Review Joss Cafe & Sushi Bar - Annapolis

Dana Jean
Mouthwatering! The Chilean bass miso was sooooo good!!! The fried tofu too. Our server was so wonderful! She offered opinions and recommendations and she was spot on with everything she recommended.

Great drinks! Vegetarian creamy broth for Ramen was incredible! Great sushi worth the wait.

Considering that I have been coming here my entire life, it only seems fitting that I finally leave a review. No seriously, my parents brought me here when I was a baby all the time and there was a polaroid of me in my basket on the wall. Joss is easily the best sushi that I have ever had in my life. My parents travel for a living (both work for Delta) where they have been all over the world (including Japan/Hawaii) and say this is the best sushi they’ve ever. The fish is SO fresh. It’s melt in your mouth delicious. This place is a staple of Annapolis and whenever I come home I have to get it. Love you guys

Loved this lil gem! Ask for ‘pink lady’ it was soooo delicious. Bursting with flavors that’s the one with the salmon on top I believe.

Have been several times and the food has always been good. It's not great and changing but it is good. A nice view or a quiet table are available. It seems they may have larger private rooms also. Staff has always been great.

No bartender working on a Saturday afternoon. Avocados were starting to turn dark brown. Waitress was sweet and the restaurant was very clean. But the sushi was average. I would still recommend

We love Joss its our favorite local sushi spot. Always fresh, always a great crowd and they have the best beef teriyaki and I do not care for red meat but I cant help it when I visit. Oy!

Food was fantastic. Service was embarrassingly bad. I was a routine customer several years ago, and thought the world of the place previously. Visited Annapolis and came back to a place I remembered. I found myself unamused by the wait staff's terrible performance, negative attitude, unfriendly and uninviting to return again. The food when finally served was delicious, and I can't help but feel sorry for the cook staff who try so hard but are completely let down by the wait staff. I hope they figure themselves out in the future, but I don't plan on returning anytime soon.

The Staff and Management always takes care of me when I bring guests to eat. They treat us like VIPs Even though they’re was a wait, we were seated almost immediately. Our waitress Calli, I think her name was was fabulous. We ordered from the kitchen n sushi menu and our food came up quickly and was the proper temperature and delicious. Never hesitate to go to Joss Cafe. Best of the Best in Annapolis!!!*****

I LOVE Joss. I'be been going to Joss for sushi for 20 years and have rarely been disappointed. Their sushi is always tasty and fresh, and the sushi chefs and wait staff lovely. My only request would be that they provide gluten free soy sauce!
Erik Briggs
Great food, great service, great price and great sake! Highly recommend getting the futumake roll.

We have been going to Joss forever.if possible it was even better. The sashimi was massive. Toro, Otoro and super Otoro. Was unbelievable, melt in your mouth. One of the best meals ever.

Joss is the BEST sushi restaurant in the state of Maryland. My wife and I have been going there weekly for the past few years. The sushi is fresh and the menu is big. While we have our favorite rolls, there are always new specials we try that are phenomenal. The management and staff are friendly and attentive. Simply a great sushi experience each and every single time we come!

Always enjoy eating at the bar. The interaction with the Sushi Chef is always great. We end up trying many things by sitting there that we might not have ordered off the menu. If you like dark beer try the Shapiro Black. Like a dark German.

Great service, great sushi! Not to be missed! Sitting at the sushi bar was the best. Definitely the best sushi in Annapolis. Don't miss it!

I LOVE joss! I've been going here for years! Always such great sushi! I got super excited when I went on Saturday and they had added a bunch of new rolls on the menu! This will always be my goto place for the best sushi! Staff is super welcoming and friendly! SOO GOOD!

Last night me and my wife had a dinner, I ordered tempura seafood and my wife order tonkatsu, if you go there don't you ever order those food because they are tasteless, if you eat them taste like drinking a water, the service is fine. They need improvement.
Annette Barnhart Quiles

I tend only to eat sushi at the bar but I love this place.

Awesome food and great atmosphere! Glad my sister took me during my stay here. :)

One of my favorite sushi places any where. I was very excited to see the renovation, looks great. However, now with all the extra room, there's really no excuse not to have high chairs. (Unless they are trying to discourage parents with kids, which would be lousy.) Food was excellent as usual, hoping the expansion does not affect the quality and effort of the staff.

Food is always good. Service is good too. Friendly atmosphere.

This is mine & my fiance's special place. It was where we went on our 1st date, my 30th birthday, and where he took me for lunch the day he proposed. Their sushi is top-notch, the atmosphere is quaint, and the plum wine is delicious!

The sushi was wonderful. Some issues though. The waiter did not add the gratuity to the check then confronted some of us about not leaving a tip. He smelled of alcohol. I wanted my sushi on a boat and he said they could do that. When the sushi came out it was not on the boat. AND I left my b'day card at the restaurant and ended up going back not 5 minutes after we left. The waiter opened my cards and took the gift cards out. Removed the gift card from the package and then when confronted about it lied about what happened. The waiter was an ass. When I spoke to the manager about this I felt he did not care and treated me as though I was not worth his time I will be hard pressed to want to go back to Joss sushi bar any time soon.

My husband and I have been going to Joss for sushi for years! It's been a fun date night location for good sushi. We decided to go out with family including our 7 month old daughter tonight and found out they do not have high chairs. This was incredibly disappointing and caused us to have to go to another sushi place down the street. When we approached the young wait staff and hostess about it they were very flippant with their response and certainly did not seem to care. It would seem like a simple thing to have to accommodate customers.

One of our favorites in Annapolis! Wife loves it as well...
Heather D'Antonio Edwards
Not as amazing as it used to be. Quality of food went down since renovation. They have some sassy servers there now too. Very unpleasant.
Jessica Steinberg
Yum!!! They have the freshest sashimi I've ever had. The Escolar is really popular, and you'll never run out of new things to try.
James Kersey
Excellent food and service! Highly recommended! Will definitely be back!
Zuzelle Gómez Hartman
This is where our family goes to celebrate new years. Super YUMMY food! We love you Joss!
Maria Alevrofas
I love it!!! The Best in Annapolis, hands down!!!!

The fish selection is great, the service is friendly and the prices are fair. The non-sushi offerings are also very good, and plentiful. My personal favorite sushi place in Annapolis.
Used to love the old quaint reataurant. Now they have a larger more space to dine. Servers are quick and nice and very knowledgeable on the menu. Sushi has gone down in my opinion but still good. Amazingly though i definitely love the espresso float that they have. Its worth coming back to.
Dustin
Staff was friendly and service was quick.

The lunch Sushi Combo special was a nice variety and good value at $10.

I die for the dynamite and Main Street rolls!

Great quaint sushi place. Visiting DC for my birthday, my best friend knew i liked sushi and heard wonderful stories about this place and drove me all the way out to annapolis to grab dinner. we were seated promptly, and had drinks in no time. my sapporo was perfect temp. the seating was a tad cramped, but it is a small place, and it did add a little extra volume to the whole room as a result. was a little more difficult at times, but you could still have a conversation. the sushi menu was very diverse and my sashimi came very well prepared and the rolls tasty, but a tad bland looking (if you care about the art side of sushi). prly in my top 10 in sushi places ever which is saying something, but prly between 6-10... id go again!
Sid
Recent expansion is an awesome addition. Service and food are still unsurpassed.

JOSS HATES KIDS. i had heard good things about joss and was anxious to try it. i went mid afternoon on a saturday with my husband, my parents and my two year old daughter.

Since they werent busy, there were empty tables outside and in the main room where you entered. But we werent seated there. As if we had the plague, we were promptly and rudely informed that they did not have high chairs or booster seats and they immediately escorted us to the LAST table in EMPTY BACK room right next to the bathroom and a waiter's station.

It was so clear that they hate kids, didnt care whether we had a bad experience or if they kept our business. i said why dont you just seat us IN the bathroom? i also said that i refused to be treated this way and that we were leaving. They didnt apologize or seem to care. And believe me it was clear that we were insulted. I WILL TELL EVERYONE I KNOW NOT TO GO THERE. And p.s. my daughter is very well behaved and was quietly sitting in her stroller not bothering anyone.

Pretty good. IF you go to Joss you must try the grilled squid it is the best. It is a very different dish, something you would not think you order but you will not regret it I promise, it makes a great appitizer to share before you get your sushi!

Go for the food, you'll end up coming back. Joss is a one-of-a-kind place. I've eaten there probably 5 times in the past year and the food was always excellent. Their sushi is what people go there for, but I've also had a few more "Americanized" dishes, such as the Chesapeake Chicken, and never was disappointed.

The restaurant itself is a bit cramped, but not terrible. The ambience (especially during the day) isn't spectacular. At night, though, it's very romantic. That said, Joss is a one-of-a-kind place where you pay for your food, not the ambience.

It was a great experience, lil small but overall quality was magnificent!!

The best sushiplace ever... although its a little small
Trey
Best sushi in the world! My wife and I drive 6 hours from NC to eat at Joss.

Pretty good sushi, but the beef tetayki is what I really go there for.

Welcome to sushi Annapolis style. As you walk in the door you'll be greeted by pictures of Harrison Ford and Pat Sajak. Both of these celebs have enjoyed what Joss has to offer. As you walk in you will be greeted by the staff with a loud hello in Japanese. Make you way over to the ramp as you will have to wait for a table. Joss does not take reservations, so plan on waiting for a table during the dinner rush. When you are seated order a Kirin or Sapporo and have a look at the menu. Sushi at Joss is not as eclectic as Morimoto or Nobu, but it is pretty tasty. Start with an order of spring rolls and crunchy ebi. The fried shrimp are paired with a spicy salad and sauce which is delicious. For dinner try the different rolls such as spicy scallop or the main street. Joss is a great little place to grab a bite so check it put next time your in Crabtown.

Dreadful Service, Mediocre Sushi. I grew up around here and have been to Joss' many times and have had sushi many places around the world. The food has always been decent but I've never had anything great there. I find it hilarious when the only 3 sushi places that exist in Annapolis always get top honors (we have no other choices!)

The last time I went was at lunch. They wouldn't serve a man a cup of coffee at 2pm when they closed for lunch at 2:30pm. That seemed extremely rude considering 1) it was just a cup of coffee and 2)the 2 diners at that table had a ton of sushi and drinks. The ensuing argument between the diners and management upset the whole dining room.

In my opinion this place has become way too comfortable being the top dog in town. Another even halfway decent new sushi joint could blow them out of the water. Hopefully that will happen so we can finally get some decent sushi in this town.

Good stuff. Joss isn't the best sushi place ever, but it gets the job done well...I mean come on, it's in downtown Annapolis-what more can you expect from a sushi café..?
Adishong
Best sushi! I like the atmospher, it has a lot of character.
TGK
Food & service are excellent. Atmosphere...not so much. It's loud and way too many people moving around, it takes away from the Asian dining experience. The food and service make it worth the visit!

Best Sushi In Town. Obviously, there are several choices for sushi in town but Joss Cafe continues to please. From the friendly and accomodating staff to the unique sushi selections, this is a must when in town
Enjoy
Jennifer
Consistently fabulous. Why does the sushi at Joss taste better than anywhere else? I have no idea, but it is always excellent. The ambiance is so-so, and waiting on the ramp to be seated is a necessary evil, but once seated, I have never been disappointed.

I was in Annapolis meeting a friend for dinner and since it was a little on the later side, we were in the mood for something a little light. I suggested sushi and my friend was responsible for picking the place. My friend knows about my slight Food Network obsession and took me to Joss Sushi . Joss was featured on The Best Thing I Ever Ate for their fried shrimp heads. I personally don’t eat shrimp so I didn’t try this, but it was still cool to go to a restaurant recommended by a professional chef. Joss Sushi My friend decided to start with the Seaweed Salad. It was incredibly light and fresh and a great way to start the meal. Seaweed Salad I decided to begin with a Miso Soup, even though the days are finally getting warmer, at Japanese restaurants miso soup is one of my favorite things. The miso soup at Joss was very good, not too salty like it can be some places. Miso Soup My friend and I decided to split three rolls of sushi between the two of us. We ordered a Spicy Tuna Roll with Avocado, a Spicy Salmon Roll with Avocado, and a Crunchy Scallop Roll. The fish was incredibly fresh, which is possibly the most important thing when ordering sushi. I loved the spicy tuna and the spicy salmon, unfortunately my friend did not because they were too spicy for her. She really enjoyed her scallop roll though which included deep fried scallops which she said were cooked perfectly. Assorted Sushi If you’re looking for excellent, fresh sushi in Annapolis , look no further than Joss Sushi . I’m sure you won’t be disappointed!

At Joss Sushi, the maguro poke is a colorful appetizer of tuna and white yam, folded in a creamy, spicy mixture of soy sauce, sesame oil, Japanese pepper, scallions and pine nuts. If you love sashimi, don’t miss the big and brawny, big and meaty red drum or kingfish reminiscent of its creamy yellowtail cousin.
