Management. Went to Casa Maria tonight and food was good. Service was terrible but as a middle-aged woman I know college kids are new at this so that doesn't bother me a whole lot. However, what did bother me was when I asked for some more sour cream and guacamole because not enough came with the huge orders of nachos and made it clear that I didn't want a side order because we only had a little bit left on our plate. I was told okay and still brought a side order serving and then charged $6. I spoke with the manager about this who agreed that her waiter was wrong for not informing me that it could only be done as a side dish and there would be a $6 charge. It gets better! She then proceeded to tell me that the waiter didn't try to clarify anything with me and just brought it because I intimidated her and the charges would not be removed and I could just take it out of her waiter's tip; which I believe was the owner's daughter. She must work for free. Needless to say, she finally did take the charge off but also commented that I shouldn't expect anything for free and I proceeded to inform her that she really needed to find another profession that didn't involve customer service. She must work for peanuts for this owner to hire such a poor manager, which is really a shame because food is decent. I'll be a customer not returning over $6 that this manager felt she needed to try to save after admitting her worker made a mistake. Amazing!

The Emchiladas Suizas were so bad I couldn't even entertain the thought of eating them! My child said they smelled like urinal cakes.
Because I was very hungry, I decided to try the Maria's Fish. This was not bad.
At least we had a great waitress.

Great food!!. I am in town from Houston on a business trip. Coming to Casa Maria was as good if not better than some of the mexican food restaurants at home! I highly recommend.

Favorite Margarita Joint Back In College. They do pretty good margarita specials especially the all day 2 for 1 on Saturday. We used to go get tuned up at Casa before going hanging by the pool. Great place with a family atmosphere. The employees all seem happy and stay around for a long time so you're seeing the same people. I just like it.

Best Tex-Mex in Baton Rouge. When I moved here a dozen years ago from Dallas (which is to Tex-Mex what south Louisiana is to crawfish), I lived practically around the corner from Casa Maria, and it became a convenient place to get my biweekly chicken enchilada fix. Since then, I've eaten at half a dozen other Mexican places in BR, and while some of them are pretty good (and some are thoroughly mediocre), Casa Maria is still the best I've found. The menu is broad enough (combo plates as well as fajitas and grilled items) and moderately priced ($10-$12 for a very filling meal plus iced tea), the staff is competent and friendly, and I've never had to wait more than 3-5 minutes for a table, even at busy times. And my wife assures me the margaritas are first-rate. There's always a mix of young families, after-work groups, travelers, and 20-somethings on dates. The only problems are (1) the continuing road construction at Bluebonnet & Perkins, which slows access to their parking lot, and (2) the decreased size of the lot itself since the self-storage place went up where their rear parking used to be.

For me Casa Maria has been a long time favorite around Baton Rouge going back to my college days at LSU. They have good Mexican(Tex-Mex) foo
