Homegrown is an absolute gem of a restaurant nestled on Merriman Avenue. I stumbled upon this charming spot while searching for soups, and to my delight, I discovered a diverse menu offering everything from sandwiches to soups to full entrees. My choice for the evening was the pasta with chicken, and it exceeded my expectations in every way. The flavors were delightful, and the portion size was surprisingly generous for the price range. Even an hour after indulging, I'm still feeling satisfied. Additionally, the Tempe and Soup were both exceptionally delicious. I wholeheartedly recommend Homegrown and can't wait to return for another memorable dining experience.

We went here for brunch on Saturday. Parking is just outside the restaurant, wasn’t extremely crowded. I had the catfish poboy and my friend had buttermilk chicken sandwich with biscuit gravy on the side. We enjoyed our food. The fish was fresh and portion size was more than enough for one person.

They have in house made from scratch biscuits. Local farm eggs and local farm sausage. I’m a big breakfast foods fan and sandwich fan. These were hands down the best I’ve ever tasted. Can’t wait to go back to Asheville to have them again.

Really enjoyed this place. The Catfish was perfect & all the food was prepared well. The only thing is would be that, there wasn't AC, Except for in one small room. We used that area, so it worked out well. The place is cozy however & it's definitely worth it to eat there. I will definitely return when in the Asheville area!

Best chicken sandwich in Asheville! With the best sauce, honey mustard horse-radish I believe? Whatever it is…. get two of ‘em! Very friendly staff as well and the atmosphere is wonderful. What’s not to love?

Incredible service, staff is constantly attentive and cordial.
The cutlery is clean and prepared, is gets a little hot inside so perhaps look for seating in their patio.
Aliments were prepared with care, workers seem to be enjoying their work.
The dessert is a must have, quite delicious and very generous portions.

This place was amazing. We really enjoyed the food and the relaxed casual atmosphere. I am especially grateful for the delicious vegetarian options.

Great grilled and fried chicken options plus lots more. New favorite is the pimpin chicken which has piminto cheese on top. Lots of delicious sides including mashed potatoes and broccoli options. Little house with side porch. Food was really good and atmosphere was nice. Order at center and dine in one of the rooms. To go options too.

This place was fantastic. Very small space inside but it's worth visiting.
You order at the counter then they bring out your food. I had the open face biscuit with fried chicken and gravy. I had the potato casserole as a side.
The food was fantastic and the employee that took my order and brought my food out was very nice and cordial. I would definitely return!

Unassuming looking little place that completely exceeded my expectations.
Huevos rancheros were on point. My eggs and bacon were cooked to order perfectly. I will have dreams about these cheese grits.
The art from local artists for sale on the wall of the dining area was a nice touch.

Greens/eggplant sides are outstanding

Had Beef Teriyaki and rice. It was packaged in a box from recycled materials. Not styrofoam. Box was not wrapped in plastic wrap or foil. Didn't close well either. I had requested light sauce.

I had to ask for it to be bagged. At this point I didn't know I had not received light sauce. Got home 2 miles up the road to find sauce had leaked all over my seat and all over counter once inside. It was a paper bag!

Called to let Homegrown know. No apologies just we're busy I'll call you back later tonight. I called back today and was told Wesley would be calling me this afternoon.

Her words when she called "I spoke to the owner and she said once the food leaves the restaurant it's not her problem." Also, "no one else has complained". Wesley, stated to me she looked in my box and didn't notice heavy sauce". If it wasn't such an absolute mess that would be funny.

Considering the meal is ¾ brown rice with a little leafy veggies and peppers with one inch square cubes of beef the liquid seeps in but doesn't absorb bc it's brown rice. The meat is not sliced it's beef stew small cubes, more on the medium well in texture. This is a lot of weight for a carry out box.

Was this situation rectified fairly? No, it wasn't and is very disappointing considering I'm local and go in a few times a month. Will I recommend to others? No, I won't because this isn't fast food per say. This meal was $11.00 plus tax. I ate in and brought the beef dish home. I spent $25 to arrive home with a big mess to clean up. My car is parked downstairs 4 stories. I couldn't leave the windows open bc of rain. My car still smells of garlic/teriyaki.

She asked me what they should do in this situation. I replied they take a few extra minutes to think about the Blue Plate specials they make are put together properly. If it's a beef stir fry slice the beef in strips and try marinating instead of soaking the dish in an excess of oil and teriyaki sauce. Take the time to package appropriately. Not just hand a box to a customer with an unsealed, paper container. The mess was bad enough but the lack of caring or appreciation towards the business I have given them is unacceptable.

Terrible, tepid hippie food. If there was ever a place that had bland, mediocre, confused hippie cuisine with no imagination and small portions, this is your place. The staff's attitude is very homegrown and they do not care about service, leave dirty tables and are blase. Perhaps the same description for the food can describe them also. There are better places to eat in Asheville.

Nice little place for a quick bite to eat. On the go or stay in. Friendly staff! Had the chicken which they mention is something they are known for. It was great. Though I do have to say a tad on the salty side, but sill good flavor!

I got the haddock. Went at lunch, the place was semi-busy but there was no wait and the food came quickly. I went for the catfish po'boy but they were sold-out so I got the fish & chips. The fish was thick, soft, moist, and delicious. The breading was light and crisp. Fries were cut shoestring thin, my favorite. Russet potato as per typical.

The best friend chicken ever!!! We love this place. Never had a bad dish. I love the sesame greens, gamers salad, and when they have green beans. My husband loves the fried macaroni and cheese balls. So fresh and great amount of food for the price!

Love this place. Always get the corn beef hash. Great food, great atmosphere, great prices. Need to try out dinner and see what I'm missing.

Popular, funky, local hot spot. Order at the counter, then they bring your food. Casual dining area with multiple rooms of mismatched tables and chairs. Try the fried chicken.
Jon
I don't get the high rating. Food was ok but nothing special. I ordered fried catfish and grits, which were cold. Wife's fries were cold and chicken sandwich was pretty boring. Worst of all was the wait. Took 30 minutes to order but restaurant was half full. There were empty tables everywhere.

Found this place on Zomato while passing through Asheville. Not much ambiance but very good food. Menu is posted on a wall board and has a variety of options. My husband and I each had fried chicken with roast veggies- the portions were large and well prepared. Almost ready to explode, we had to try one of the desserts-to split.
The caramel apple crisp which came was in a crock that held about 2 cups and was topped in a huge scoop of vanilla ice cream. Wonderful!!!!! You won't leave hungry and the price is very reasonable.

GREAT BRUNCH AND LUNCH
As the name implies this is a home style restaurant and it's TERRIFIC. Fresh food prepared to order and a friendly staff.
Located near UNC Asheville campus, HOMEGROWN offers the option of indoor/outdoor (dog friendly) seating. We had the recommended buttermilk chicken with gravy and home fries with roasted broccoli ($10). It was excellent.

There are also great looking options for other local fare including trout and vegetarian. The menu and specials are listed on the big board. Or ask for recommendations from the staff. Breakfast is served thru mid-day.

Parking in front, beside, and behind fills up during peak times. You have to order in line at the counter, and then select a place to sit. After that their service takes good care of you. The staff genuinely enjoys their work and it shows.

The recent "best of" awards on the wall are well earned. Good prices for the quality. It's a favorite of the locals, students, and the UNCA swim team.

HOMEGROWN is a must when in Asheville!

I really wanted to like Homegrown. Based on the reviews here, it seemed to have everything going for it: down home country cooking in a southern state, a relaxed homey feel, friendly servers (with a kind of post-hippie-ish cuteness), and a smoking chunk of pork out back -- the smell of which lured this reviewer from the street.

But all of the items I ordered tasted as though they had been given a generous helping of vinegar and salt. And I mean everything; from the fried chicken to the pot pie. The creativity was certainly there, but it was obscured below the aforementioned seasonings.

Because the restaurant's customers were raving inside the eatery about how good they thought the food was, I can't pan the place. Perhaps not being from the south, there's something I'm not "getting" about the meals here.

What I can say with certainty is that this restaurant does not deserve its current 4.0 rating. That signifies an establishment as something quite distinct and special. HomeGrown may wish to rise to this level, but it has a long way to go.

So, ultimately my recommendation is to try it. You might like it. Then again, maybe not.

Delicious, creative food! Wonderful service from nice employees. Adorable place with a very cozy, homey feel. Can't wait to come back again!

From the moment I stepped foot in the building I felt comfort, compassion and honesty.

Check your To-Go Orders before you leave the restaurant! You'd think that employees would be capable of doing their job by making sure each customer receives their correct order but once again, the Homegrown staff have failed us! We feel partially responsible since this is the 2nd time in less than 2 months we have order take out & got ALL the way back to our home (14.8 miles from our home to Homegrown, estimated 22 minute drive) with someone else's order. We would love to be able to dine in but we have newborn twin boys as well as a 4 year old. We order take out because it fits our family better at this time. Here's the details on the wrong order...The first time this happened, we had company in town. We order 4 entrees, a couple extra sides, & 4 desserts. Once we were back home we realized we had only 2 of the correct orders, neither of the desserts or sides were correct. We did drive back into town & picked up our chicken that had been sitting for over 45 minutes. A total of 28 miles is a lot of driving for dinner but that is what our guest had been waiting months to enjoy. We reheated it once we returned home & honestly, it was still delicious. The staff was very apologetic & also offered us a $50 gift card to help ease the pain of their mistake. We would have liked freshly fried chicken in lieu of the gift card but since my husband and I are both in the restaurant industry we tried to be understanding. For the 2nd time tonight, we order 2 fried chicken dinners, we made it home with a fried chicken dinner & trout :( How disappoint right?! I called to let them know we had the wrong order & the woman answering the phone, GIGGLES & says "ohh you got the trout instead of chicken, giggles again and says sorry" Are You Serious? This is FUNNY to you?!?! It's not to me. I'm a new mom & a very busy one at that. I just wanted to sit down and eat a meal since that doesn't happen a lot with new babies. All she could say was sorry and what can we do for you? She offered to leave another gift card, which is very kind but I don't want the gift card, I want what I paid for, Fried Chicken & for the staff to get it together! Pretty simple request as a regular customer. With all that being said we love their fried chicken, we crave it. It has to be some of the most delicious chicken in town. Will we order from them again? Yes! But we will be checking our order before we leave the restaurant & I suggest every customer does the same.

Amazingly Delicious!!. I've been all over North Carolina, and this place has THE best breakfast. Hands down!!

Poor service. Food was good. Service was served with no personality. Because of the lack of service skill I rate this place a 1 star

Dissapointed. My friend was so excited about bringing me here. What a disappointment. I love the fact that it has a seasonal menu which suggests that their fares are fresh and vine ripe, but my dish was bland and the presentation was less than appealing. To be fair, my friend really liked her lunch (catfish served w/ side of kudzu), but then again, she has an obtuse palate.

Highly recommend!!. Excellent food, reasonable prices. Quick service, great atmosphere. Went last night for the first time and we will definitely be back soon!

Great and responsive service. Very good food with variety. I ate with 7 of my family members and we all could find something we loved. Not to mention they use local ingredients and are a green and sustainable restaurant. Very impressive!

Best Fried Chicken in town. Food is always good. Must Try it

Sowing the Seeds. We had the fried chicken ($6.50) and catfish ($8) sandwiches here for lunch the other day. Not bad. Chicken was tender, the breading stayed put and the horseradish honey mustard brought it all together. The catfish was equally enjoyed though we thought the remoulade was a bit of a dud. These sandwiches are served ala carte, with the option of adding a side for $2. Which, in the case of the catfish would bring the price of the meal over $10. I mention this because a lot of the reviews Ive read here talk about how cheap this place is. Im just not seein it. Perhaps it seems cheap to people who lives in the 3/4 of a million dollar homes in Montford. But in the world the rest of us live in I would say that Homegrown is, once you add on sides that should be included to begin with, not exactly "cheap". Im sure the owners would counter by saying that everything is locally sourced, fresh, etc. To which I would reply "Take a look around. You guys aint the only ones flying that particular flag these days" Meaning that many other restaurants are doing the same thing and are able to keep the prices a tad friendlier. Just sayin....
Grade: B- (keep in mind that this is a 'order at the counter, get all your own supplies', type of setup)

A great local joint. We had the pimento cheese, which was fresh and tasty. The Redneck Cuban and Steak & Cheese sandwiches were awesome. They were able to put them on gluten free rolls which was great. The risotto, grits and cabbage sides were all great. We will be putting Homegrown on our must visit again list.

Couldn't have said it better than an earlier reviewer. "prices are low, quality high, portion sizes just right"

Had two great meals there during a weekend stay in Asheville. The best was the Chicken Parmesan. Excellent meal.

Not happy with my first time dining there and will not be giving it a second chance. Fries were limp and soggy, BBQ tofu was not good at all. The only table we could get was THISCLOSE to everyone standing in line and I felt way too close to everyone.

Tasty!. The food is great, high quality ingredients, that are prepared well. Depending on the meal the portions may be a little skimpy.

First time. I ordered the beef & cheese sandwich as a take-out. Unfortunately, when I got to my destination & tried the sandwich, it was so salty that I couldn't eat it. The bread had soaked up grease from the beef which was tough. Had to throw it away.

Chicken biscuit with egg and cheese for $4.50. You must not like yourself much if you've deprived yourself of it thus far.

Good Entres, Bad Sides, Bad Service. I liked the down-to earth atmosphere and creative menu ideas. I had a really good pulled turkey philly and my friend had a grilled chicken sandwich which she also liked. However, we ordered a basket of fries (side x2 = $4) and they were super crispy if not outright burnt. I took them back and asked for another basket of softer fries more properly cooked. It seemed that the lady who was "helping" me just gave me a glaring look and a few minutes later brought back a basket of equally burnt and crispy fries. It seemed to me and my friend that she just changed the basket from a plastic red basket to a plastic yellow basket. We were not impressed with the service we received and will not be returning customers.

Prices are low, quality high, and portion size is just right.

African peanut soup. Oh man, I went back two days in a row just for this soup. Vegetables and peanuts with just the right amount of spice. All four of us loved it!

The menu is written on a huge chalk board, and changes daily. Everything we have had so far has been terrific. I could happily eat there every day!

I had the marinated tempeh and veggies with brown rice. It was so good. Oh, so so good. The sauce it’s in is a light, savory, brothy delight that is soaked into the brown rice and the tempeh. The tempeh was thick, chewy and perfectly prepared. I chose this dish because I wanted to see what people

Hard to believe Greg & Miki Kilpatrick opened HomeGrown at 371 Merrimon Avenue just two years ago. Since opening, they’ve developed a devoted following (family) and most recently won 1st place in the annual Best of WNC 2012 “Diner-home style” category and 2nd place in this year’s Best Dish NC casual dining category. HomeGrown’s tagline (as well as their web address) is “ slow food right quick “. Here’s a little insight into that choice from the Kilpatricks: Why “slow food right quick”? We believe in the Slow Food philosophy that “everyone has a fundamental right to pleasure and consequently the responsibility to protect the heritage of food, tradition and culture that make this pleasure possible.” We also know that out here in the real world people are in a hurry. So, we serve up “slow food,” that is to say good, clean, local food, “right quick!” The neat, trim, nondescript exterior belies a warm, cozy, bohemian-”ish” interior. One of four inside dining areas is shown here. There’s als
