This is a local favorite place. It is down home style food. They are famous for there gravy over all platter as well as there house dressing. The amazing thing is the menu is almost the exact same as it always has been. As well as the place in general. They offer big size plates as well as amazing customer service. The wait is normally that long. They even offer pick up service. It is the kind of place that you will want to go to all the time. If gravy is not your thing do not worry. They offer amazing other options as well. There potatoes are huge and amazing. I highly recommend going here if you are visiting Bartlesville you will have a good experience.
Don't be fooled by the outside appearance. Best open faced sandwich and hamburger we've had in a long time. Wonderful, friendly staff. Old diner feel.
EXCELLENT food and look at this lemon pie perfection! Hot hamburgers are the rage here, but everything we've had is great - from the chicken fried steak to the shrimp and on and on.
Murphy's Original Steak House motto is "gravy over all". Take a trip to Murphy's Original Steak House and you'll hear "gravy over all" echoed by employees of this long-standing steak house established in 1946 by Melvel and Lorene Murphy and currently owned by their son, Paul. Don't be fooled by the name because the most popular item on the menu is the hot hamburger.
The hot plate is a brown monochromatic delight for many costumers. Toasted bread topped with hamburger pieces, homemade French fries, onions, and brown beefy "gravy all over," creates this belly buster of a food mountain.
Since I wanted to try the mashed and fried potatoes, I ordered the hamburger steak with mashed, and my husband the hamburger with fries. Being a life-long squeamish meat-eater, I asked for the steak to be prepared as extra well done. Made to order, browned throughout, and dressed in gravy, each bite was tender and delicious. Ample leftovers provided another meal at home.
My husband enjoyed his burger but favors the mom and pop meat patties of Tulsa's Freddie's, Brownie's, and Ty's are tastier.
Decorated with black and white photos of historic Bartlesville, booth seating, and a spacious bar lined with bar stools (with backs), it looks like a diner. Staff are in constant motion, bearing smiles and offering friendly service. The customers are neighborly too. A diner next to my husband struck up a conversation with him and revealed he had retired from the same company my husband works for.
Other menu items include: barbeque beef sandwiches, t-bones, pork chops, and marinated chicken breasts. Side items consist of fries, chili, and vegetables of the day. The children's menu offers grilled cheese, chicken strips, and hot dogs. Open-face sandwiches of hot hamburger, cheeseburger, ham, beef, and steak are listed.
Breakfast is served all day. Soft drinks, tea, and coffee, wash down the meaty dishes. Apple, coconut, lemon, chocolate, and pecan pies are served for dessert. The only disappointment was learning that the pies are not made in the restaurant.
Located at 1625 SW Frank Phillips, you will see it when you reach the sign of the neon cow. Business hours are 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. everyday. Call for information at 918-336-4789.
With no intention of finding another Red Dirt Report tombstone story in researching the eatery, I was, however, pleased to discover the Murphy's motto and image of the "world famous hot hamburger" adorning the gravestone of Melvel and Lorene Murphy in White Rose Cemetery.
OMG! WORTH THE 9 HOUR DRIVE!. If you ever go to Bartlesville, OK......no GO to Bartlesville ,OK and get the HOT BACON CHEESEBURGER. It is to die for...well I almost killed myself trying to finish it. It is sooooo delicious. I will drive to eat here anytime! I so wish they will open a restaurant in Houston. I see why they have been in business since the 1940s.
Hot Hamburger Worth the Hype. I've been coming here since moving to Bartlesville in high school back in 2003. I don't eat here more than maybe once a year, but it's an experience everyone should try at least once if they're in the Bartlesville area.
The hot hamburger they serve isn't necessarily anything special, and can fairly easily be replicated, but the experience of eating at the Murphy's bar, in what amounts to a bit of a cramped diner, for the first time when they sling you that massive pile of gravy, fries, and meat is tough to explain outside the word -- awesome.
I always bring friends here for that experience alone. I've never attempted to stray from that one item on the menu, so I can't speak to any of their other options.
For those wondering a hot hamburger is 1 piece of texas toast, 1 hamburger patty, fries on top, brown gravy over all. It's fantastic.
Tasty food. The food was good (not good for you but you know that when you choose a place like this), the servings were huge, the waitress was very friendly and helpful. The ranch dressing was homemade. The picture is of a hot steak sandwich, we requested a breaded chicken fry instead of their standard unbreaded steak on this sandwich. Food was served piping hot and fast.
I've been a Murphy's customer for over 30 years. My mother used to work there in the 70's in the back making salads and the gravy. I worked there, too. I worked right along side of Mr and mrs Murphy (wow, the stories I could tell..lol). Back then, the food was really good, and the service has always been good. The one thing I didn't like about the place is the way they treated, as they called them, "the colords" but..it was 30 years ago and this is Oklahoma . I have often dreamt about those great fires and gravy..yummy.
It has changed so much since the Murphy's have passed. The food quality is not as good, the portions getting smaller, and the prices going up. We are moving out of Oklahoma for good next year..I will try to go one more time just for old times sake and a final goodbye. I would still encourage everyone to at least try it once. I'm not sure why some people think, the gravy is from a packet..it never was before. It was always made with the stock from boiling the roast for roast beef sandwiches. I know because I can still see my mama back there stirring gravy. As for the salad dressing..I recall Ruth made it from scratch. I remember buttermilk being used.
Anyways as I said I think everyone needs a Murphy's experience
First time here and wasn't disappointed! I had the hot cheeseburger, and my wife the hot Jr cheeseburger with Swiss! The fries were good especially covered in gravy! Worth the 45 minute drive here!
A Bartlesville treat! I limit myself to going once or twice a year, as there's enough calories in the hot hamburger to sustain a small village for a week ;)
The reviewers who think the gravy is packaged know nothing of Murphy's. It's slow cooked for FOUR DAYS. yum!! And the house garlic salad dressing is great! Anyone who thinks it's thousand island obviously didn't taste it. Big difference between creamy garlic and mayo/orange juice/pickles.
I just may have to go this weekend and clog my arteries a bit! Sooo worth the trip from Tulsa!
Love me some Murphy's!!. Going to Murphy's is always a highlight when visiting Bartlesville!! I always get the Hot Cheeseburger every time and its always the same!! Awesome!! Try it with mustard on top, you might be surprised how good it is!!
Great Greasy Spoon!. My husband grew up a Bartian, so anytime we are near the area, we stop in for the Murphy's special. The salad is just shredded lettuce, with carrots, cheese and tomatoes, but the house made garlic dressing makes it seems so, so special. It comes with a basket of assorted crackers and white bread. Murphy's motto is gravy over all, but I recommend you get the gravy on the side. This way, you avoid the greasy, coagulated french fry mess that inevitably happens after two minutes. (ps, the french fries are awesome dipped in their garlic dressing!) We've never ordered the steak because the burgers are so good. Murphy's is just a down home greasy spoon appealing to the area cattle farmers. The place has always been super busy, even on the weekdays. How can so many Oklahoma cattle ranchers be wrong? For everyone who posted bad reviews, I suggest you drive over to Subway to "eat fresh."
Been here so many times.... I go hiking in Osage State Park a lot and so I have been to Murphy's quite a few times. If you don't like old-fashioned 1940's diner food, don't go here. It is not healthy or gormet, but it tastes really good. (Plus after a long hike, you can splurge.) These people are very friendly and have fast service- always refill your drink before it's empty.
Good:
Hamburgers
Steaks
French fries (taste like potatoes)
Chicken- fried or marinated
Baked potatoes
Grilled Ham and cheese
Fair:
Salads are just iceberg lettuce with tomato and some carrot shavings
Don't Get: Chili- it's from a can. Not worth $4.
Good food at a good price. I had the hot beef sandwich. Their specialty I'd oepn face sandwiches topped with homestyle fries and brown gravy. The food was delicious and the service was pleasant. Great local spot this passer by was glad to have found. Certainly not a cloth napkin place and I didn't see anyone actually eat a steak. But for what it is well worth th
Great. Very good food, far from healthy, but a great treat once and again. The melts are good, the service is pretty pleasant, the only downfall is the occasional wait. Worth the wait however, and price isn't bad.
Delicios food, great service, excelent atmosphere. I have been going to murphy's since I was 2. I love to go and get the hot hamburger with gravy over all. One of my top three resterauants of all time. Don't forget the garlic salad on crackers!
It's awesome! One of the best steak houses in bville. It's a greasy spoon, but hey? Who can argue with a hot hamburger drizzled in gravy with fries on top?
Bring your own defibralator!. Holy cow...
Okay, it ain't a steakhouse, but it is pretty darn fantastic. An open faced cheeseburger served on texas toast topped with fries and brown gravy all over. A client took me here and told that in all the years his family had been coming here, it never occurred to them even try a steak, they always go for the murphy's original. Not a bad plan at all.
My favorite place ever! I grew up in this local joint..after ball games, church, or hanging out in a random parking lot with friends. Everyone in town has been there and automatically knows what they are ordering when they go...hot hamburger, "gravy over all".
Wasn't sure what to expect really..but it was delicious! It seems like an odd mixture but it's actually quite good! The staff is friendly and accommodating. I recommend checking this diner out for some delicious comfort food.
Gravy over all is really all you have to know when ordering from this local favorite. The Hot Hamburger is a one of a kind creation that you have to try when coming here. I know they have other things on the menu, but I haven’t ever tried anything else, the hhb is that good. Is it healthy, no, and who cares. If you want a great memory, full belly and that comfort food experience, then get the Hot Hamburger with gravy over all, you won’t regret it. As a side note, the garlic salad dressing is out of this world great, order the dressing and a side of lettuce :)
The service here is beyond amazing, they really make you feel like family. The food is phenomenal, beyond words. Definitely a hidden gem if you aren’t from the area.
So a Bartlesville, OK staple since the 1940's. Famous for their steaks and the Hot-hamburger (what we go for). Fast friendly service and delicious food. Be ready for a wait during the weekend.
July 2022 update, took out of state family for late lunch. Hot hamburger's, chicken fried steak and a couple of their loaded baked potato's. As usual everything was delicious and service was great.
Open faced sandwich is a must! Thank you to the Murphys crew. Great food and great service every time. Gravy over all!
Always making delicious food! This place is so nostalgic for me, I grew up coming here for lunch with my dad and Everytime I come home to visit, we go here! Hamburger steak covered in gravy and onions! And don't forget their SOFT CRUSHED ICE 😍
I'm new to town, I did have the opportunity to eat here. It's a staple here in Bartlesville! The food is great, the staff warm and fun and friendly. It's definitely one of those places where the locals gather and are treated like family.
If you're not a local, it's a great place to visit as it's family owned and ran and as you travel it's a great place to get away from constantly eating at franchise's.
I applied for a server job here, the hiring manager was so friendly! They are full up with employees, I wasn't surprised as it seems like a most excellent place to work! I do hope eventually I can get my foot in the door with them.
Until then I'll enjoy visiting them as a customer!
Okay people this place goes above and beyond for their customers. We went this evening after my boyfriend was suprised by his deaf daughter showing up. We were treated with respect and kindness. The waitress was phenomenal! Her $20 tip was well deserved!! Oh ya and the price is fantastic!! One more thing if you leave hungry its your own fault!! A+++ Rating
