Great food and service! Everything is always very fresh and the dishes are well thought out. Having grown up in the Sonoran Desert, it's quite a treat for me to experience the flavors of home in downtown Asheville. Friendly and professional staff and a great room!

Score! Relaxed atmosphere while enjoying what translated is “a Mexican kitchen”. Shiny delightful tin ceiling, friendly staff, food that tantalizes the tastebuds. The kitchen has a pleasant hum while it’s staff whips up homemade tacos, chips (in my case) with an amazing guacamole. I chose a fish (lightly corn breaded cod) taco with the 2nd, fried avocado taco and a side of beans & rice (something I liked better than any other Mexican restaurant has ever served). Asheville can boast many unique restaurants, this one will see me here more than the others. I can’t wait for more!

As someone who's loved Mexican food for my entire life. I've never quite seen it prepared this way and I'll never be able to have it any other way but the Sonora way from now on! Stop by the bar too! ;)

No other taco could compare in the downtown area. The absolute best and foremost authority versed in the arts of the taco. Gnargnar!

A sense of community is evident as soon as you walk through the door. Nearly fifty incredible tequilas available, & as many menu options! From the silvery-reflective ceiling inviting you to lose yourself in a dozen-or-so margarita/cocktail options, to the wine & beer options, you’ll be hard-pressed to choose a favourite aspect of Sonora Cocina. Rustic wood floors, bright pictures & accent walls, & an open-style seating area marry contemporary ambience with upscale-causal Mexican dining. A massive plus for me were the gender-neutral washrooms. They are also wheelchair accessible. If you want a genuine interaction with owners & staff, look no further than this instant downtown classic. (Pssst! All margs contain 2 oz of tequila!) Oh, & did I mention that the food is OUT OF THIS WORLD?! UPDATE: this evening we dined again, & had Cheyenne as our server, & enjoyed the fantastic service & delicious food. We also tried a tequila flight (they have tons of options!), & several margaritas (see photos).

Was 100% awesome, until the manager said that they had jalapeños but they wouldn't grill (1) one for me. Other than that little deal, it was great good.! JUST AN FYI, IF YOU HAVE THE MEANS TO PLEASE A CUSTOMER, MAYBE CONSIDER DOING SO. 😉

Came Saturday for an early dinner. Pork belly and shrimp tacos were good as were the tostados. Chips and salsa were really solid. Great service. Would go back and recommend it for anyone looking for a Mexican spot in the area

Arrived around 6:30 on a Friday and it wasn’t too busy! Business picked up shortly after we ordered. Our server was great and attentive. The margaritas were tasty and the chips and salsa were great too! We loved the mango habanero salsa the most. They had a few vegetarian options. We ordered the fried avocado tacos and the shrimp tacos, both of which were stuffed to the brim and super delicious. This place does not skimp on filling!! Our friend ordered the tostadas which also looked great. Nice little spot to enjoy Mexican fare.

Food here was amazing! Everything was super fresh and flavorful. I cannot speak highly enough of my steak burrito, super flavorful and the steak was very tender! Would highly recommend this place if you are in Asheville and looking for delicious Mexican food and refreshing margaritas. Don’t forget to order the chips and queso, it is so good! Great service as well!

Highly recommend! We sat at the bar during busy dinner hours and Shelby was a super efficient and friendly bar tender. No long wait times and the staff worked together like a well oiled machine. The food was great! The chips and queso were the best I've ever had. The margaritas were delicious and I loved my fish tacos with calabacitas. Everything was fresh and made with obviously high quality ingredients. All around great experience! Great location in downtown. Looking forward to my next visit.

I truly love this place! Not only are the portions fair, they’re also interesting and SO TASTY. My husband and I have been coming here since 2019 and it is our absolute favorite Mexican place in Asheville. It’s casual but by no means cheap in quality. The service is friendly and the staff is always so accommodating and helpful in making food recommendations. Pictured: This past time we had La Primavera (pink one in photo) and La Flaca with chili salt to start, both were smooth sipping and properly boozed. Great balance of flavors. As an app we got the nachos (homemade chips!) and the plate brought 4 incredible salsas, all flavorful. For dinner we had the Specialty tacos: I got the beef and avocado with a side of rice and beans, my husband got the steak and the fish with a side of calabacitas. We finished the night off with another cocktail each and were merrily on our way! This is just a snippet of their menu but suffice it to say: they are FABULOUS. Choose any item from Sonora’s food selection and you’ll be satisfied. The staff is so friendly, and in a pinch I’ve also seen them accommodate larger groups without too much trouble which goes to show how helpful and wonderful they are. Definitely stop by here!

I was actually surprised 😮. First of all I got concerned when i noticed there was no Mexicans on the kitchen or any place in the restaurant but then the food was better than expected, I'm not sure I will consider it as authentic but as a Mexican I can tell you was a really good experience the flavors were so good and I liked this tex mex mix better than any other I had tried in the US before. The place was really nice as well.

My wife and I came were in Asheville from out of town and decided to try this place out due to the good reviews. We were not disappointed. We sat at the bar and had a really cool bartender who was very friendly and could make a great margarita. The food was amazing as well. We got the salsa and chips for our starter and the chips came out with 4 different salsas and all of them were delicious. I got the specialty tacos and my wife got 2 chicken tacos and they definitely did not disappoint. If I lived in Asheville I would be a regular here for sure.

Perfect place to eat after a long day of hiking and exploring. I loved the potato and avocado tacos! One thing that really disappointed us was the quality of the $13 Palomas--they were basically shots of strong tequila with a splash of grapefruit concentrate. Ultimately, the food was incredible--but the cocktails weren't worth the money.

Best chips and margaritas! A totally enjoyable experience. It was amazing to see the teamwork with such a small staff pumping it all out. Food was amazing. Barbacoa tacos were my fav. We sat at the bar and the service was spot on. Get the elote you wont be disappointed. Empanadas were stupid good. Can’t wait to come back. First time but definitely not my last.

Blown away by food, drinks and service. We sat at the bar so the vibe was great but I could see how sitting at a table might feel more “sterile” or distant. Overall will be back though. Wish they offered a brunch!!

Awesome food. Not your Americanized Mexican. The tamale was the best I ever tasted in a restaurant and like homemade. Margaritas freshly squeezed, beef enchiladas tasted great. The Elote I have never had but also great. Did not like the beans at all, but everything else was the best I ever had . Also good service and friendly management

Great addition to downtown Asheville. Cool Space. Super friendly service. We had kids that were picky eaters and they accommodated them with exactly what they wanted. The food was so good. Everyone was raving. I'm definitely going back. I like that the menu isn't overwhelming with too many options. Margarita had fresh squeezed lime in it and was high quality. Go check them out for sure! They will be a really popular one soon I'm sure.

I visited this restaurant for the first time today. The food is amazing! Very fresh and flavorful (I ordered queso sonora & a chicken quesadilla). I did feel that service could have been better, there were a few empty tables when I sat down and it took a while before someone asked for my order or wiped my table off. However, staff were overall courteous and I would definitely return. I am hopeful that a location will open in Charlotte in the near future!

We really enjoyed our experience here! The food was wonderful, the drinks were amazing and the service was great! Highly recommended! *Side note: On our drive home from Asheville, my wife asked me what I enjoyed most while visiting there and my response was “Sonora’s!” Thank you for the wonderful dining experience!
