Incredible Value - Enjoyable Experience
Amsterdam Muni is an excellent and challenging extremely well laid out golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. in the 1930's that is a par 71 6,309 yard layout from the Mens' White Tees. I have played the course 4 times in the last month with friends and as part of a mid-season golf outing from my league.
The course is a surprisingly great value, a hidden gem, in very good condition, with a bargain $28 greens fee for 18 holes with a ride on golf cart. In my experience playing the course, I found the facility to be an extremely well run, friendly, helpful, kind and courteous place to play with staff involved that go out of their way to make sure you have an excellent experience. The entire attitude is a result of the leadership and friendly tone that begins with the current pro, Chris Hrycenko, who is a young guy with Amsterdam roots that truly reflect his pride and commitment to both the course and his hometown. I play a fair amount of golf at many courses in the Capital Region and his kindness and concern and commitment to customer service stands out as exceptional.
You will really enjoy the 3rd, 4th, 7th, 8th, 12th, 14th, 15th and 18th holes. There is enough elevation change on this course to keep the most talented golfers among us entertained and, as such, I do not recommend walking the course as riding is clearly the best way to go. You will also enjoy the widely varied par 3 holes that involved a mixture of length, elevation change, and difficult rolling undulating greens. My less than stellar putting kept me from scoring far better on this layout.
After golf the restaurant/bar/clubhouse features a great covered veranda and patio you will want to enjoy a breakfast, lunch or dinner on. There too the food and beverages were great, offered at bargain prices, with a barmaid and wait staff that were prompt, courteous, kind, and well-skilled in making the "social" side of your golfing experience a success.
Like I said, I been here 4 times in the last month and the course is consistently challenging, well managed and played by friendly caring people who are proud of this wonderful asset of the City of Amsterdam. The times I was there felt like this place was under-played and almost had the feeling that I was at a country club due to the lightness of play and lack of any delays, .this well kept secret would be a plus for the golfer, not so much so for the course or the City budget that funds it. My roundtrip to play this course is about 1 hour, 30 minutes each way, mostly on the Interstate, that said, the drive is well worth it. I would strongly encourage anyone who has not played this course before or not played it recently to return and give it a try; simply said, a great layout and nice facilities run by friendly people who care about their course and their City, and to that end, at it's current pricing levels perhaps the best golfing bargain within a 90 minute radius around the Capital District Region of NYS. How do you beat that? YOU CAN'T!!
The other thing I would mention is the locals playing here pretty much all seem to be the kind of people who look you in the eyes and respond in a friendly manner whenever paths cross or you say hello. Well done to all involved, here's hoping my regular circle of golfing buddies want to return to play here often, even with the 30 minute or so commute we all have from various locations in the Capital District.
If you are visiting the area to go to Saratoga or the Sacandaga Reservoir give this place a try if you want a solid golf course without the overpriced greens fees and long waiting tee times that go along with summer season at or near our recreational lakes and the Saratoga Flat Track.
To Mayor Villa, Golf Pro Chris Hrycenko, and everyone else involved with the Amsterdam Municipal Golf Course, bravo, job extremely well done, and thank you all for a great golfing experience!
