Amazing tacos and great service on top of a fabulous atmosphere vibe in this place was just perfect and the food just made it that much better and not even to mention we were the last people for the kitchen to cook for. They were trying to close down and everything but yet they still made our food fabulous, and all the way up to par, I would definitely go again and I would certainly recommend for anyone to check this place out. It was totally worth it.

Went here for lunch and really enjoyed the food. We had the Cuban sandwich and the California style burger. Both were excellent and came with fries that were very well seasoned. Great beer list with selections from all of the big Asheville breweries. The food arrived quickly after we ordered but i have to take off one star because the service was a little slow overall and they weren’t very busy. Definitely will go back though!

Universal Joint was a nice find after a busy day in Asheville. Eating low carb, low sugar is always a little challenging at many restaurants, but here we were able to get a burger and some naked wings - so that was nice. Everything was good. The server was very energetic and a comedian; and I'll take that over a server with no personality any day! With so many options in Asheville that I want to try, I'm not sure when I'll make it back here - but I'm glad we experienced it on this trip.

The U-Fries are amazing here! I am picky about my fries and these really hit the spot. The tots are pretty crisp, which my husband loved, I didn’t like just how crisp they were. Our waitress was super nice and checked on us often. The patio is dog friendly too which was great!

Our Burgers were great and our Server—Wes was top notch! The avocado appetizer was a little odd-probably wouldn’t get it again. But the burgers were to DIE FOR. I got the mushroom & Swiss burger and my husband got the California Bison Burger. We ran across this place when the place we were looking for was closed for refurb! We will be back! Thanks y’all!

First time I've actually eaten here and will be back, absolutely have to come back; they have a burger called, "The Steinbeck"! Are you kidding? Pimento Cheese, pickled jalapenos and topped with the candy of meat, Peppered Bacon! Excellent Burger! Add a side of fries a pint of Highland IPA, and a pint Boojum Brown! Excellent Lunch!

We ate here tonight while camping in Asheville so we had the kids and dog in tow. Universal Joint was pleasing for everyone! I dog got to join us on the patio and the waitress provided the kids with sidewalk chalk! The burgers were "the best we've ever had" according to my kids and my husband loved his bison burger. 5 stars from this family! Only negative was we had to pay $10 to park across the street.

Great food and incredible wait staff. Had our dog with us, so we sat on patio. Waiter brought our dog "Ronin" water after he brought us our drinks. Few minutes later a different person brought him a dog bone. High recommend.

Found this place on Google maps and let me tell you, it is worth the wait. Order anytbing off the menu, you can't go wrong. I would highly recommend the universal tatter tots because they are phenomenal. We devoured them within a few minutes! The bison burger was really good too, the buns were warm and soft to the touch you leave an imprint soon as you touch them. Heavenly mouth watering food that hits the spot. They are open late too and dine in is welcome. Super friendly staff too!

Really great place. Food is good and reasonably priced. Great place to go if you have a dog with you as there is lots of patio space. It is on a pretty major road which is noisy, but to be expected in the city.
We parked at the bank nearby which had insane parking rates. ($12 minimum). Would suggest looking for somewhere else to park if you can find one.

I read a review that said, "Best Burger Ever." So I tried the Bacon Cheeseburger with Tater Tots. I don't know if it was the best ever, but it was really delicious. Three slices of crispy thick slice bacon atop a generous beef pattie with cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato and onion. Cooked perfect. The others in my party got Chicken Phillies and Sweet Potato tots. Loved the ambience, service was good and friendly. I would eat here again.

Unexpected stop at Asheville for our group but loved this place. Service was on point and staff was friendly and quick to bring out the food. The egg rolls, nachos and avocado tacos was awesome! They also had a great location where you can sit under the beautiful trees outdoors & enjoy a great variety of local beers.

Good burgers, good beer, easy walk from my son's home in West Asheville. I had the Firecracker and my wife had the Steinbeck. Both were quite tasty. However, my wife was VERY disappointed that they did not have the Blackened Shrimp Tacos that she had at the Greenville UJ. That is what we had walked there for.

Never again.. I'm an Asheville local and ate here for the first time after years of seeing it popping every other night. With that said, I'm not too sure why people come here; it must be regulars who frequent and get so drunk they can't taste the food. No I'm serious. The patrons were overboard drunk and literally screaming at the top of their lungs and smoking in the open patio to the inside!!! Service was terrible. Im currently waiting for my bill after being finished for 15 minutes. I havent been checked on nor gotten a refill. No tip and no way I'm coming back. But I didnt get mad. Asheville has way better and way cheaper places to go!

BURGER BURGER. May tag Blue Cheese burger was outstanding. Purfect MR which I don't find often. Loaded with melty crumbled Blue and crisp bacon. Tots were excellent. Crisp and lava hot. Served by Lacey and she was extremely knowledgeable and made great suggestions for us as first timers. Cheesy bacon fries app was great as well. Will be on my best burger list for Ashvegas from now on.

What happened to the bartender?. Ive been coming here for years. Foods always good, and you could always count on a great attentive bartender... not sure his name, but unfortunately he's no longer there. <br/><br/>They apparently didnt have a deep bench to choose for a replacement. The bearded dude is obviously over his head. Doesn't even get the basics... such a bummer.

A local favorite. After having lived in Asheville for 5 years now, and seen many restaurants come and go - The UJ is STILL a weekly lunch spot for myself and my crew. Great atmoshere, witty and charming waitstaff, and the best burgers on the west side... <br/><br/>The decor is very "retro-hip" - allowing the building to still take ownership of it's history while being cozy enough for a local hangout. We often bring a 2 year old, who is always welcomed. In the summer, the dogs hanging with owners on the patio, the kids playing with chalk on the sidewalk, the ability to people watch on Haywood- and the entire feeling of the UJ really comes to life...

Slow, food/chef issues. The server was nice but we were always waiting on her. She offered to us the daily special- breakfast style added to any burger. (This place you pick your protein, then set/style of toppings). My husband ordered a chicken burger and asked for it breakfast style. He was immediately told "no he's not going to do that". WHAT. Hi. What. What kind of cook turns down money and customer requests? Seems like a socially conscious place but no one in my party would go back.

Inconvenient parking but worth it!. The parking is on the street and almost deterred us from choosing to go to Universal Joint. We parked near the West Village Market. Good news is parking is free. Universal Joint is a renovated former gas station and garage, hence the name, Universal Joint. There is plentiful, pleasant outdoor seating in the patio area. It was raining so we opted to eat inside near the bar looking out the two former garage doors. The inside decor is distressed brick on the walls along with other old looking signs. The light fixtures over the bar were interesting, too. We selected the pimento cheese and hummus appetizer based on another reviewers comments. We were not disappointed! It was fresh and delicious and we would order it again. The plate had a scoop each of pimento cheese and hummus. There was chopped red onion, chunks of ripe, red tomatoes, slices of crunchy cucumber and little pieces of toast. My husband had an Angus burger with bleu cheese and fries. He said the hamburger was so juicy, it almost went up his nose. He said the hamburger was really delicious. I opted for the spinach salad with goat cheese, candied pecans, chopped red onion, grape tomatoes and cucumbers. Instead of dressing I asked for lemon wedges and olive oil and they were happy to oblige. Our appetizer was served quickly but our drinks never came. I went up to the bar where our waitress was helping other guests. You could tell she honestly forgot. She said my coffee and husbands beer were on her and they were not on our bill as promised. Our main meals were served timely after we had devoured the Pimento and Hummus plate. We would definitely go back.

Spending the week in Asheville and looked online as where to go for a burger and found Universal Joint listed so thought we would try it. Oh my goodness let me tell you that it was the best burger either of us have had in years.I can't even begin to explain how mouth watering and juicy, tastefully it was.The atmosphere and staff were great as well. We will definitely be returning when we come back to town.

Decided to try the "UJ" for burgers with my son and got the namesake burger, a beer and egg roll app. The egg roll filling was weird like some kind of chicken salad though didn't taste bad... The burger was run of the mill except it was so damn salty my mouth was puckered for an hour later. At least the beer was very good with many other good beers to choose from. And that's because this joint, apparently, is really just a bar with some burger flair. Impersonal waitstaff included.

Bloody Mary Purse. New Years Day 2013. Food at UJ is average but an hour wait at our favorite restaurant in West Asheville we decided to just grab a burger.<br/>Service was slow as usual, but that we can handle. But when the waitress spilled an entire bloody mary on my Dooney and Burke and then brought me a cup of soda water to clean it up I was furious. After telling her this would not do the job she walked away, brought our food 20 minutes later and said the soda was working just fine. as I kept trying to blot my completely ruined fabric purse. We could not even eat our food. No manager ever came by but the server brought our check and informed us the owner had comped our bloody mary! You have got to be kidding UJ. We will never spend another dime on your bar food.

Good burgers. This was a good choice for burgers, but the service was slow. Definitely an eclectic atmosphere that can cater to anyone's needs which is great, and would definitely go back but do carryout instead of dine in.

And the winner is.... We recently went on a quest for Asheville's best burger and this is the best place by far hands down. We tried the others from a local readers poll in the same week and 5 guys was next best and the top rated place was just downright awful and expensive.<br/><br/>Universal Joint is in our opinion the best burger we have had in Asheville and has Laplace among the best in the state.

One of my favorites!. UJ is still one of my favorite spots to go grab a beer and a snack and meet up with friends. Universal Fries/Tots are the best! Cheddar, bacon, spring onions the most delicious house made ranch EVER and jalepenos sprinkled on the fried potato of your choice?! I'm down. They have a great selection of beers and they don't mind if you hang out on the patio for hours with your dog. It's a great neighborhood hangout.

Above-average burgers, waitstaff needs happy pills. Tonight we tried the burgers at Universal Joint, in what used to be a Pure station at the corner of Haywood Road and Sand Hill Road in West Asheville.<br/><br/>The burgers were pretty good, among the better efforts I've had in Asheville. My wife had the Steinbeck burger, with pimento cheese, bacon and jalapenos, with okay fries ($9). I had a nicely charbroiled 8 oz. Angus beef with American cheese on an egg bun, which was mistakenly served with tater tots rather than the fries I ordered ($8). <br/><br/>However, UT was just a little scruffier than I expected -- maybe due for an upgrade and refurb --with quite a few flies flitting around the outside patio dining area. The waitstaff (most young women with tattoos) came across as unhappy to be working on a Saturday night ... or perhaps bored West Asheville nonchalance is the affect they were attempting.<br/><br/>With two draft microbeers, tax and tip, the meal for two came to a little over $30. Fair price.<br/><br/>I'd probably go back for the cheeseburger, hoping that the manager spiffs up a little, and the waitstaff takes some happy pills.

Pretty good. Excellent burgers, fries, and AMAZING tots. Ordered a side of coleslaw and they gave me a bowl with dry cabbage and cilantro, so that was weird. Okay service. Nice outdoor patio. Horrible parking situation.

A Smoove Ride. We actually dropped by here twice on the same day. Early on for some cocktails while we waited for our friend to get off work and then later that evening after Bele Chere. The drink special was a Muddled Raspberry, Sweet Tea Vodka concoction that went down very nicely on this hot afternoon. The bartender was OK, not very engaging even though there wasnt much going on. I suppose I was a bit spoiled by all the friendly, warm people we had been introduced to throughout the day. Anyhow, as I said; our clan met up here later that evening and the place was packed. By some minor miracle our pal Wizard found us a table out on the patio; I guess he's good that way. So once we took a load off we were quickly found by our server who wrangled us up some drinks in no time. No doubt we needed grubbings too and I recalled something about Fried Chicken Tacos from my earlier visit. I looked no further, but the rest of our lot was picking apart the menu. Which was good for me because I got to try a whole slew of stuff. The spicy eggrolls were definitely the highlight for me, though by the time the Universal Fries came around I was too stuffed to try them. Their Gyro was also pretty solid. Overall I was impressed. Late nite bar food rarely tastes this good. I could see this being a go-to spot for us once we make the move.<br/>Grade: B (I was told the service generally sucks here, but it seemed fine to me)

This place has THE BEST veggie burger I've ever had! (And I've had tons of veggie burgers.) Theirs is made of tofu, raw veggies, and whole grains, and it's topped with a Greek yogurt sauce. AMAZING! They also have tater tots and home made ranch. My husband and I really enjoyed this place.

Love it!. Wow! We've dined here a number of times and the taste, and level of freshness is just great and that is without factoring the price, can you say affordable? Haven't had a meal I'd complain about. Just today I tried their U Joint Burger---AMAZING! <br/><br/>The staff is nonchalant, but you get your food and drinks in a matter of fact way, without them overly fussing over you. <br/><br/>-Love da' food

Good Food, None of it Local. Pros: the space is really nice (the outdoor patio is great), and the food has been consistently good. It's your fairly typical bar food, burgers, sandwiches, salads. I recommend the smoked wings - they've had them on special before, they're not on the regular menu, but they are awesome. Good selection of beer, that includes many local options and rotates frequently. <br/><br/>Cons: the beer is more expensive here than just about any other restaurant on haywood road (minimum $4, most of them are $4.50). When I asked a server where they sourced their meat/food from, I learned that 1) they had no idea and 2) (almost) nothing is local. Despite tons of local farms to buy their food from, their burgers are sourced from Florida (= frozen and shipped) and they still charge as much as other places with locally bought food. <br/><br/>Hopefully this will change in the future!

Universal Joint. My best friend lives near Universal, and we love going here for lunch. They have good Greek food. I have tried there Gyro's multiple times, because I keep on wanting more! Great outdoor seating. It takes a while to get your food when they are busy, and the service isn't very good. Overall though, I would try.

Nice place, weird layout. Is it just me or does this place have a weird layout.. The drinks were the normal stuff, nothing to get excited about. The food was ok, the service was quite nice but they are gonna have a hard time competing with all the little bars that have opened up in westville. I felt pretty ambivalent about being there, there was nothing really to the place.

Ever crave a burger? Chances are the answer is yes and while millions often go through the drive-thru of chain after chain of questionable mystery meat sandwiches, we had another idea. So many choices (of non-chain, independent restaurants) that we needed a little help to narrow down the search for us. With so a quick look on Urbanspoon for burger joints in Asheville and we found what we needed. The number one choice was in Hendersonville and we were starving so number two it was - Universal Joint! Lucky for us that at 7pm on a Friday night, UJ was having a busy but not completely packed evening. We parked in the bank parking lot across the street and walked in the first door we saw which was on the side. There were a couple open tables but because they are so close together we decided to sit at the bar. It wasn't until later that we noticed what appeared to be a host stand preceding the out door seating in front of the restaurant.
