Review Julio's Restaurant - Austin

Jean Philippe Guy
Traditional Mexican restaurant with plenty to choose from. We went stopped in for lunch. Owner at the entrance was very warm and welcoming. My wife had the chicken quesadillas and I had the house salad with pulled chicken. Ranch dressing was house made and a definite plus. Both plate were delicious and a really great value. We ended up spending less than $30 for the 2 of us including tip. Place itself is a little older but clean and it feels truly authentic. A must try. We will be back.

Julio's to me is hands down the best restaurant in all of Austin. True, there are a lot of good places to eat in the city. None of them are quite like Julio's. The roasted chicken here is otherworldly and sends you into a dream of flavor. The chicken taco plate and the soup are some of the best dishes I've ever had in my life. Best of all however is the ambience; it's a family-owned place with the kindest staff you can find, and a warm, homey environment to accompany the home-cooked food. Overall an institution in Hyde Park, a gem of Old Austin you'd be sorry to miss.

This place has the best soup and roast chicken, and Julio and Stella are the bee's knees. Not your typical heavier Mexican food, it is comforting, delicious and such a great neighborhood joint. I've been coming here a long time and will continue to do so. A Hyde Park institution!

worth it score: 80/100. Large portions, great value, tasty. Was up to expectations.

Well done Tex Mex with a great happy hour! I got the veggie plate and it was delicious & a big portion. My food came out quickly and the restaurant was clean. They do take cards which I saw in earlier reviews that they used to not. Indoor & outdoor seating, order at the counter.

Been eating here for years! I have to go get the Migas for brunch at least twice a month. Other favorites are the chicken soup. Tasty and it'll cure what ails you. Chicken enchiladas are my go-to for a dinner treat. It recently changed hands, but the food is still just as delicious and the new owner and her workers are great! Just guard your food from the grackles if you eat outside!!

Best carne guisada I ever had in Austin. My friend had the chicken soup and it was like home made. Owner came over to ask how we were doing. Very pleasant atmosphere and friendly staff.

Absolutely one of my favorite restaurants in Austin and favorite Tex-Mex of all time! Great tasting, home cooked, fresh, healthy food! Friendl &, fast service. The best is when Stella herself is there to take your order. Sitting inside or out, your sure to strike up a conversation with a local Hyde Park resident. The atmosphere is relaxed and neighborly. Stella made it through the pandemic, without shutting the doors, likely because of the relationships she's built with her customers; Julios is a true neighborhood gem. I love the enchiladas or chicken soup but for breakfast it's always an egg and avacado taco! HURRY TO JULUOS!!

My wife and I fell in love with this restaurant! The service was friendly and welcoming, on top of being fast and efficient thanks to our waitress rosario . The environment was energetic and lively. But the show stopper was hands down the food!!!

Julio's is one of few old Austin places left. The food is all great, especially chicken. Everyone there is friendly and most of the customers are regulars.

This place has mastered chicken. It's super good, fast, high quality and well priced. Interior is pretty casual but great for a quick bite.

If I'm in the mood for almost authentic Mexican food, this is the place I definitely will select, love their tortilla soup, is difficult to make a choice ordering, since everything is so good!!

I’m not sure what the comment below means but the food and service is amazing , I think the new owner is bringing great things . I love it!!!!

Rude service, order at counter & couldn't get questions answered, ignored by the guy who delivered my margarita. 1st & last time here. Had to beg for water, because the guy at the front didn't give it to me. Cold food. Mediocre taste. Cash only. Not sure why people go here.

Local family restaurant. Friendly service, good good food, you will see repeat Hyde Park neighbors there. Love Mexican Martinis with vege nachos in the evening, and breakfast...love the Mexicanas plate. Not sure of nme

Yuck. Pros: <br/>Affordable <br/><br/>Good salsa<br/><br/><br/>Cons: <br/><br/>I was very disappointed. It was more "American" than Mexican. <br/><br/>Poor service. You place your order at the register before you seat yourself.<br/><br/>You don't have a server to check on you to see if you need anything not even to refill your water....<br/><br/>THEY ONLY ACCEPT CASH which is sketchy just like the neighborhood.<br/><br/>There is an ATM but it charges you $3.50<br/><br/>"Queso" = store bought velveeta cheese dip<br/><br/>Rice= white with a splash of color die<br/><br/>Chips= store bought white flour <br/><br/>Nachos= The cheese was shredded cheddar and white cheddar cheese which was gross and chunky The chicken tasted freaky too.... The only thing edible: beans and chips.

CASH ONLY.. It was pretty tasty, not too pricey, but bring cash.

Yuck. Worst fajitas I've ever tasted.. For some reason every local Mexican place in Austin has terrible fajitas. They taste like Asian food. The only good fajitas in this town come from pappasitos.

I ordered the Lite Breakfast, and an ice tea. The ice is awesome, I could of had just that. Tea was fresh. The fruit was fresh ( watermelon, canalop, honeydew, grapes and bananas) eggs were cooked just as I ordered them. Over all was good. One downfall is they only take cash!!

Decent. THE ORDER: Grilled chicken fajita tacos (w/ Spanish rice, refried beans). Chips with queso & salsa.<br/>THE GOOD: Chicken was juicy with great flavor (dark and white meat). Salsa had a nice kick. Chips were thin and crispy. Tortillas tasted homemade (not sure if they were or not).<br/>THE BAD: There were small bones left in the chicken. Queso was liquidy and most likely store-bought.<br/>RECOMMENDED: Order the chicken nachos. They're piled high w/ cheese and juicy chicken.

Probably the best chicken taco I've ever had.

Great find. Clearly a favorite with folks, there was always a line while we were there.<br/><br/>The Carne Guisada was really yummy and the beer cold. Everyone in our party enjoyed their meal.<br/><br/>I will be back.

Julio's is not Tex-Mex!. As some reviewers don't understand-<br/>Julio's is not Tex-Mex<br/>Julio's does not have a 100 item menu<br/>Julio's is not a trendy place<br/>Julio's doesn't need to take credit cards<br/>Julio's is a family run restaurant<br/>Julio's is for families<br/>Julio's is a neighborhood place<br/><br/>Julio's has the absolute best breakfast anywhere in Austin, Mexican breakfast or otherwise....I always get the huevos mexicanos with extra chiles frescas scrambled in....the fresh fruit is fantastic....tortillas de maiz and a topo chico.......their salsas are excellent....fantastico.....sit outside....enjoy the neighborhood....<br/>you don't go to Julio's for nachos.....go to one of the 500 tex-mex joints in Austin for that....<br/>you don't go to Julio's for French toast....go to a French restaurant for that....<br/>Although others apparently had dry chicken, I've never experienced that and I've been going there since Julio Sr ran the place on West Lynn.....rotisserie chicken is about the best around....one can't even get the kind of equipment that they use (originally from Mexico City) cause it's not made anymore....salads are very good......Estella is wonderful...and I've not encountered Julio Jr.....so I can't comment on his service mindset....<br/>My 5 year old says "I luv Julio's"....and so do I.....
East Austin
Been for Lunch and had good chicken tacos and a beer...very relaxed and cozy. No line around the block and a comfortable atmosphere...warn out booths and windows for peop watchin'. Normal mex fare with a real bump up in taste by comparison to other taquerias.<br/>Came for Breakfast too (they open a little late for early risers) and had delicious migas and tried the huevos racheros....delicious. .big portions and some tired homefries(need a little love here folks..step it up outside the 'cisco' frozen offerings). The refried beans were orndinary as any. The tortillas were great, warm and fresh(what i could tell). The vibe inside is enough to offset the negs. Would go again. Food is as good as any other mex around (better, I think),without the hype...THUMBS UP!

Love. I love Julios. There is something really comfortable about this place... and I'm sure it's not just the Mexican martini's talkin'. They rotisserie their chicken in house and it just tastes amazing. So anything with chicken from their tacos to their chicken soup will be great. <br/><br/>The only point to note is that this is a cash only establishment. So don't forget to swing by the ATM. There is also one across the street in the grocery store in case you need some upon arrival.

The Mexican margaritas are the best. Family owned and operated with a super friendly vibe. Great chicken dishes.

Julios is my absolute favorite restaraunt. I grew up eating their dishes. Everything they serve is never short of satisfying and delicious. I strongly suggest you try this somewhat interior Mexican marvel. You won't be disappointed!!
