Review El Chilito - Austin

TX _Marauder
Stopped in before a meeting for some breakfast. Staff was really friendly. I asked what was popular since it was my first time there. He suggested the Cherrywood from the breakfast tacos. The Tinga De Pollo from the specials. The Cherrywood was great. Crispy bacon and potatoes. The Tinga was a little bland. So was the salsa. Ordered a lime Aguas Frescas which was also good. I plan on going back to try other tacos.

If you live in Austin Texas and you like tacos you need to come here. This place brings the yummy taco stand flavor with fresh and whole ingredients that make for a really filling and satisfied feeling. They also have vegan options which is a great plus for no meat mondays :)!

Very delicious and lots of options! Quick service and the workers are kind and sociable. Vegan/vegetarian options are very clearly labelled on the window menu board but not online. My burrito fell apart halfway through eating it but that may have been user error :) Salsa provided was very mild but had good flavor.

I've been going to this place for years. It's one of my favorites. They have great tacos, salads and queso!!! I Love being able to go here for breakfast, lunch or dinner. A few years back, however, they completely jacked up their prices. A lot. And, I'm sorry... But they are just a small taco joint. And although they are good, so are a lot of other taco joints. When they raised their prices, I stopped going as much. Maybe they did this to help open the other stores around town. Or maybe their rent in East Austin went up. Who knows. Anyways, I still think they are great, and I still go there, just not quite as often as I once did. Highly recommend.

Perfect for a quick, cheap bite before you head out for the night. Don't go when it's cold outside unless it's for take out, or you want to eat in your car. The queso is great. The salsa is different but good. And the burritos are ridiculously huge.

I find myself frequenting this El Chilito for breakfast tacos. They are always on point and come out reasonably fast. The service is always super friendly as well. Every once in a while I'll get a regular taco or burrito and it'll come with ingredients that aren't listed on the menu, which is annoying but I'll live. The horchata is alright but occasionally it's super chalky. Parking can be pretty tight on weekends but there's street parking all over the place too. If it's super hot out and you can't handle the heat, get your order to go because an umbrella isn't going to help much.

Amazing tacos. Can't miss this spot!

Really good toppings for their tacos, but the flour tortillas are just extremely plain. Like seriously, they taste like the cheapest grocery store tortillas you can find. Using better tortillas would make things excellent.

A Cochinita Pibil burrito. That's what I ordered. I fully expected grease stains on my clothes (I ate in my car), sloppy food construction, just mayhem. It's a messy dish. I was pleasantly surprised. The grease was minimal (1 napkin minimal), and the burrito stayed burrito-fied. The onions were pickled as per proper Pibil. They weren't pickled to the point of disintegration.. Crunchy even. The Pico was extra fresh. A few grains of rice in the burrito were a little crunchy... but some Latino dishes actually use rice this way on purpose. It's a taste I don't mind at all, but it might have taken some by surprise. There was a tiny dollop of refried beans. Not sure if it was on purpose or not. Overall the pork, while a little plain in taste (certainly for a Latin dish), was tender, juicy, and well prepared. I think the only thing I would say could have been improved would be that the burrito tortilla could have been cooked. It was good, but would have been better had they put a little fire to it before making the burrito. There were (3) cooling fans (you know... with the misters) set up in the waiting/seating area. Very nice. The menu is easy to read. Simple. Descriptive. Couldn't find the drinks on the menu. Saw some bottles on the window ledge inside after ordering... kind of off to the side. Hidden. They probably don't sell many drinks. The pricing was reasonable for what I received. I'll go back again. I might even go through the menu... They're good enough to sample. I think this place will make it a long long time in Austin.
