I decided to suck it up and make the trek out to Astoria, Queens, for a get together that a friend was throwing.

Yes, normally the words "Queens" and "partying" make me snicker when mentioned in the same sentence, but I was pleasantly surprised at the good time I had here tonight.

As you get off the Steinway Street subway stop it is a bit of a long walk down two avenues and a few blocks over to reach Blackbirds. Steinway Street still reminds me of a place having an identity crisis as it is lined with small shops and businesses that remind me of living in the surburbian strip mall hell that I escaped from so many years ago

Walking up the the entrance you are greeted by a nicely framed structure unlike others that I had just passed. Entering inside there was an energetic crowd of locals from the area enjoying the evening with good brews and hearty bar foods. I was actually a bit impressed with the beer list which included German favorites on tap such as Radeberger and Hofbrau served in the appropriate mugs. Also on hand were other craft type beers and drinks served in mason jars. One in our group was drinking Magners Cider which came in a large foil lined bottle. You can really get your drink on here, and prices are a bit cheaper than at the bars in Manhattan! Saw many people getting wings here, which looked and smelled wonderful. I heard someone proclaim that this place is known for their wings and Wednesday is wing night. Might be worth another trek here to try them out. Being lent and all, I am trying to be a good boy and not eat meat on Fridays, as I can hear my Grandma's voice yelling out "Don't forget not to eat meat on Friday Philip!!! It's a sin!!! I will pray for you!". But, damn, I wanted to sin so bad when those wings walked by.

Place is set up with a long bar up front with high table seating along windows across from it, and a larger seating area in the back. Exposed brick wall with a dartboard, and a few flatscreens that were showing college basketball. Pretty crowded here tonight and everyone seemed to be in good spirits. Digital jukebox was on premises and seemed to be getting a good workout. A mix of tunes were being played, from dance, to rock, and a lot of Journey. Oh, yes, Journey. A suburban flashback started to give me the cold sweats, but it passed quickly as Mike and Ben F kept me entertained with good humor and ripping on each other. Great company makes any place a fun time. Even at a bar that is straddling the line between city life cool, and married suburban couple with 2.5 kids.

Now that I have experienced Blackbirds I might actually have to come back here again to try the wings and sample one of those mason jar drinks. This was actually a nice bar with a good staff and decent local crowd. It was a trek outside the confines of the city that proved worthwhile.

A Friendly Place for a brew and good food. I came in here by myself for no other reason than it had been a hell of a day and I wanted a place to have a bite and have a drink. I walked in and was immediately treated like I was a regular. The beer was so cold that when I tapped it, it formed a bit of slush at the top. Oh, Yes. I had some wings that were nuclear. Very tasty but it was great that I had cold beer with me. The waitstaff was attentive without being hovering. They seemed to know people who were walking in the place. I love the music in the place. Very cool.
